I just finished reading this anthology and had this really cool chapter of the doctors trying new types of rocket punch.

It would ve later used in SMZ but we could say it was first done here.

So what are you consuming on this trilogy?

I could only find the anthology in Italian, your mention reminds me of how the ridiculous Daisharin Rocket Punch comes up now and then, and iirc was Z's strongest attack in one of the SRWs. Absolutely ridiculous, but charming nonetheless. I'm just waiting for anon's translation of Ota's Great in the meantime.

Mazinger Zero was created by Dr. Blade, he alongside Juuzo created Zero and Z to rake over the world but Juuzo gave up on this idea.

This manga came out in 1997, before Shin Mazinger Zero, that features Mazinger ZERO

Which is funny because in the Shin Getter robo OVA prequel written by Imagawa, there was also a change getter zero that never appeared elsewhere

I was actually disappointed. Due to the Great Mazinger tease in episode 1 I was expecting it to at least get to Great Mazinger's debut, but then when they get back to that episode 1 scene they have Great Mazinger just leaving because its story hasn't started yet even though it makes no sense at all script-wise.

I would still love to see it some day, I got some stuff for it in SRW V but it was also tying into Shin Mazinger Zero and, as much as I love Shin Mazinger Zero, I wanted a proper continuation and conclusion for just Shin Mazinger. X has a more standard entry for Great. Also brings up it being the 2nd arm of Zeus, while V didn't bother connecting them at all, IIRC.

I genuinely don't recall how far I got in X, I don't think it was immensely far. V really focused on the Zero plot from the get-go after teasing you with Tetsuya for 40 years and having him steal Ryoma and the Getter. The Mycenae stage was amazing though, having to beat all of them within 5 turns for that tasty bonus point. Probably the most memorably fun moment in SRW struggling while also refusing to upgrade so as not to make the difficulty trivial.

This would have been very lovely, or have literally any sort of Great Booster at all, instead of making it a reusable generic Great

"By standard entry" I meant that X actually adapts Mazinger Z falling to the Mycenae and Great showing up to save it, rather than V where Great's entire plot was mostly Zero focused aside from Tetsuya's backstory. In X, it's the more standard "secret weapon against the Mycenae", just combined with Shin Mazinger.

What went wrong? I have a feeling that something so revolutionary was achieved that no one could rival it so everything after it slowly went in decline. Today's mecha anime production has better equipment to create sleeker animation (even that is steamrolled with CGI for ''less work more profit''), but even that pales in comparison compared to those anime created closer to the 70s.

It is weird. Everyone expected the mecha in Grendizer U to ve animated like shit, but it was the humans characters that looked stiff as hell, not the mechas that looked pretty great

I bounced off the original Mazinger Z anime years ago, but recently started Shin Mazinger Z’s anime after liking Koji in Super Robot Wars 30 and am enjoying it so far, though it’s a little weird how much they’re stretching out monster of the week stuff to be more like Monster of the Month.
Also, recently got the Grendizer game on sale and am gonna give that a try. Should really try the original shows again, but might just opt for the manga instead. I like MotW stuff (I watch enough Ultraman to prove that) but the animation was real rough.
