They just were disappointed by ZZ sales and wanted to shake things a bit by giving another established mecha director a shot in the same time slot. But at that time there was no Gundam without Tomino, so Dragonar was made instead. People talk like it was a pseudo-remake, but the only similarity is Mayo and Linda relationship being sorta like Char and Sayla. But other than that, it’s a completely different show with just a similar premise.After CCA proved to be successful, they didn’t need another robot show and Bandai just gave up of that time slot and focused on Gundam OVAs. Takara then took over with Samurai Troopers, Jushin Liger and eventually the Brave series.
