Is there any other series that Sunrise tried to replace Gundam

I don’t think they ever meant to replace Gundam. Takayuki Kanda and Tomino style are complete opposite. They just were disappointed by ZZ sales and wanted to shake things a bit by giving another established mecha director a shot in the same time slot. But at that time there was no Gundam without Tomino, so Dragonar was made instead. People talk like it was a pseudo-remake, but the only similarity is Mayo and Linda relationship being sorta like Char and Sayla. But other than that, it’s a completely different show with just a similar premise. After CCA proved to be successful, they didn’t need another robot show and Bandai just gave up of that time slot and focused on Gundam OVAs. Takara then took over with Samurai Troopers, Jushin Liger and eventually the Brave series.

The Giganos empire is exactly the Zeon empire only difference is that the Grand Marshall of Giganos is both, Degwin Zabi, the leader of Zeon who wanted to rule over earth, and also Zeon Zum Deikun, the leader of Zeon who wanted to preserve the earth and build a nation inspace to lead humans to move away from earth.

I'd argue that Dragonar still copied Gundam through D-1 based on the Gundam while D-2 is Dragonar's Guncannon while the Dragoon is Dragonar's GM. Not forget to mention Giganos hurling objects against Earth.

The backbone is the same, but the show is a very different beast. Reading a synopsis would give you the impression of it being very similar, but the execution is so different it doesn’t feel like Gundam at all. I think it’s intentional because Zeta was criticized for being too complicated and ZZ alienated fans of the former and failed to bring a new audience at the same time. Dragonar was a palette cleaning in a way. Also the first not-Tomino show to use that time slot in almost the entire decade. One of the mandates was to avoid concepts and themes only Sci-Fi fans would understand. So it’s a more down-to-Earth approach.

The only series that ever had a chance of supplanting Gundam was Geass, but for whatever reason they left it completely dormant for years and by the time they tried to actually cash in with spinoffs and sequels it was too late and the moment had passed.

Not even close. Takara was way happier with making that Transformers money while Votoms got shuffled off to the OVA market.
