Perfectly understandable.
Even if the Nether itself is in the upper echelons of mobile suit performance, it matters little if the pilot is some ordinary guy having to face off against monsters that beat mobile suits on foot.

I can definitely believe he was hired for his ability to spend eleven months sitting on his ass pretending to be a windmill rather than fighting capability. You need a lot of patience and maybe some flour if anyone comes knocking.

How tf does that even happen in a tournament? Surely if an opponent disappears for hours, the match forfeits to the opponent who is still around?

You have to find another fighter to start the fight. The initial stage was basically a FFA round but with it being 1v1 for actual encounters during the round.
