Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

The unfortunate thing is that after this reprint, people will probably remember for at least a few years that the kit is a piece of gutter trash. Meaning that the next reprint won't be for another 5-ish years, until enough people forget and a new batch of Gunpla builders start building their collections and wondering when they can get a fabled and rare The O.

HG Atlas

I got the Red Gundam yesterday and it's an amazing kit for a HG. Basically HGUC Moon Gundam quality imo, although it doesn't have an inner frame. Wish Bandai still made 1/100s, they could easy scale this thing up and it'd pass for a MG at a glance.

I ran out of steel white just before this kit so I mixed ex white and midnight blue around 30:1. Undercoat was nazca heavy mechanical surfacer. For a few of the larger surfaces I added a small highlight of pure white.

What are anon's thoughts on the MG Crossbone full cloth? Numerous short reviews state it's top heavy. other than that, is it good?

I usually try open my request when I have both the mascot ready and the entries are revealed with voting result being my personal deadline to finish all of the finalized mascot and open the request. I think I ended up finishing the mascot earlier than usual, and ended up opening the request earlier than usual.

I was considering delaying the remaining request slots after seeing your post after realizing that most participant might not be ready to make request yet, but I think I will keep it open, but save the next reminder until the voting result came in for now, assuming that I didn't ended up getting caught a range ban.

The arm is infamous for breaking because people articulate it the wrong way. Look that up and you'll have no other issues.

Got a sword I want my kit to hold, but the hand is too large for the thin hilt. Due to other reasons I can't modify the hand nor the hilt, is there any other way of stopping the weapon from flopping around in the grip?

I have one and I'd say skip it. Get the regular MG Crossbone or preferably the RG. The kit is too flimsy to reliable hold the Full Cloth weapons. You can always tighten the arm joints like I did, but the weapons come in that old style peg system and those are always a pain in the weapon is large enough.

Sorry for shit doodle, but which blade shape do you prefer? Used grey to mark where the edge is.
Trying to work out using SD BB Senshi Exia's GN Swords on a HG without it looking silly. Left is its normal silhouette, right is my idea how to tweak it and make it look more unique. Both look a bit strange, but at some point if I modify it too much it'd be just easier to make a brand new one outta plastic plates instead.

The main thing that helps is being able to get ahold of a bunch of cheap kits solely for the purpose of kitbashing. For instance, I had the HG Wing Zero and HG Destiny sitting in my backlog, but pre-ordered the RG Wing Zero TV once it was announced and managed to snag an RG Destiny on sale. Both of the HG kits were already bought on discount, so it was an easy choice.

Kit bashing/Scratch building is very fun, but it eats up a lot of time. You will need to glue together parts that were never meant to join, and you need to wait for the glue to cure/harden before gluing the next bit.

The base to all was a primer > Mr Color Gloss Black.
The silver I used Mr Color Super Chrome Silver 2 > Mr Hobby, Mr Color Super Clear III UV Cut Gloss.
The "white" was a pre-shading with Mr Color Off White > Mr Crystal Color Moonstone Pearl > Mr Color Lascivus Clear White.
The red was a Tamiya Acrylic Clear red over the silver part.

I lost a piece from the P-Bandai HG GM Sniper. Can I harvest an equivalent piece from one of the other GM Sniper kits or am I SOL?

Painted my first spoons. My local hobby store mislead me into think normal Mr Color was alcohol based acrylics, so I picked up some Aqueous WFM colors to do on an Aerial I have sitting around. Got a Varjello primer and a top coat (which isn't on yet).

For that laser, I did it by gluing some red explosive effect cotton to a clear plastic rod. I spun it as I glued it, and sprayed a bit of orange and red ink over it. Then just super glued it right to the gun

Airbrush primer is a lot cheaper, as is hardware store varnish and primer. I've personally been really impressed with hardware store primers and think they have come a long way in terms of color and finishes.

Yanase is not a strictly gundam guy. To me he always have been a vidya designer. He was Shinkawa's assistant for Metal Gear Solid 4 and MGR, designed mechs for Xenoblade X and AC2. The gold and silver gundam markers are pretty decent for what they are but I just apply them their paint with a brush anyways. I highly suggest you do the same, detail painting is much easier with a brush than a marker of any kind. Markers can look alright for bigger colour correction like a shield surface needing to be a different colour but not for, say, the common task of having to make vernier yellow or etc.

I've had good results mixing their pink/blue prism color with clear colors, but you should test it yourself to see how it works with different colors. I'd probably try mixing it with a tiny bit of clear white if you want it to be a little more desaturated. Clear red if you don't have white but only a VERY tiny amount, like a drop or two. All that said, I think it looks pretty good as is.

Messing around with dspiae chrome marker for the first time, and how am I supposed to protect the shine? Even letting a piece dry for a couple of days just touching it will take the shine off. I tried a gloss topcoat, and again it took the chrome effect off and was just left with gloss silver.

Usually the gundam comes with stickers and people pick up waterslide decals instead. However, some kits come with waterslide decals instead. I think being a gundam base kit it should come with water slides.

Eh, probably not that high. That old GM is somewhere around $10, but it has such dogshit joint range and seams out the asshole (like seriously, these are the types of seam lines you would expect on an NG 1/144 kit from the mid 90's). A properly built GM Revive would have better-designed joints that let you pose your army better, and an actual attempt at hiding seam lines. At most it would cost about $20 apiece, which is more than worth it. Hell, look at the HG Leo, a 2018 grunt MS that you can get for $11 each on a good day.

I bought a set of DSPIAE markers like 2 years ago and I still use them occasionally, they have a soft tip you don't have to press on so they don't glob paint on like gundam markers
I only had 1 of them dry out on me, the silver one, but that's mostly because I left it open a lot while doing details

I built the red version. It's pretty good. Comes with a longer blade for the Composite Shield Booster which is very cool.

Elbow joints are pretty tight though. On my Bandai HG they are a bit flimsy and easy to accidentally disassemble. AK seems to have tried to correct that but now they are really tight. Could be easy to snap if you aren't careful.
