Welcome friends, ITT:
We make and share pony art, with absolutely no pressure to deliver anything that's technically good (besides having ponies in it, which makes it good by default)

Make something, share what you've done, and give feedback and motivation to help us all keep improving and creating!

This thread's focus is art, but beginner or low effort content of any kind is welcome here. If you do want to post about something else like music, gamedev, or crafts, though, just note that you may find better help and feedback posting it in the /create/ thread

Are you an experienced artist? Leave some tips, feedback, guides, or tutorials, they're well appreciated here!

Guides, tutorials and resources! Start here!

I'd recommend studying horse anatomy if you are going to study any irl animals because ponies are literally just chibi-fied horses.

>I'd make the bodies more stretchy, have sweetie belle droop around the arm a bit from both sides and stretch out scoots torso, maybe move them further away from dale so it looks like they ran a fair bit already
Yeah I tried to make Sweetie a bit more droopy, as for Scootaloo I chose the opposite approach, since they're not running away from Dale, but rather backing up towards him, I also made them closer.
>I'd steal some poses from winter wrap up
I rewatched the entire episode, I have no idea what poses you wanted me to steal.

Thanks anon.
As for the fic, I'd recommend it A LOT. I wanted to read 1 or 2 chapters before working on something, I ended up reading the entire 23 chapters currently available in one go. It also made me discover (and watch) KOTH. I know the creator of the fic hangs around /mlp/ sometimes, so if you see this, thanks a lot dude, and keep up the good work.

but you specified they are backing up towards dale so it makes sense looking at the image now, i just thought he fillynapped swettie belle, knowing what is really going on, I don't think it looks that stiff and it will look extra nice when coloured, I'd think of adding more angry ponies around them to make it extra obvious for autists like me kek

Welcome to Pen2Pone, where a written description (the pen) is taken by (You) (the 2) and is crafted into a pone (the pone).
You've got all thread to draw your own take, so don't feel rushed.
Let your imagination gallop free and try to draw what (You) envision. Think outside the box everyone else is in, think outside the box you're in. Or maybe think inside the box you want to be in. You draw the version of the character you see in your head, nothing anyone else posts should tell you your interpretation is bad.
There aren't any real rules other than to have fun and be creative, so lets go!

It is. think of it like forging a sword the closer to the final dimensions your starting material is to the finished sword, the less material and time you waste during the grinding, polishing, and fitting phases. this is a very nutshell version but I think the idea should come across.

I advanced a bit on my fan art of a Pocketful of Sand, I did the line art and coloured Dale and the CMC. I was slow on this because I just failed my driving's license test, and didn't feel like drawing. The next time I post here, it should be the end result, or the near end result.
I'll clean up the lineart a bit tomorrow, and shade (and correct where it's needed) the colouring.
Please if you have colouring and shading tips, please share them, I rarely colour anything I'm kinda bad at this.

I panicked basically.
I live in a city reknown for being full of reckless drivers. When I drive with my overseer (it's a legal status where you're considered fit to drive under the supervision of someone with a license so that you can train on your own as much as you need before the test.), I drive very well, and under very little stress. But with the examiner, I was so stressed that I just panicked at the slightest things, and thus made bad decisions, and judgment calls.
The final nail in the coffin was apparently letting a guy insert himself on the freeway despite me having priority (the guy was practically inserting himself, and with my city being known for bad drivers, I panicked and deccelarated too hard, which my examinator did not like because there was a car behing me sticking to my ass) I prefered to let the guy pass than risk an accident.
There were also other mistakes I made, that I don't make normally, but that I made under the stress of the exam. So I think i'll go into a driving school in the surrounding rural areas to pass my driving test next time. It should help with the stress, and without it, I should pass it ez pz.

Tl;Dr.
Exam = Stress.
Stress + City full of Jackass on the road = bad decisions
Bad decisions = No permit.

If you want to improve, making friends and constantly pushing yourself where your struggle has at least for myself been best way to do that.
People [especially those in that field] will notice people that push themselves far. Some here seem to have less growth compared to others and I feel that's the reason, you don't need to do dedicated practice, traveling towards what one struggles with, and continue to do them, not necessarily all in one go just often enough that those lessons are learned.
Don't let your visual identity hold you back from doing things that'll look a lot shittier than what you usually make. If its at least a bit challenging, its probably where you need to go.

In regards to attention, if you're not at least moderately skilled it'd probably a futile effort until theres the skills that can support that level of attention. Its just RNG where one's ability shows if they can continue that momentum. Going for popularity seems more self-destructive in the long run, just try and make individuals happy, and it'll spiral into more.

You could do some variation of draw a box first couple of lessons for better pen and ink lines. Like trying to draw through the same line multiple times, drawing two points and then conncet them with a straight line and draw some circles and lines. Helped me being more confident and loose with digital art. On paper is hard to beat though since the texture of the paper gives imidiate feedback and kinda steadies your line paths with the grit of the pencil and paper.

Picked up my drawing tablet stylus after it collecting dust for a good year and a half, and the first thing I thought to rapidly (and poorly) doodle this particular cow.

Stylus to canvas is straightforward, but my brain really struggles to line up where the strokes are gonna begin relative to where on the Bamboo I start it, and region specifying would be a bit more intuitive if there were some... glowing rectangle overlay or something. Anyone know if such a feature exists in a program for drawing tablets?

you need to study pony anatomy and proportions anon, no beating around the bush with it. best thing you can do is to break down screen shots into their core shapes and measure the proportions then keep them in mind when drawing ponies in the future. also studying how real horse joints work and having a basic understanding of their movement helps a lot and will help prevent you from breaking their limbs in uncanny way. also I'd say focus on getting the anatomy and proportions right before moving on to more complex poses and scenarios, being comfortable enough with that may lead you to an easier time with figuring out more challenging poses. I say may because everyone learns differently at different paces, are ready to advance at different times, and no methods are truly universal in art.
>picrelated
If you measure the sizes of the circles in pixels then use the largest circle, the head, as the base line then plug the numbers into a percentage calculator it will give you a rough estimate to aim for in terms of your proportions. for example the butt in this image is about 64% the size of the head, with that you can take your brush and set it to a size say 450 pixels. using 64% as a basis for the ass size gives you 288 pixels, you can either round down to 280 pixels or up to 300 and go from there. I did that when first starting out until I got a feel for it, the only caveat being I don't bother with hand drawing circles I just set my brush to the size of circle I want then click on the canvas, I'm a mouse masterracist.
for the barrel/torso shape aim roughly for a bean shape.
for the face try to aim roughly for the pic, the snoot circle sets the size of the snootle and eye distance the box sets the length of the snoot and roughly where the nostril is placed.
Don't be intimidated by the horse anatomy its there primarily to so what joints you need to focus on in the legs and to show the nature of pony leg anatomy since after all ponies are merely chibified horses, its also very roughly done so don treat it as gospel.
If you need me to explain further don't hesitate to ask!

Okay.
You can't draw anything believable. The entire thing is like some piccaso cubism warped reality.

Your straight lines are a mess which will throw off perspective, the perspective for the table and anything on it is fucked., just look at that glass it's not even an ellipse. The chair wheels are giant shapes for no reason while the table has literal stick legs like a stick figure. The chair is way too big, the ambiguous keyboard is oversized compared to the pc.

The pony is badly proportioned to the chair, and badly positioned it doesn't look like it's sitting on it because you don't know how a pony sits. I don't know whats going on with the dots all over the pony but it looks bad. Is it a plushy with polkadots or a wearing a polkadot jammie.

The mane looks like a stiff mop, the eyes are too close together, the horn is huge and the mouth is a cats mouth.

And lastly the composition and linework sucks, you have tangents with the pc and the table merging lines makign it look flatter, depth is by good overlapping.

Start learning the fundamentals or try to copy/reflect like >>42258273 is doing If you want to make a 3d scene then you have to be able to think 3d, while right now your brain is in 2d symbol mode.

Based arthelp anon. Got a wip here that would appreciate some help if you've got the time. I know my biggest issue now is contrast between the characters infront and the background. Planning to lighten up the timberwolf later after finishing painting it. But I would love some thoughts on how to make the background have more depth. I don't want it to overpower the main subject though. As said appreciate the help if you got the time anon!
Anonymous No.42264430 >>42264505
>>42264400
The background looks great, but yes, gotta connect the characters to it.

I'd say, first, locate de main light source, even if it's faint. A very faint gradient coming from the top, in a soft shade of violet or the blue hue of the lake.

You can also achieve this by selecting the character layer and duplicating it, or (depending on your software) selecting the shape, then creating a new layer (empty) and adding the highlights with a very soft and big brush, low opacity, so you can control which areas receive more light, instead of a full gradient.

The important thing in my opinion, is shading the characters in such a way that the viewer can tell straight away that they are part of the scenery; so, grayish green for shadows, maybe play around with some other similar colors, especially if you can create a 'multiply' layer on top, so you won't hurt the main color layer if things go wrong. The mare is against the light, it seems, so she needs some sort of shading especially in the bottom left corner and on areas obscured by her mane. To counterbalance this darkness you can add on a 'color dodge/lighten' layer as a 'silver lining'; a kind of brightened line around her mane and exposed corners such as ears.

Lastly, after you're done with them, try adding a transparent later on top of it all and changing it to overlay, or multiply, or anything that will darken whatever is below. Again, try a faint gradient using the color of the forest floor. If you have brushes that are kinda cloudy, use those to erase bits of the gradient in order to give the effect of fog in front and around the characters.

Adding things like that in front of your two characters, and adjusting the color balance to something more blue-green + shadows, will create an atmosphere that will push them into the art, and not in front of it.

Personally, I use dust brushes to create tiny little particles floating in the air, reflecting the light, or fireflies (in front) so the viewer is forced into believing there is some distance between the foreground and the characters.

Sounds a bit complicated, but trying these things individually will end up helping in one way or another. I use Photoshop, but I'm sure other things have similar layer styles and tools.

Good luck! If you want, I can try just quickly showing a basic example
Anonymous No.42264457 >>42264505
>>42264400

By the way, just to give an example of how I'd try to approach the situation. Of course you can change the intensity, the colors, the brushes, etc. I realize that's not a shading style everyone likes, but it's how I'd edit the base image

Good luck!
