/mlp/con's Gamejam is two months away! (approximately) And this time round we'll do something simple, but different; Anons will get to choose the theme!
That's right! (You)'ll be able to suggest the Jam prompt and fellow anons will vote on it!
Be sure to sound convincing! As there'll be multiple voting periods
Here's how it'll work:
Prompts will be gathered from May 16 to the 28th
On May 29 the first voting period will start, featuring all non-shitpost suggestions. This voting period will end on June 5th
Last voting round between the top three [Or two, depending on the results] suggestions will be held from June 6th to June 13th.
Afterwards, the game jam will start proper
All dates are GMT-6
You better behave anons, Contard here will have to go through all your suggestions, you wouldn't want to upset her, would you?
------------------------
For the Jam itself...
NO SKILL LEVEL REQUIRED! ALL SUBMISSIONS WELCOME!
I'll admit, last one could've gone better. But I've learned from my mistakes! So, this time there'll be a few changes on how we do things:
>Devs will have a little more time to submit their games
>Late submissions are still accepted! But not guaranteed to be showcased on stream, on time submissions will take priority. (They will, however, be mentioned. As well as added to the game jam page)
>Each game will be showcased an average of ten minutes. This depends on the game however, if the entirety of the game takes place on a single screen and can be fully completed in three minutes, its time may be shorter than 10 minutes.
Also, I recognize I was too drunk last time, I need a somewhat clear head for this. So, I'll cut back
If you're thinking of participating, please sign up! I'm aware that not everyone that signs up is able to submit a game, and that's okay! But I need an idea of what I'll be working with for the panel, and for that I'll need a heads-up in the number of potential games in the jam!

One would have to basically remake the player model and animations from the ground up to make it look decent, maybe even edit the decomp code to better handle it. Would be easier to just make a "Mario in Equestria" hack where its all simply just custom levels, honestly, I'm surprised no one has done something like that in a whole decade, even if its just one or two courses.

Keep an eye on the anchor, I might make some more changes depending on the voting results, we've got enough choices to maybe need a third voting round! But that'll depend on the results.
I've also combined some prompts so we don't have too many similar choices and to make the prompts more open to interpretation.
Prompts such as:
>>42198763>>42198751>>42202878and
>>42197591>>42201805Also, I don't think I'll be adding, the "Make this specific game" prompts as options, instead I've interpreted to their core idea:

>>42202564Platformers = Jumping

GOD I LOVE BIOLOGY. https://www.deviantart.com/donitz/art/Neuropony-415876701
This month is a literal and figurative nightmare. I needed something to keep myself busy for a while, so I threw this together from some old pony assets I had laying around and a couple of artificial intelligence classes I based on this guide http://www.ai-junkie.com/ann/evolved/nnt1.html
A pony in this game has a single chromosome.
Each pony is controlled by their own neural network (a very small very simple artificial brain).
The artificial neural network is wired according to the pony's genes.
The neural network takes input (what does the pony see around it), runs the input through a network of neurons and produces an output (what does the pony do).
The pony with good genes have a higher probability of being selected when producing new chromosomes.
A new chromosome is based on two other chromosomes, mom and dad.
There is a chance that there is a crossover between the two chromosomes (at some point they both flip their genes).
There is a chance that each gene will mutate.
This is artificial evolution according to some very simple rules.
>>42214940Oh, that's real neat! I'll check it out later.
I can shill it on the panel if you'd let me, I want to get more eyes on the entirety of the pony gamedev scene, it's bigger than I thought it'd be, and I'm sure anons are in the same boat in terms if ignorance.
>>42196241I'd like to see a game jam where you have to make a game around one of the G4 toys/playsets. For example, you could make a game around Twilight Sparkle's Balloon, Applejack's truck, etc. It gives enough freedom for people to make games in a variety of genres, but also ties them to a few unifying elements, as I assume people will probably pick the same few playsets.

Vote casted, let's see what all wins with this cool little jam-o.
>>42217009>Edgy horror games and shitty horror games are 2 categoriesHuh? Oh well, at least pony hobbies is winning. It's easily the best category that actually lends itself to multiple genres, and it's deceptively creative. I think it's better for a theme to be a jumping-off point instead of a straight up genre like "strategy".
>>42223173Agreed that both should be 1 category

seems like a lot of time spent for no reason
would work even faster if strawpoll had a "single transferable vote" voting system and we could just rank our choices so that if our first vote doesn't win our vote gets transferred to our second option and then on.
>>42223385I believe in you! Things really only have my interest if pony is sprinkled in. I'm trying to keep the scope small in case the coding is overwhelming. Focusing more on the art might be more valuable.
I like the vote but no reason it has to last over a week every round
GOD I FUCKING LOVE TRAINS. THEY'RE SO NEAT.
>>42222293
>>42224149I assume it's to buy time so it's closer to /mlp/con? But it'd be nice to start earlier so games can have a bit more polish if the dev(s) want to do so. Personally I think this round of voting should wrap up by Thursday at midnight, then just have a vote for the top 10 choices (combining the 2 horror subjects into 1 vote) that lasts a week. That way people can get started a week this Saturday.
>>42225233>That way people can get started a week this Saturday. No, the point of a game jam is that everyone gets a short period of time to work. What would actually happen if we had a month long to do it is that the majority of anons would simply procrastinate until the week before the con, and so we'd get a much greater difference between anons who have the time and willpower to work for a full month and the beginners making their first games. It's better to level the playing field and also keep the time pressure element of a jam.
Alright! Sorry about that! I traveled out of my state and I think I got caught in a rangeban
>>42223173>>42223209Crap, I didn't see there was a repeat, I thought I caught them all, sorry! I'll only count whichever is at the top (if anyone would share a pic of it I'd be forever thankful)
>>42223856>>42224149>>42225233Yes, the main reason why I do the long votes is so I can build visibility before the Jam starts. Normally I get people saying they would've joined if they saw the thread earlier, with these pre-Jam threads that number has reduced to almost zero.
I've already given a little more time due to the new more rigorous deadline, I think if I give any more it'll be counter-productive. As we're going right now I think we'll do two more voting rounds. Probably between the top ten as
>>42225233 suggested (the two horror categories will be combined as one, that was my fuck up, sorry again).
Then we might do a top 3 final vote.

>>42217009Tomorrow, we'll head on to our second round of voting, ve dure to not miss that!
>>42228460I sure do love voting.
>>42228014Location-based games are nice, but you waste a lot of time creating assets unless the assets are already available.
I myself wanted more Cloudsdale & Crystal Kingdom. I think the past jams themed around Halloween utilized the Everfree Forest a lot.
Also regardless of what gets picked my concept works and can be interpreted with the top 6 things that were picked such as Pony Hobbies & Management. And if Horror gets picked then I can simply add a "money" system that increases the longer you play and it all gets taken away at the end of the game to give you a fright, better than a screamer in my opinion.
>>42223385You can do it anon! I think Jams like these are a nice way to start, they give you a morivation, a prompt and a timeline. You also get the satisfaction of having your game be seen by other people en mass

Hello OP
I think this year theme system is kinda weird.
Why are we having a genre as the theme? It would only serve to restrict the kind of games we're doing this year.
Lets say if strategic wins, we'll see 9 strategic genre games, which is kinda lame.
>>42235014agreed, why are there genres? game genres arent themes, you should be able to make any game genre about the chosen theme
>>42235014>Why are we having a genre as the theme?Because that's what anons suggested
if it's suggested it goes in the hat
if anons don't want it, they won't vote for it
>>42235192https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFgcqB8-AxE
>>42235014This is why we should all rally under the glorious banner of the FRUIT!
Vote NOW and prevent a disaster!
I think a better "anon's choice" could have been choosing from a list of defined genre, and allow people to voice in extra themes.
Most people are too retarded to suggest an actual theme. This way, you could have an example of what makes a genre.
For example, you could start out with few themes, such as "horror, comedy, action, romance, mystery, steampunk, space, adventures, wild west", and encourage anons to add onto it.
Since that boat has long sailed, I would suggest making the winning "theme" the extra point theme, and the theme for the games can be chosen between the top three, or even better, a combination of any of the top 3. This will bring some variety to the jam without making it it too broad.
>>42235014>>42235192>>42235286I actually thought of this, that's why the option says "strategic" instead of "strategy". The theme isn't strategy games, it's the word "strategic". What I tried to do here
>>42211875 was molding suggestions to be more open without dismissing them outright. IF strategic wins, I plan to make it clear that it is NOT talking about strategy games, I'm going to stretch the word to its absolute limit, with both the description and OP image. If you pick up what I'm putting down.
Example:
Strategic...
Approaches
Victory
Partnership
Plan (Like a heist)
Position
But you did give me an idea. I might just add a fourth option in the final poll with the three finalist that's just "Combine the top two themes into a single one", depending on what wins. Maybe we can separate it into team horror and team fruit, for example.
I'm open for suggestions in this final bit. I still want it to be "anon's choice" after all.
>>42235346I'm biased and I will confess that I voted for fruit/Pony hobbies/Horror
>>42235346>I actually thought of this, that's why the option says "strategic" instead of "strategy"Be real, Anon, the retards itt aren't going to comprehend the difference when they're voting. They see "strategic" and think "I have to make a strategy game".
All this popularity of strategic makes me wonder if a Fire Emblem style game would work with ponies.

>>42235346>IF strategic wins, I plan to make it clear that it is NOT talking about strategy gamesI see what you mean, but that's very unintuitive. As said before, every game contains strategy, but when people here the term "strategy game" they think of stuff like the Civilization series, the Total War series, maybe the Sim City series, etc. Slow, sometimes turn based games where you take on a managerial role. Which is why it's extra funny that "management" is another option.
Anyways, Fruitchads rise up.
>>42243375Yeah, but we'll just have to see how it plays out. Nothing's set in stone yet! I might even add an option to combine the two top answers in the final poll. Who knows!
Are these game jams generally done solo or in groups? I've had some experience making games previously and would like to get back into the swing of things, but I'm beyond fucking rusty, my knowledge of how to make things is about five years behind now, my code is terrible and sob story goes on. I'm not sure if I could even put something presentable together on my own nowadays, how simple do these jam games generally end up?
>>42244714>Are these game jams generally done solo or in groups? Can be either, it doesn't matter. But like 95% of them are solo projects.
>my code is terrible Thankfully no one is reviewing your code, so as long as "It just werks"(โข), no one will care if the code is crap.
>how simple do these jam games generally end up?Typically you have an idea you over-scope, and as time goes on you cut features because you don't have enough time to implement them. Then the last 24 or so hours is a mad dash to just get everything working and in a playable state.

>>42245445Kind of want to see how a porn jam would work
Could it work?
>>42246485Not really. Game jams work because you barely need any graphics at all to make a game, and it's incredibly easy to cut and paste various images into graphics for your game. So you don't need to be an artist to make a game. But for a porn jam, unless you want everything to be text based, you need to have some artistic ability.
So I mean it could work, but you'd need artists, and then you'd need to convince them to learn a bit of programming.
Do we have to make the assets (pony models, levels etc) during the jam? What's the limit on premade assets?
>>42247404The spirit of the Jam is to make the whole thing in the allotted time, we have olenty of time, I don't think that'll be much of a constraint. No limit on premade assets, so go wild!

I'm asking for this because, even though I know not everyone who signs up ends up with a final product to show, it'll give me an idea of the rough volume of games I should expect, helps me prepare you see!

Honestly strategic may be too complicated of a scope for peoples skill level

Here's your strategic management game.
>>42250412"strategic" is a bland as fuck theme
>>42250412>strategic may be too complicatedi love democracy
>>42250412you can make strategy out of anything
>>42249827c'mon fruitbros we can still win this
For the first time since the open alpha 150 people joined LoE Legends of Equestria MMORPG at the royal old sisters castle(TM)/Midnight Castle inside Evershade Forest to celebrate the annual grand galloping gala.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0Sf9w8bzfU&ab_channel=a1KMan
They had an airshow where pegasi drew a flower.
They had a fashion show.
And then they had a riddle event.
They had alt accounts dressed as guards guiding the newbies how to reach the castle in the first place cause you needed to go through 2 areas in the Everfree Forest and use a teleport trick and some platforming to reach it. Somehow 150+ made it, the maximum limit per server.

The number of players was due to summer and Equestria Daily reminding every corner of the pony community that LoE still exists.
Normally the game's gala community event is held in Canterlot, but this time randomly it was held in the everfree forest for the aerial show reason and which was an accidental good thing cause the tiny gala room cannot keep 150 players in it, let alone an airshow.

>>42256090That's pretty cool anon but I think you're in the wrong thread
>plan on a strategy game
>hobbies and froot won
>>42258411You can still do strategy, if you just have to adapt it for the theme. If fruit wins just add fruit as a resource, if hobbies win just replace the units with toy soldiers or similar. You don't have to scrapt an entire concept if you've already thought it out
How are the games coming along?
>>42260731we haven't picked the theme yet anon
>>42260731As the other anon said we're on our final voting phase to start the Jam, which it does on tuesday
>>42249827
>>42260731You see, the theme ahs not been voted yet.
>>42249827Since fruit and pony hobbies are both popular options, can the jam just have either as the theme? Seems like it might disappoint people to have one over the other with the interest in both.
>>42261353I think one theme would be ideal, since what I'm getting from the votes is that people are not a big fan of combining themes. Worst case scenario second place can get its own Jam in 4 months
>>42261353I second this. I think making a game for either fruit or hobbies should be accepted. Hell, you could have a competition between the two. What category gets more games, the fruit category, or the pony hobbies category?
Anyone else thinking we should merge? The themes into a single event?
>Froot wins
>Imagine all the farming sims
>>42261781>>42261353>>42262220This is a bad idea, having multiple possible themes will make the jam feel more cluttered (not to mention entice anons into more scope creep than they do already). It's best to have a single, simple theme so that the focus is on how creative anons' takes are and not just which they chose to focus on.
>>42263632Nah, fruit vs hobbies is more fun.
We'll do one theme for this Jam.
We can decide if we either do only the second place for the next Jam, which is around in 4 months, or combine it to do a double themed event with Edgy/shitty horror games (It only lost by one vote).
jammy bump
give us the prompt already, i could've been working on something for weeks
>>42264942It isn't supposed to start until tomorrow. You'll get the prompt tonight. You've got three whole weeks to work on the game
>>42265356>You've got three whole weeks to work on the gameYeah but I'm shit and barely know what I'm doing.
Three weeks isn't enough for brainlets like me.
>>42265490Yeah I get you, I'm not a programmer or an artist either. Try to aim for a small game with repetitive but fun gameplay, like old phone games like fruit ninja. I recommend you recognize your abilities and use them to scope your project size realistically
>>42263632I'd usually agree but the vote is nearly tied so people seem split on what they'd prefer.
Personally I just want the option though because I already thought of a game idea I think would be fun and that I want to make but it's fruit themed and just don't have any good inspiration for a pony hobby themed one if that one wins instead.
Could see some other Anons feeling the same as people have been thinking about it for a bit with the assumption with one of those two themes will win for a bit now.
It's whatever though, if Fruit doesn't win then I'll probably just make it anyways even if it doesn't get accepted.
>>42266599>I'd usually agree but the vote is nearly tied so people seem split on what they'd prefer. If that's the case (and it's a ranked vote so it's not like the vote shows any strong dis-preferences, either) then we ought to just flip a coin.
>>42266599And it's kind of lame that you'd just disregard the theme, the whole point of a short time limit + single theme is that it puts pressure on people to be creative.
2 hours left!
>>42266599If you make a game I'll include it in the showcase. Just try to bullshit me into explaining why the game fits the theme
>>42266599Just my 2 cents, but going "I'm going to ignore the jam's theme on purpose" is kind of a dick move. I think the vote should decide things and that's it, no bargaining.
t. fruit voter
>>42267101>>42267203I am not going to force myself to work on a game I don't enjoy the idea for, I already tried to think of a good idea in the pony hobby category but couldn't come up with anything I like. It's either I do fruit or I don't participate, and I actually wanted to participate, so I am doing fruit.
Imo game jams should not have a mandated theme, Ludum Dare for example only gives bonus scoring for matching the theme, it's not a requirement. It can help force people to think outside the box a bit but sometimes a theme is just ass and uninspiring especially if it's not vague enough. Really the reason larger jams may require a theme is just to prevent people from starting early if anything since it's usually announced right when it starts.
Rolled 1 (1d2)
>>42196246Time's up! And it looks like we have a winner!
Now, before I write the rules of the Jam, I'll take
>>42267096 since there seems a single digit difference in the voting results and it even looks like people in the thread can't come to an agreement. Normally I'd just be a tyrant force one theme for this Jam, but in the spirit of keeping it "Anon's choice", I'll flip a coin
1 = We stick with pony hobbies
2 = We make use of both pony hobbies and fruit
You guys do realize that fruit can be a pony hobby, right?
>>42268065>>42196246Result: The theme will be solely Pony Hobbies.
Fruit will be the theme for the next Jam in 4 months as compensation!
Now, just as a reminder, if you make a game, I'll showcase it, there's no contest here or disqualifications or anything of the sort. But following the theme and sticking to limitations is a fun way to get creative!
Necessity is the mother of invention and all that
>>42268080Also yes, farming/cooking/whatever can be a pony hobby
The stuff mentioned in the OP about the jam itself still apply. I'll write the itch.io description in around 12 hours when I get out of work.
Might also make a new thread announcing the Jam starting.I'll let you guys know when to migrate
>>42268065Shame strategic didn't win.
>>42268158You can still make a strategy game. Maybe ponies LARPGing?
>Pony hobbies win
>Imagine all the farming simulators
>Pony hobbies win
>Anons still make games about fruit
Froot cultural victory
>>42268685>Anon just picks a pony whose cutie mark is something fruit relatedCheckmate, hobbyfags.
I'm glad hobby won. It's a good theme.
I probably won't start for a full week, but I do want to participate.
Also, up.
>>42268096>hobbies winOh boy, time to make a game about Rarity's evenings prowling the Ponyville streets (it's a hobby because she does it for free thrills)
You can just make a pony hobby game about fruit. Bat hobbies or whatever, why is this an argument. Be creative, thats the point of a game jam
>There was a submission last gamejam that was a WarioWare clone
Man, this gamejam would've been perfect for a WarioWare clone
>>42270782well, you could make a warioware clone clone
doing fruit anyway. just be happy ur getting mares
>>42271087Faggot, if you want to make this game so bad then make it on your own time. If you can't put in the bare minimum of effort to follow the same rules as everyone else, then why are you participating?
>>42268065>hobbies...the fuck am I supposed to do with that?
>Tfw my game works for both fruit and hobbies
>>42271648>Mayor Mare likes to recreate historical battles with homemade miniatures so you make an RTS with a cardboard coat of pain>Rainbow likes to race RC cars so you make a racing game>Pinkie likes to go around town and talk to ponies so you make a cozy dialogue heavy game>Fluttershy likes to sing and dance while alone in her cottage with her animals and you make a rhythm game>Cadance likes to go around town and use her love magic to make ponies fall in love, so you make a top-down shooterCome on anon, be creative, I'm basically giving away all my ideas over here.
You can either think of a genre first or a pony first. But there's plenty to choose from.
Twilight Sparkle's hobby is to read biology books and talk eugenics while having sex on a soapbox.
>>42271997hell you could make a rhythm heaven-like game where you cycle between these different hobbies like minigames.
Itch page updated with the same info posted in the thread. For those who care
>>42274228New thread so newcomers won't have to shift through all the voting stuff, also, because we might hit bump limit before the showcase and I'd rather keep the Jam stuff centralized in a single thread
You can let this thread die and migrate!
