>What is SS13?
Space Station 13 is a multiplayer online game similar to Find the Traitor games like Werewolf, Town of Salem, and more. However, it is also a detailed atmospherics simulator, as well as a great venue for roleplay and immersion. It's set on a space station of course, and the players must work together in different departments to keep it running smoothly - until the traitor explodes the engine core and everyone dies.

This server has a /tg/ update that was made for April Fools but works as a normal game. Pegasi, unicorns and earth ponies were added each with their own unique ability. The current development plan is to create an Everfree Forest region for the ponies to visit and mine as a snapshot preview of the big picture: an Equestria Simulator where plots and shenanigans that would fit into the show can play out. Conversion of existing systems is planned: antagonists can be reskinned, departments like science and chemistry can be converted into magical research and alchemy, et cetera. Vibes are MRP but fun IS allowed.

We had a really good discussion about development goals last night, here's a summary:

The Everfree Forest is a great idea for either a Lavaland alternative or an away mission, but it needs to be properly lethal. I propose incorporating mechanics from Civilization 13 which increase the mundane lethality. In that game, jungles were especially dangerous because of poisonous/unpleasant insects, fish that would bite if you waded into water, and ferocious animals being everywhere. The Everfree could also have chaotic weather like rain storms and fog which might not be dangerous on its own but would amplify risks from everything else.

I will now expose my own powerlevel. Here's some lore I was thinking of for the station that's mostly for flavor but fills in some gaps:

Central Command is a small land-based headquarters that maintains constant contact with the station in orbit of Equestria. It is a human-built installation with a heavy level of security. It is home to the Long Distance Relay, through which messages can be transmitted to and from the Earth, light-years away.

It is staffed mainly with humans, most having arrived in the first wave. As such its security personnel and Emergency Response Team are highly experienced and well trained.

All crew transfers, emergency evacuations, and incoming traffic, must pass through the CentComm station. IDs and bags are checked, and then a shuttle takes new crew up to the space station, while receiving incoming traffic.

>Where do the crew stay?

CentComm as an installation is built to house a generous amount of human staff. There is a barracks, a commissary, and other things one would typically find in a long-term installation comparable with military or navy bases in foreign locales. Designed to be a home away from home for the humans operating the station, it has most modern comforts.

It is also reasonably close to a Pony village, which is where many Equestrian citizens prefer to live and stay, making a short commute to the CentComm station to work on the station. As time goes by there has also been some overlap, with some Ponies choosing to stay at the barracks, whether for convenience or because they enjoy it - as well, some Humans choosing to live with the Ponies in their village.

>Timeline of events

The two species have had a long history of receiving each others' radio signals, mutually influencing each other's culture unintentionally. Though Ponies remained less technologically advanced, Humans were driven to explore and to find the source of the signals. Despite attempting contact, the long distance of light-years between their planets made it impossible to actually make a connection. Interstellar transit was developed and expanded directly as an effort to make contact with the source of these strange signals.

Some decades prior to present day, after long years of the cumulative effort of all Mankind, First Contact was finally established. Humans crossed the vast distance using their cleverness and technology and discovered a strange world wrapped in mystery and magic.

The First Contact Fleet was able to establish the CentComm station and base as their foothold, and were welcomed by the Ponies and their Princesses. The Diarchy sanctioned their visit and gave them leave to stay as long as they agreed to honor the Ponies' laws. A period of mutual study and exchange began, where the two cultures often clashed.

The Second Wave arrived some years after First Contact, with greater numbers now that the trail through unknown space had been charted. They brought construction supplies, but more, they brought the means to mine and manufacture more; a satellite was built and launched into orbit, which would eventually be expanded to become the Equestrian Space Station, also called Ponystation.

Their journeys through space revealed more than just the Equestrian homeworld though: changelings, xenomorphs, and even the existence of Magic in its many forms, not all pleasant and appealing... Unwittingly, they had shown the way not only to their own kind, but to anything that might wish to infiltrate or infest the station... or even the planet Equestria itself...

It has been at least 20 years since First Contact, but the Second Wave is a much more recent arrival. Ponystation as a construction is essentially brand new, and many Human arrivals are completely new to the idea of talking horses, magic, and more. As well, Ponies find Humans to be fascinating and strange just the same, and their technology to be either fully baffling, or endlessly intriguing. More and more Ponies are taking an interest in Human technology and culture, and as a result, Ponystation has a growing pool of willing but naive Pony staff.

>What are they doing here?

Ponystation is officially a research satellite meant to investigate the strange phenomenon known as "magic" as well as other anomalies like bluespace, supermatter, and more. As well the presence of extra-terrestrial intelligent life is likewise being studied heavily.

Its secondary purpose is to mine valuable and/or anomalous materials from the planet Equestria, and the planet closer to the sun they call Tartarus: full of dangerous beasts and sweltering with lava-oceans but rich with minerals. Materials sent to CentComm are either packed for the long return to the Earth, or processed for further application to be used in the development of faster-than-light transit, bluespace teleportation, and more.

>What is "magic"?
The only thing that is truly fully clear about magic as Ponies experience it, is that it is innate to the planet Equestria. Organisms on the planet seem to have adapted to the presence of a "Magisphere" that envelops it much like its atmosphere or its electromagnetic field. Much as life adapted to breathe air on Earth, life on Equestria has adapted to the constant presence of magical energy. Many Equestrian species exhibit magical properties, from flora and fauna to the intelligent species of Ponykind themselves. Experiments to determine the origin of these powers are still inconclusive.

CentComm has access to cloning facilities, but the process is 1) costly and so comes out of one's paycheck, and 2) requires tissue from the extant body, most usually an intact brain. Simple tissue samples are kept on file for all NT employees, making cloning a possibility across the board - but with some drawbacks if the brain is not secured. On intake each employee is given a full "imprint" scan that logs their data at that time; however, unless updated, that scan however old is what NT uses to clone an individual. If the brain is collected, a new body can be grown and the brain placed inside; this allows for memories to be kept. But if an entirely new brain and body is cloned, the memories in that brain will only be current to the time the imprint was taken.

The mood system is similar but can be largely ignored outside of just acting almost exactly like how the old food system worked except space drugs and other vices are actually somewhat desirable because of it.
Surgery is expanded, there's multi-Z-level areas on some maps (the current one on pony station doesn't have any) and lavaland fauna and flora is quite reminiscent on how migrants can use mushrooms and other greens in their inhospitable path towards the north.

Other than that, not really. They tried to make medical brute packs and stuff also act like how medical works in lfwb but they just look like sutures.

Mainly nutrition heals a lot faster and affects mood quite a lot.

The way the old food system worked was very simple, if you are fed, you walk at normal speed and if you are starving, you walk slowly. There was no mood system.

The new food+mood system is a bit more convoluted but essentially, if you're well-fed and have average or good mood, you are at normal speed. If you are sad or upset by something, you may take more damage, may trip on things, make take longer to do actions (say, climbing on tables or crafting things) and generally move slower. If you are starving, you move slower and can contract diseases easier. If you're sad AND starving, you are massively slowed down and everyone can notice at a glance.
If you are in a REALLY GOOD MOOD you perform special actions (like crafting with higher quality and things like that) move very slightly faster than normal, can "shrug off" more pain (but not actual damage) and in general you get a lot of bonuses and boosts to many things in general. You get amazing mood from food that your character really likes, drugs, booze that your character likes and things like that.

It's interesting seeing the meaningful difference between "it's always up and play whenever" vs "it will be up at Specific Date and Time". Always up seems like a good idea, but ponies drop in, see it's empty, and then leave, instead of being like "hey I'm ready to play if anypony logs in". But as well, it seems like Friday and Saturday have more ponies playing either way, and other days ponies have other stuff going on.

I WANT it to be laissez-faire HRP, and by that I mean, I want it to naturally increase to a level of quality which is cinematic and emotionally compelling to its participants, whether that be because it's super funny, or because it had drama and tension and the characters acted with verisimilitude. But the idea is to get there naturally without any admin interference, babygates, et cetera which "HRP" is known and hated for. I think it can be done if everypony just like, agrees that's what they want.
But I'm also not going to stop anypony from like. Doing what they want as long as they're not intentionally griefing. I think most users just really want to enjoy being a silly pony and that lends itself more to MRP and up than the LRP of "i do meth and i have a huuuge afro". I just also don't stop anypony from doing the second thing either

Okay well they're silly for being like that. It's trivially easy to screenshot what you made your character like and just make it again. There's like 4 options; hair type and color, pony type and color, and name. Just write down what the hair is called and the hex values. This is what I did until we got our sloots expanded and I wanted more than 3 characters.

You see, you'd have a point to stand on if you, obviously the DDOSer, weren't both russian and also utterly destructive to the service that you want to turn open source.
Even if they did cave in, you'd just be open sourcing an... Ancient master server and browser client that has already been decompiled and reverse engineered at least 6 times over the past decade by entirely different groups for wildly different reasons, with some that did it for other games that aren't even tied to SS13.

It could legitimately be a noble cause IF the path that you guys are taking wasn't also killing the service itself with its approach and it, honestly just sounds like a lousy excuse to not have literally everyone hanging your heads over a lamp post if they find out who and where you are.
Because what are you going to do if they make it OS? You're gonna help them out and find better solutions for how laggy it is? You're gonna develop new features and make them work in synchronous multiplayer for free? Bull. Shit.

Yeah I had no idea about them either. The farm is like just to the east of the lavaland mining outpost. You can breed them and stuff and they have different traits and colors. They can swim through lava! Very cool.
