I think s5 is where the balance in writing peaked, some of the best characters introduced and the season has had a few of the best episodes in the entire series. Makes it slightly above s2 in quality, which itself is a bit better than s1.

Yeah, honestly cmc just doesn't have the character dynamics to keep going as long as it has. To be fair, trying to compete with the mane 6 is pretty hard, since the mane 6 have to be one of the best character selections I have ever seen. Seeing the cmc interact with their older siblings is one of the few interesting interactions that the mane 6 can't really provide, but most the rest of their shenanigans are pretty nonsensical.

They're not bad characters, but they don't have a strong enough dynamic to support their own episodes. They work best helping the mane 6 characters to become more mature by learning lessons about being an older sibling.

Not that Anon, Stare Master it had some cool ideas. The danger of the Everfree Forest is emphasized, Fluttershy gets a new facet of her character, and we get to see the unpolished relationship between Rarity and Sweetie Belle. Show Stoppers is the archetype of "CMC doing CMC stuff", and it does it to such an extent that "let's go Crusading!" immediately became a cliché plot. My least favourite is rather Call of the Cutie, which is just Apple Bloom being annoying and finally introducing the other CMC hamfistedly.
