It's now been 10 years since the 100th episode aired as of yesterday! Many panda rings were thrown that day.

There are plans to have a small stream of the episode tomorrow (15/06/2015) at 12:30PM EDT (4:30PM UTC) and then just chilling afterwards with some related videos. (This was posted really late so turnout will be small, but will run anyway because more pony is good.)

While the episode had been teased nearly a year before its airing, it only mentioned the return and focus on background ponies rather than the Mane 6. It wasn't until April 2015 when more concrete news started coming in. These were the first signs that the episode was going to involve the fandom in a very big way. Finally on 30th May, the fandom exploded. Two promos released, showing lots fan favourite ponies:

The fan pandering was real: Button Mash, Vinyl with a very wubtastic setup, Doctor Whooves and Octavia have British accents, and not only Derpy in a prominent role, but Derpy *speaking*.

Reactions were positive to mixed. Some were very happy with the big shoutout to the fandom, while others were concerned at the influence they had on it and wondered how the episode could still work while pandering to this degree. There were other concerns too. Button Mash's short appearance sparked discussion on Jan's C&D: will they pair him with Sweetie Belle, does he talk (maybe why ShadyVox couldn't say much about the C&D), will he play more video games? Stranger still, some didn't realise Button Mash was an actual character in the show and not Jan's OC up until that point.

And then there was Lyra and Bon Bon a week later. A single still image of them looking at each other, but it said it all. The fandom once again exploded, barely recovering from last week's freakout. Some said it was intentionally taken out of context, others were very convinced that the ship was now 100% canon, but that was overshadowed by whether the show would outright name them as lesbians. Other shows at the time were already starting to do this and MLP doing so was the cause of much heated debate.

Despite these, barely anyone was prepared when the episode finally aired. It was completely stuffed with fandom references: Lyra's "I cooked them up and ate them" and the benches she sat on, Twilicane, Steven Magnet actually being called Steven Magnet, etc. There was even a sharked being jumped and two frames of the MLP crew wearing horse masks, and a very heavily implied "just friends" relationship between Lyra and Bon Bon. Reception was again positive to mixed. The episode was obviously very different from the rest of the series. Some said it tainted the show and they could not consider it an episode, but others said that was to be expected for an episode intentionally crafted as a big thank you to the fandom. Derpy being credited as "Muffins" in the credits also re-ignited a small Derpygate discussion as it made Hasbro's final decision on her name very clear.

MLP-MSP was running that same weekend and M.A. Larson just happened to have a panel there. He revealed that he was initially against the premise of the episode but Hasbro execs pushed for this episode to happen. They were even responsible for the bugbear's panda appearance.
