I had a dream last night involving Rainbow Dash. Aliens were invading Equestria, and for some reason, Rainbow Dash had four wings and at least as many personalities. None of her personalities could agree with each other on anything.

One of them was arguing that they should just get their "weapon" and destroy the invaders. Another countered that killing was wrong. Another suggested trying to reason with them before resorting to violence. One of Rainbow Dash's personalities was crying because of all the destruction the aliens were causing. Another was just frustrated that none of her could agree on what to do.

What eventually snapped her out of it was needing to go rescue her friend, who'd fallen into a ravine trying to get her "weapon" (nobody ever referred to it in any specific terms) for her from the temple it was stored in. I don't know what her weapon was or what it did, but I did know that nopony questioned if she'd be able to solo an alien invasion if she was using it.

This is like the fifth dream I've had this month featuring Rainbow Dash.

I find Rainbow Dash and Scootaloo's relationship so interesting because Rainbow Dash is essentially fostering a younger version of herself. Their relationship to me reads as Scootaloo being RD's protege, similar to Celestia and Twilight. Scootaloo is RD's future, RD's legacy, and an extension of RD herself. RD and Scootaloo both share the fierce hunger to realize their dreams and accomplish what most ponies consider impossible. RD is what Scootaloo can be with the right amount of dedication, hard work, guidance, and inspiration. Scootaloo is the potential, RD is the dream. The sisterly aspect of their relationship is cute and heartwarming and it highlights the softer more caring side of RD that few ponies truly know. The fact that the paragon of the pegasi race, RD, is giving herself to an underdog filly like Scootaloo says a lot about both of them. And you know RD isn't doing it out of pity for Scootaloo. She does it because she sees herself within Scootaloo and perhaps something greater that even other ponies are incapable of seeing. Likewise, if you wanted to take a more cynical approach to their relationship you could say RD represents success where Scootaloo represents failure. Scootaloo being the representative of failure where one's dreams clash with their reality. This would hit RD especially hard because she sees herself in Scootaloo and in the same vein of RD's characteristic egotism, she would take Scootaloo's perceived failures as insults against RD herself. This perspective of their relationship makes Rainbow Factory's main conflict intriguing to me because it explores their relationship on a different level. It puts Scootaloo at the forefront of their relationship and it gives a more nuanced answer to "What if I don't measure up to the expectations she has for me?". The dichotomy of RD and Scootaloo and their relationship as a whole makes them a lot more interesting than the other sisters IMO. Its a shame they didn't get more episodes together.

I dunno, the biggest difference by Scootaloo's own admission is that nobody has ever actually encouraged or praised her. Which also means Dash is the first person to do so and puts the entire opening of Sleepless in Ponyville into a sadder context.

That's true but they share the same attitude and they both have dreams that they worked tirelessly for. At the end of Sleepless in Ponyville, RD told Scootaloo that she was like scoots when she was younger. Like other anons mentioned, the fact that RD is supporting Scootaloo when Scootaloo doesn't receive much love from anybody else makes their relationship very endearing. A little encouragement for Scootaloo goes a long way.

I remember seeing a good oneshot fic where Scootaloo talks about how Dash has encouraged her to be a paralympian and professional skater, since she's able to do a bunch of tricks that other ponies can't, and is setting her up with trainers and stuff. It was cute.

“Ya ain’t never grown nothin’, Rainbow! That’s one thing I got over ya!”

“Have too!”

“What have you ever grown? Yer house ain’t got any soil, on account of it being so high up in the sky!”

Rainbow Dash pulled her nose back, and smirked as she turned and gestured with her head towards her midsection, swollen with life. Applejack gave her *that* look.

“Havin’ a foal don’t count, and you know it, Rainbow!”

“A foal is a kind of fruit. A womb is a kind of garden.”

“Now I’d expect this kind of fancy-shmancy word games from Twilight, but not you, Rainbow!”

“Besides, having a foal is something I’ve got over you, then.”

Rainbow Dash stuck her tongue out and, after some effort, flew away. Applejack wanted the last word.
