I haven't played the game in years now. I really need to get back into it, I hear there are some really nice tilesets around now.

Bright-Nights and EOD (Era Of Decay), BN being focused on combat and gaminess while EOD is focused on customization but is dead and full of russfags for some reason.

In game tutorial, videos explaining EU4 mechanics and plain ol' trial and error, only with playing you will get experiencie to understand this game, after that is just strategy and well planning.
The exception to the rule is Trade in EU4, do NOT try to get into trade, it functions under black magic rules, I barely understand it and I never actively use it, taxation and production will be your go-to money revenue.

Today, though, I've decided not to puppet Olenia and decide to stand alone. Needless to say, I got utterly rolled.
100 garrison divisions behind a river, behind 5 forts, with all the entrenchment bonuses in the world, and changeling tanks just utterly rolled them over. There has to be some secret that I'm not getting, something that I'm fundamentally doing wrong.
