I just thought of something: How is Opaline supposed to be evil in G5 when her relationship to Misty is identical to Twilight’s relationship with Spike? The only difference is the music and line reading is changed so that the abuse scenes come off as funny rather than scary. But it’s the same! In fact, Twilight is probably MORE abusive when you stop to think about it.

Does Opaline exist to make the viewers rethink Twilight and realize that they’re the same?

A robot butler. Twilight Sparkle is, first and foremost, a mad scientist, and therefore implicitly should have one. It doesn't matter that he's technically neither a robot or a butler: he's perfect the way he is and she's lucky to have him.

Opaline is not a scientist.

Neither. He's their "friend" which means he's a glorified pet. People will defend this till the cows come home but the truth of the matter is they don't treat him like family until that relationship is threatened. Spike should relinquish that control and learn what it means to actually be a dragon. It might be scary and cruel, but that's the reality he's going to eventually have to deal with. In Season 1 we've seen what happens to dragons when they get too big. They can't live around ponies anymore. I think the showrunners realized this implication in future episodes and retconned it so most of the dragons in the world are small.

Does this means dragons can't live together while they are small? No absolutely not. But contrast Spike to Smolder. She's friends with different species. She's not subservient to them.

Regardless of that, Spike is never treated as an equal but as an accessory. The one he claims to love with won't even let him let go of that delusion until he finally snaps out of it and she freaks out because of it.

In Equestrian culture, older sisters are expected to perform much of the child-rearing duties toward their younger siblings (see Rarity vs. Sweetie Belle and Applejack vs. Applebloom). This is probably doubly so for adopted siblings such as Spike. (It should also apply for Rainbow Dash vs. Scootaloo, but the show makes it clear that RD is pretty irresponsible when it comes to family matters.) A real tipoff is Fluttershy's relationship with her younger yet adult sibling Zephyr Breeze, who still expects her to look after him long after he should be out on his own.
