It's 4 AM and I can't sleep so I decided to make a thread finally. So I'm trying to work out the lore, so far, I decided that a ship of privateers out exploring crashed into an island with magical mushrooms that absorb the essence of any mostly-complete skeleton and reanimate it into a mushroom pony. The shroomponies can root to the ground to connect to the greater mycelial network and they need to absorb the memories of living beings in order to keep living.

I like the idea that ponies who get lost in the Everfree Forest become mushroom ponies. Like your idea, they can connect to marecelial network to commune with each other and share memories, thoughts, feelings, knowledge, snowpity, etc., but they can also be fine alone and free ranging. So, they are both collective and independently minded. When they become mushroom ponies they lose their original memories but maintain something of their character and personality. However, they acquire a mischivious nature that has them play tricks on travelers. They tend to have an absent but warm gaze, and sometimes they help ponies in trouble find their way through the forest if those ponies play along with their tricks. In general, they are good natured but they don't communicate with voice the way normal ponies do (they lose that ability) and they see normal ponies as strange and unusual creatures (they can't understand that they used to be normal ponies). Finally, they have a deep connection to the forest itself. They can feel it almost as an extension of themselves. They live a very long time, like the trees in the forest; several hundred years perhaps.

Hell yeah. I imagine some desperate families dropping off their terminally ill relatives in hopes they can survive in some way. There's probably a law against burying ponies in or close to marecelial network areas.

Yeah, I had that blocked into my original lore document as a religion that is celebrated but is also controversial with the newer generations, they basically have a religious rite, not everyone thinks the reanimated person is the same though. So they inherit the memories of their previous life. I thought the experience might transformative of certain kinds, a lot would be shocked by inhabiting a body that, strictly speaking, is not fully alive. The living part is the enchanted mycelial network and they eat rotting things so something fresh is seen as disgusting, like raw food.

Well, at the time, one of my worst fears is losing my memories and also I suffer from poor short-term memory retention and I wanted to explore that and identity-related things. Ego death and self-improvement can be so interesting. I'm aware it's basically "our vampires are different" and it's not wholly original, but it was just the way I wanted to play it. You're free to imagine your own system and variations on how things work. And if they don't eat, they wither away and are left like an empty shriveled husk around a skeleton over time.

I don't think it came up, but I'm still trying to figure out how the living body is puppeted and how the mind-body connection is. Like if they have sex, does stuff still work or does it just fire off the association to spore with a sporangium during orgasm? I initially wasn't sure about having like growing mushroom vines/roots/tentacles but I kind of wanted to lean into unusual biology more.

Reanimating sick/terminal ponies as mushroom ponies is a sick ass concept, I do love that part, I just dislike the whole cannibalism aspect I suppose.
I had an edge phase once, but ponies are my escape from the assfuckery of real life, so I tend to soften all of those edges these days.

Maybe a body has some sort of magical imprint of the individual within it that acts as a pseudo-soul? That way the magical mushrooms can create a proper imitation of the individual with their memories and whatnot. As for how the mushrooms control the skeleton maybe they begin to replace the flesh/organs/etc. with shroomy imitations that feel similar to the real things but function differently.

The fertilized egg could magically turn into a giant spore that plants itself in an appropriate environment for growth. Since a shroomfoal wouldn't be reliant on corpses to develop it would take way longer to get a corpse-free shroompony compared to the usual method of infecting bodies and maybe "second gen" shroomponies are also different from the regular kind in terms of anatomy.

I was headcanoning that the mycelium needs a connection to a pony skeleton to function but going with a soul imprint sounds interesting. I think that might imply a canon afterlife then or soul plane/world that ponies and people can go to when not alive.

That's why I mentioned it being some sort of pseudo-soul instead of it being just the soul outright as the implicaction of it opens a whole can of worms by itself. Personally I think that the magical imprint could be more similar to DNA? Unique in its own right and moldeable to a degree but not quite the essence of a being. Rather a blueprint of sorts that can create an approximation of the deceased pony
