In S1, ponies stand on two legs in multiple occasions (pinkie singing the Zecora song, Saphire Shore when she meet rarity, etc.)
But I would say that the last seasons being overall less cute, it hit us in the face harder when they do it.

I always wonder about the extent to which the modern-day appearances of small wild felines have been affected by feral domestic cat populations from nearby human settlements. This is an African wildcat, the closest relative to modern domestic cats, still a separate and genetically distinct species... but they pretty much just look like regular cats. And with them having been interbreeding with feral domestic cats for millennia, I imagine they looked at least a little different before domestication occurred.

But ponies are far cuter than any cat could ever be. The muzzle break is much sharper than a cat, the profile view anyway shows side set eyes. The reason they often look crosseyed from the front (one of my favorite qualities of pone) is because it's implying the eyes are side set and forcing to the center to see forward.

The best argument a cat comparer can make is there are loose catlike qualities. But ponies also share qualities with horses, aliens, powerpuff girls, bugs, and pool noodles. To simply say "cat" and be done with it is stupid.

I like takes on the ponies that make them look a bit horselike without being completely identical to an irl horse. Picrel I think is a pretty good balance of being realistic while still retaining the stylization in an appealing way. It's closer to how I imagine the ponies would look irl.

They really don't look like anything, they're canonically a completely separate type of creature than our horses. They're "ponies" in the same way that humans are "apes". We're an ape species, but we're obviously extremely morphologically different from gorillas and chimpanzees. So too are equestrian "ponies" from our horses.
