Found the source of the instability on Twibooru. We've been receiving double our request volume than normal, entirely from Singapore. I don't think we have many Singaporean users, so I set up a rule to always challenge them. We'll see if that helps stabilize things.

It's an interesting situation for a couple reasons. A lot of the content is barely pony related, and would need to be filtered, likely by hand. The creator of Lyrabooru is a good friend of Twibooru and has requested we don't mirror their content. I keep a local copy of it in case the site goes offline, in which case I'd then import it.

i used to be for raw archival, but then I struggled with the fact that the Bible commands against sexual sin, including lust. Last year during the horrid "everything is breaking" and going 25k in debt to rebuild most of the infrastructure I managed to pick up 60 6TB disks for $450. They're old, they're high hours, but they work, and allowed us to keep going forward.
I used some of them to start Z+'s actual public webhost, which JUST barely pays for itself right now, but I haven't advertised in 7 months for it, so that's a blessing that it's still going right now.
I'm using the remainder right now to make us a 130 TiB usable array that's 118TiB filled. Though that's not entirely all pony right now, and it contains multiple copies of some of our datasets. It's a stepping stone really.

As it stands our network storage system has 2 large arrays, 1 in use for Z+'s networked storage, and 1 in use for TPA's side of networked storage. I have 20 free disk bays in the box connected to the storage server right now.

With that in mind the next step I'm taking after I've made a full backup on tape, is to wipe some of the old previously used disks and repurpose them into a new array in the box. Some of the disks previously in use were 16 and 18TB disks. This is allowing us to move while always keeping 2 copies of data available.

I want to cut 1 storage unit, and TPA's old E5 server from the mix right now. Next we're cutting Z+'s original 2U storage server as the other Z+ server is a ryzen server. That's quite involved as I have to coordinate migrations with clients.

Place them in a 7 x RaidZ2 config with 2 vdevs, for a total of 4 parity disks. Usable space would be around 229TiB while costing 37 a month less to run. Over an average run time of 5 years I'd save 2220 on electrics alone over our current array.
Realistically I'll probably go with re-using some of our 18TB disks and purchasing enough at the end of mare fair to make an 18 disk array, 6 x RaidZ2 | 3 vdevs, with 189TiB of usable capacity.

Didn't Derpi do heavy throttling to fuck with "bad" people at one point? I was checking it recently to see what Twibooru hadn't scraped and images were loading like I was on dial-up. Large files would try to download at 10-20kb/s before eventually timing out. I first noticed this about two weeks ago, today I checked again and things are loading normally.
If whatever was happening was intentional, I don't know how I triggered it. I don't have an account so it couldn't have been caused by me downboating the wrong pictures. Maybe a referrer-based thing triggered by following links from 4chan/altboorus?

The Manebooru importer's brought a lion's share of duplicate pics, some better-quality, some worse.
The trouble with resolving those dupe reports is that Poner will refuse to import the better-quality pics if they get a Derpi import tag, and waiting for every pic to get ported to Poner leads to a huge backlog. And this isn't even getting into how Poner doesn't automatically detect dupes, so all those reports have to be recreated manually, but I digress.
