That's the main reason I fell off from hoofball very early on. If you're competing with players that just so happen to live closer to SL's servers, you're in disadvantage. This can be overcome by just playing more and getting a feel for it. You can overcome the connection issue and play very competitively. Hind is about as far as you can get from the servers and does very well. There are other ways to be a great player: awareness, positioning, ball control. I'd rather take a player who has these down than crisp ping and self-practiced trickshots. My problem is that yes I could train to try to predict the ball, but it's still CBT trying to e.g. use the shoot gesture 1/3rd of a second early every time. And even if with enough practice this becomes possible, you're still permanently at a disadvantage when e.g. somepony else shoots the ball and you can only see where it actually went and react 1/3rd of a second later.

Of course having low ping is not a free pass, you still need to actually develop skills in the game itself, learn how the physics behave, etc. It's just that you can actually focus on those things, while I would first have to focus on lerning to time everything an arbitrary fraction of a second earlier in order to be able to get anything done at all. It is painful and annoying and aggravating.

I've played some other video games on 150-200 ping, and it's always painful, but it's much more bearable when you know how to play the game in the first place and you have to adjust to the new timing. The opposite, trying to learn the game AND the weird fucking timing at the same time, is pure CBT and I will stand by that.
Also don't forget that normal games tend to have some netcode compensation so even high ping is synchronised to not look too horrible; SL's netcode is so amazing that players don't even see each other in the same places, let alone compensating for any kind of movement or physics.

When the lag spikes come, it's usually server lag. And that fucks up everyone, not just you. See video.

There's other things you can do to get better frames, though, and you only need to do it while you play! Go full potato mode. turn a bunch of settings down. Stop using firestorm and use alchemy for the fps boost. Close external programs. etc. 20 frames is kinda not great, but it's playable, and I bet you can juice it up to at least 30, which is golden.I used to play at ~22-30 fps for ages until I optimized my frames, not for playing, but so I could record better without adding more lag.

And just checked my ping, I have 90-110ms to the server on average, with spikes up to 180. The ball also got a boost to its listening range last week, so it's easier to hit with higher ping.

Ball not staying smooth/freezing/stuttering is a SETTINGS problem. Turn your draw distance up a bit and don't lower your object detail too low or the ball can de-render when too far from you, causing the ball stutter. Also keep it in view as much as you can! Upping FoV helps with it!

The ping "disadvantage" isn't a problem until you reach peak powy performance. And since you don't even try to play, I can guess that you're not at peak powy performance.

Do NOT drop it to 60. The field is around 100 by itself, and the ball will be extra distance above you. I keep it above 120-150. lower your max # non-imposters, instead. Has pretty much the same effect without fucking up the ball.

Also, another thing worth doing: put your viewer on an SSD and make sure the cache is on the same drive (the SSD). Shit will load faster, which reduces texture lag etc.

The field's exact dimensions are about 49m end to end, 35m wide and 30m to the cieling. At no point will you ever be near 100m away from the ball at any given time in normal play. 64m is a perfectly fine draw distance setting for firestorm for hoofball.

My guess is that the entire stadium, from sim boundary to the far parcel end could be close to 100, if the field makes up around 50% of that, 64 would be more than enough accounting for height
I'm reasonably confident even a crusty old laptop I could pull 20+ FPS on firestorm 6.6 if the settings were 64 render distance, LOD 4, 8 avatars with shadows etc disabled.

I also keep hearing alchemy runs the best but it's by far the worst for me, which makes me wonder if there's massive changes in viewer optimization not just between brands of hardware but between CPU generations.

For scenes like the hangout, object LOD 3 won't hurt, but likely won't improve much, 96 or 128 view distance will cut off some of horse heights rendering in from balti hangout which could help way more though.

The only other setting I don't view as entirely necessary for looking nice is max nearby lights, but I've also not messed with it to test performance or noticeable dip in visuals, I just figure "1000 lights sounds like plenty" and haven't cared to look into it more than that.

I can try this, if it helps then great, but it still won't fix the fact that all my inputs are lagging by a noticeable amount.

Uh no. Maybe it's only a "disadvantage" in terms of actual performance at that point. But it's absolutely a disadvantage in terms of making all the gameplay fucking painful rather than enjoyable.
As in, maybe if I had zero ping (and SL had zero script/server lag as well) I, right now, would be an equally useless teammate. In fact that's almost certain. But: in such a scenario, I would actually enjoy playing and trying to hit the ball, and I'd be able to have a feedback loop letting me improve faster ("I hit the ball wrong -> next time I'll adjust this", "I was in the wrong place for this shit -> next time I'll think better about where to position myself"). Even just the basic fact that it would be pleasant to play rather than deeply unpleasant would be a huge advantage.

Right now though, my feedback loop is more like "I didn't hit the ball -> I gotta react 250ms earlier next time", "I was wrongly positioned -> well I had no fucking clue where the ball was going so I should learn the entire ball physics to be able to predict them in my head before even being able to begin to play", "I missed the airshot -> well fuck me I gotta jump 250ms early AND hit the ball 250ms early AND predict its airborne trajectory 250ms ahead entirely in my head". These are not things that make for a tight feedback loop for quick improvement, and more importantly, these are not enjoyable things to try to improve.

By the way, I do realise that server lag affects everypony, and I'm pretty sure there's a noticeable delay in SL's scripting and physics too (though I can't tell for certain because my normal ping isn't exactly great). But the fact that it affeccts everypony doesn't make it less unpleasant to deal with. Yeah, going from 20ms ping to 60ms is probably more noticeable than going from 160ms to 200ms, but that doesn't mean it doesn't affect me; 200ms is still worse than 160, and still way worse than 60.
Some ponies have learned and good for them, but my point is that it feels awful, unpleasant, and like bashing my head against a rock. Hoofball looks fun, but when I actually play it it's emphatically not, and I guess I'm just not dedicated enough to spend hours on CBT just to see if it actually eventually gets fun once I practice enough.

After a lot of time adjusting sliders I am sad to say it appears firestorm's framerate is entirely stored in the render distance.
I stole camareas settings and got similar results in framerate, 7fps.
For my test I kept render distance and sun/moon shadows, everything else was cut or lowered and the best I could scrape without having tested a viewer restart was 10fps.
What surprised me most was dropping object LOD to 0 did nothing to improve my frames despite the entire sim looking like single faced triangles.

I keep hearing this but I keep telling ponies that - at least on any machine I've been able to configure settings for - it's on average half the frame rate as both black dragon and firestorm when using comparable settings and half as stable when doing anything besides sit still.
The one time I tried using alchemy and asked people why teleporting quartered my frame rate for 5 minutes they said "alchemy moment", so I either charitably figure it's vastly different hardware optimizations OR I go with my gut assuming half the playerbase just like "out the box" experiences and complain when default ultra is running bad at 256 render distance.
And that's not even accounting for the 90+ fps with shadows if I drop PBR and run firestorm 6.6

I for one am completely fine with Camarea not having super smooth frame rates.

Autistic description of time between frames when Firestorm is not in focus. So either when you're clicking around in some other window like your browser or when you have Firestorm minimized.
I usually have it set to 500ms, so 2FPS. You could even set it to 1000ms between frames, so 1FPS. Everything inside FS will keep working as usual, so you'll still get messages, hear stuff etc just the viewport will update slower. The moment you get FS back up and in focus it will be back to your normal FPS. It's also fun to compare the CPU load between Firestorm in foreground and having it minimized. On my PC with that setting it idles between 0 and 1% CPU and GPU load.
So with that setting you just minimize FS to the taskbar before sleep. Done.

BONUS:

Especially in summer I also suggest limiting your FPS if you don't need them on full speed (for example when just chatting. Especially nice for laptop users).
By default Firestorm will always try to squeeze as much out of your PC as possible to run """fast""" which usually means your shit will spool up like a jet engine when you run FS.
Try to set your FPS as low as possible and see if you still enjoy it. You WILL notice your shit will run a lot cooler (and with it quieter and needing less electricity).

And now try to remember all the times there were big scandals about popens getting the ban hammer for having so many popens in their home.

Not that I've heard. I think it was initially put in place back when Rose had a plan to let normgroids and furries and tourists rent on the sim, presumably to help make money, and the 4chan-ness rules would be primarily enforced in public spaces only. So you had the "no alternate hangouts" rule to prevent some furry from renting a parcel and just having a dozen furfags over at all times.

Another half of the motivation was that we were all used to only having a hangout and nothing else, and ponies were afraid that with an entire sim, everypony would spread out and the central area would look empty. There's precedent in other sims - if you look at common areas in LE for example, it's usually borderline dead, and most people on-sim are sitting in their rentals.
Of course that turned out not to be a problem, half because LE has almost no "community" so to speak so people only go there because it's where their rental is in the first place; and half because almost everypony loves visitors anyway so even when a dozen ponies crash at somepony's place, nopony minds that it's not at the hangout, and ponies fondly talk about "popen gravity" even.

Yea, this is a widespread SL problem. Baltimare avoids it partly because we're (mostly) not traditional SL players
