they are called human shoulders because of the exaggerated clavicles, making it kind of look like a pony head on a human upper torso. in most cases it's slight enough that it doesn't deviate from pony perfection much (a few times in the show they extend the clavicles a little bit too), but in that image it goes too far imo
pony shoulders kind of jut out of the barrel directly kind of like an actual horse, so if you take away the legs from a pony they would look like a slug thing with a barrel continuous to their neck, whereas if you take the arms away from a human you would get little wings on the side from the clavicles
in the right image you can see how the limb anatomy is only is visible beginning at the point where the humerus pokes out, unlike human shoulders

But still it's origin where show ponies basic stance is derived from, which they then go and break in cartoonish ways. The scapula is pointing almost straight downwards from spine and same goes with all quadrupeds, while human scapula is perpendicular to spine, making kinda T-letter. I don't mind anthro art really, when it's made with purpose and intent. But these protruding human shoulders on pony who looks biped for all other purposes makes me just think that the artist simply doesn't know how to draw quadruped frames.

Well that's a really interesting premise. I wish I had the skill to produce such art for you but I mainly just do composites based on work that I find. However, I can describe how they would approach the situation.

Luna controls the moon completely so they would approach the system carefully to begin with. Commander Taylor and the crew of the Icarus have radiation detectors that they provided the base that can determine the level of safety as they approach. Once the reading exceeds the level of direct exposure that is safe for humans the Princess turns the moon so that the base is no longer on the side of the moon facing the star. Then they plot a course for the field keeping in mind that the closer the moon is to the field the more it's gravitational field will upset the course of the asteroids and the more likely the base will be subject to bombardment from the asteroids they dislodge from their courses of orbit. Princess Woona also has the ability to control smaller asteroids so she can grab them and use them as temporary shielding as they go searching in the fields.

Under these things one thing they will make a point to search for are Rare Earth elements because they can grind these up and put them in ceramics and use them as shielding for the vehicles.
