Thank you anons for another internet pony convention, I had quite a bit of fun! Some thoughts I've amassed:
Con felt less... energized than this year's marecon, for whatever reasons, but still nice. Maybe this is why I don't feel the post con depression as much?
Blondie seems like such a chill guy, makes me wish I had a ponyfag grandfather like him to tell me those bedtime pony stories.
Russian fanfiction truly becomes easier to follow after 1000 hours in Paint, unhinged as it is.
I'm glad our resident IGN journalist keeps hosting jams, and I keep getting impressed by how much poni love gamedevs put into their games.
Pony court was pretty innovative, hope to see it again!
I wonder if certain technical difficulties could have been prevented, but they've mostly caused fun shitposting and internet ponies to be drawn, so that's a plus.
Fallen Oak moved ponies from main website to pony.fallenoak.org around 2025-03-14, is someone from their horsie community giving them hard time about ponies again?
Overall panels were pleasant to watch and participate in, the continuous pony creativity made me swoon, I've been reassured the ride never ends. /)
>>42333754Got everything saved on my side, except for closing maremonies and Wapa jumpscare (
>>42332970) because moonbutt made me doze off during CYOA. In particular I'm glad the Russian fanfic panel got downloaded without a hitch, streamlink with all retries increased continues to be more resilient to temporary internet drops on Picarto than yt-dlp with retries. Thanks for confirming before the con that you'd be archiving it as well, really reduces the stress.
>>42334438Anons voted for the con to be held on the 4th July weekend, hence why it felt less this year. Probably

Regarding the few anons that spoke up, I'm happy that a 3+ hour long story time was enjoyed. I'm all for doing it again without having to rely on a convention. Just have no clue when/where.
Since I'll be at Marefair, joked about it before but I'd still be open to just having a storytime when or wherever.

>>42333754Nice, thank you. Was really bummed I had to miss a few panels I wanted to attend.
>>42334438I am very grateful for you archiving things as well. CyTube barely holds together in the best of times. There's been 5 panels this con where I've had to edit the video back into the chat recording because the YouTube livestream got desynced (When a YT livestream gets desynced, it jumps back to the start and will randomly jump back again even after you click live again). Without having the raw streams I would not be able to fix them. And it's easy to miss the live links if you can't catch the panel live for whatever reason.
https://pony.tube/w/xgrNPLrixSxtKyiF45pnkV
I missed the hlvr stream, could I get a tl'dr on what exactly is going on here? Is it just a tech demo or a functional mod? At first I thought some of the characters were other players, pretty impressive that you can get the ai to behave like this
can I set something like that up myself? Couldn't find any guides online or mods on workshop

It's very interesting and exciting to get a glimpse into a section of the fandom that one never gets to see otherwise. And one could tell that the fanfics that you presented were probably of a very similar level of thought-out, engaging and/or serious as the ones we have in english.
But the high pace of your summaries, which some times made you just casually and out of context mention some of the bold and crazy plot points in the fics, coupled with the 10/10 visualizations, made the entire panel a constant barrage of hilarious, shocking and intensely entertaining content.
One of the best panels of the con, no question. I hope to see a continuation, especially to make sure that none of your fic visualization pictures go to waste!

>>42335246Okay anon, since you've appealed to the element of nerdiness and this is so cool idea that I think you deserve to know how it works:
Last chance to remain unaware.
It's pretty much a scripted play, in the theater sense. Anon hosting the panel runs Garry's Mod with VR mod and connects to a server where a lot of anons play roles of characters he meets during a tour of the map. AI is used only? for generating voices for the panel beforehand, and the anons playing NPC roles have keybinds for them or whatever. That's what I meant by Friendship is Magic - anons assembling together in quite large quantities to create a very fun experience. You can see them in "credits" of at least the 2024 marecon panel. Don't worry, it's pretty well done, I had doubts that maybe NPCs were actual AI due to e.g. lag in reactions which could've been explained by "running AI on the same PC", and the PC of hostanon coincidentally tends to have low framerate during majority of panels so far. I think after one of panels some anon explained that the map they had glued from four L4D2 maps or so was juuust at the boundary of what GMod can handle.
If you wanted to believe this was "real AI", I wouldn't blame you. Again, amazes me what anons can do together for ponies. Excellent job, magical even.
Technically the panel's idea was executed earlier in the form of HLVRAI, which you could've found online if you had a hunch to delete "MLP" suffix, but I'm still impressed by how cool of an idea this is with ponies. Anons truly are creative fucks.

'Fucking Around Interdimensionally' was an Amazing panel. Even though I don't necessarily agree with absolutely everything the presenter had to say, just the level of comprehension that man has for his subject is truly astonishing.
>>42336230I couldn't really keep up with it since I missed the beginning, but I do find the idea of someone becoming some kind of ascended being who gets pursued by interdimensional creatures because he fucked his pony wife very amusing.
>>42335585thanks Twilly, I later saw one of the ponies move their mouse up and down really fast so that gave it away, I just really wanted to believe that this was something a singular person can set up and fuck around with
as for hlvrai it was the only thing that popped up when googling stuff but I thought it looked gay so I never clicked on it
>>42333754If any anons see any issues with the panel recordings, let me know and I will attempt to fix it if I can. This con has been especially bad with YouTube livestreams. So far I've had to edit the video back into the following panels:
>Fucking Around Interdimensionally>The Antithology>Second Half of Derpy Doodles>Traditional Art Draw Panel>Worms Armageddon Part 1>Live CYOA III>Blondie's Panels>Watercolor Mares Parts 1 & 2

>>42337001How much do you think it will cost? Do you colocate or rent a server?
>>42337057Right now I rent a server (baremetal)
Price is about $200 or so a month
The question is how to proceed, whether to try and find a new baremetal server with more space (not easy to find actually) or move everything to maybe object storage
Either way will be a cost increase, only question is how much
Oh, and it's looking more and more likely I'll need to buy a new car soon, so stacking that monthly payment on top of pony.tube isn't going to help
>>42337088Just buy a used car and pay for it all upfront. It should be easy. Sub-$10k. Shrimple.
What is the Slam Jam thats going to be on at 8 PM EDT? Deciding whether to wake up in the middle of the night to watch it.
>>42335715I've got what seems to be whole stream (08:01:24) with audio seemingly fine, as I haven't noticed any gaps after seeking randomly around the file. I'll upload this to PonyTube for the panels playlist and reply with the link.
If you prefer I can also temporarily host the file I've got somewhere else, so that your edited video gets less reencoded stream, but I'm not sure if that really matters for this use case.
>>42337001I do not want to offer anything for now, but I've got a home server with let's say 20TB of free poni space on residential 1/1 Gbps (max...) ISP, unfortunately yuro so there's ~ 110 ms of latency on pings at least. For this reason I don't think I would want to offer it as primary storage, if anything maybe it could work as some tiered object storage for lesser viewed videos, or just a place for backups. In fact, once every sometimes I think about spinning up my own PeerTube instance for what they call in docs "Platforms redundancy" and connect this to PonyTube, mostly for fun, but this doesn't help in your current case of running out of primary storage space.
I haven't thought much about this, e.g. legal/DDoS/other ways some Babs Seed could cause me issues are a notable concern, but since this storage issue crops up on your side, I felt it's time to at least chime in. I've paid for this hardware upfront, I pay for electricity and ISP monthly anyway, in theory this could bring me near zero additional costs and ops time. I wouldn't want to create a SPoF for PonyTube though.

>>42337391Yeah, the fanfic panel is pending transcoding
https://pony.tube/w/p/kHaxG6h1EiPs553wZT5iDy?playlistPosition=25
>>42337080I don't have much experience in dealing with data centers, but would colocation be cheaper? Obviously there's more of an upfront cost to put something together. But you can stick like 4 drives in a 1u.
>>42337517This con I had these bash functions/well effectively aliases, with options haphazardly pieced together last year I think:
function m3s() {
streamlink $1 best -o streamlink-$(date -Is).ts --hls-segment-queue-threshold 0 --stream-timeout 10000 --stream-segment-timeout 10000
}
function m3y() {
yt-dlp --write-info-json --retries 1000 --fragment-retries 1000 --file-access-retries 1000 --keep-fragments $1
}
and I ran them with link copied by hoof from CyTube playlist, or browser devtools for AngelThump. I run both simultaneously in separate directories since I don't trust yt-dlp to keep going when stream hangs for whatever reason, on the other hoof that issue occurs usually with YT streams, but those can be downloaded as VODs afterwards so it's fine.
Honestly, this should've been automated years ago but you can guess that I'm lazy and scared of unexpected edge cases happening during con.

Been stewing on this over the past couple of days, but I've been trying to think of why this year's /mlp/con didn't quite feel as magical as years' past. It's not due to any one person or something obviously, but I wonder if people have similar thoughts.
I think part of the whole appeal of the con (besides poni) is it being a 4chan con, where you have panels that could only be on the board, whether big and fantastical or absolute shitshows or sometimes both. However, there seemed to be a lack of zany, off-the-wall, or simply outside-the-box panels like there used to be.
>Tulpa Panel, SermonAnon, Xx_SuperPonysplosionHidingInsideOfOurHousesSu33MyBigBlackNiggaDick_xX
>/mlk/ - My Little Firearms, , Plushfags Show & Tail, first Antithology
>vul's music production mega panel, XCCHI BLASTS MARE MUSIC, Sucking Dick for Charity
>Council of the Round Bale, numget birthday party, HLVRAIMLP
>Waifu Keyboards, Analyzing Cringe: The "I'm on a Yacht" Music Video, Dinner With Anon
I didn't even mention the interview shitstorms and draw panels that are usually a riot as well, but even panels like Painting with Lyric and the Game Jams/Slam Jams seem uniquely board-centric. There were some standout panels this year as well, but perhaps people settling into a rut of making panels that could be at any other convention could be one of the reasons.
Additionally, it seems that Purp has become the board's resident funnyman, and rather than anons making their own panels/art/etc, everyone's just waiting to see what Purp comes up with. Peoples' reliance on him to do everything (create panels, recruit artists, coordinate things, etc etc) could disincentivize anons from doing things themselves and encourage complacency. Now this is not to say anything against him either, I'm glad he exists and is such a driving force behind things, but the whole production can't be all him either (not to mention I can't imagine the stress he'd be under to deliver, the con's supposed to be a fun thing to contribute to believe it or not).
(continued...)
>>42341785There seemed to be a lack of art and I guess you could call them "niceties" as well. There seemed to be only a single new pic created for /mlp/con this year (pic related), and it was used for the OP of the End of Day 1 thread.
Meanwhile, it feels like Marecon, even though it's considered the "lesser" of the two cons, really set the bar this year for what an online con could be. Between the abundance of art and backgrounds (algo's song is a bit of the con identity at this point, although /mlp/con's used it too) and the marepoints system engaging chat, anons, and artists, it seems like there was always something at the con to do or look forward to engaging with, instead of kind of just sitting in chat. Does anyone remember that /mlp/con 2022 had an opening animation and everything? Even /mlp/con 2023 had a neat 3d graphic spinning loop to open a lot of the panels.
And of course, having the con on 4th of July weekend meant many US-based anons were spending with their families and thus absent, not really helping attendance either.
Now there's a ton of stuff that I thought was still great this year: the bumper ads were great as always, firlin messing with the channel css was fun, there was the antithology and russian fiction panel and CYOA III and everything, and perhaps I'm discounting things that can only happen organically, like the absolutely abysmal way the Shawn Keller interviews were handled or getting streams cut off cuz the police got alerted to a fire you started under a bridge.
I also wasn't able to attend all the panels this year so my view may not be 100% objective, but it really felt like there wasn't as much high energy this year as there has been in previous years. Even the aftercon party has been pretty lackluster.
So then why are things the way they were this year? Are anons not putting enough effort into panels? Not enough jank, chaos, etc? Are artists who would regularly help out just burned out/feeling they need to focus their attention on Mare Fair? Is prepping for the Summer Cup putting additional strain on people? Are people just being lazy and hoping somebody else will step up? Are anons just plain burnt out on cons?
And is there something we can do about it for next year? Advocating for people to create more promotional stuff? Providing ideas for panels? Letting anons know they can do stuff like suggest emotes, panelists change the chat background/font, etc? Could rebirthing the minecraft or god forbid ponytown servers help? Or CELESTIA FORBID a second life hangout sim? I dunno I'm just spitballing here.
TL;DR con was kind of underwhelming this year, and the lack of unique panels, potentially complacent anons, dearth of art and promotional material, and dates of it all possibly being reasons why. is this true and why did it happen? what could be done to help things for next year?
also where tf is the end of con survey corp get on this
>>42341788>Meanwhile, it feels like Marecon, even though it's considered the "lesser" of the two cons, really set the bar this year for what an online con could be.To be clear, one of the big differences between /mlp/ con and marecon is that /mlp/ con is organized 100% on the board.
Purp does a lot of work with others behind the scenes for marecon, he contacts artists asking for art, works with devs off board to put together tools and things like the point system, etc.
/mlp/ con is what the anons in the thread are willing to put into the event, and in recent years most effort is being put into panels (I disagree that the panels this year were lackluster, there were some really great panels)
Corp just organizes everything, he doesn't reach out to artists behind the scenes and usually doesn't even reach out to devs (this year he did reach out for the new website and the anonbot 4chan embed script)
Nobody in any threads this year made suggestions about, for example, running a similar point system, and no devs stepped up to do so
Nobody volunteered to organize anything more than just panels
Correct me if I'm wrong or I missed something
I do agree that the magic that surrounded /mlp/ con seems to have dissipated a bit
do we make /mlp/ con more like marecon? have a /mlp/ con headquarters where a group of anons try to run things?
work off board to try and put the con together with a loose team of artists, developers, and others?
how do we encourage anons to do more organizing on board?
honestly it feels like most anons are over /mlp/ con, but I'm always surprised how each year the pre-con survey shows a huge percentage of people wanting to continue the con
>post-con surveywe didn't have one last year either, but I can put one up again this year. give me a little bit

>>42341849I kind of wanted to do more for /mlp/con as is usually the case most years, just hard to find time any more. I ended up making my thing in a couple of hours the day before the con. I ain't much but it was a little something.
>>42341858Since I forgot to mention it in the form, maybe see if there's anything that can be done to make YouTube livestreams stay in sync better. I don't know if much can be done. But if there's any hiccup in the stream or you need to adjust the player at all during the livestream the stream will generally refuse to stay live and randomly reset to the beginning of the stream.
>>42341785>>42341788Personally I attribute this decline to Mare Fair, there's only so many creative anons around, and given the choice between the online and the IRL con everyone will choose the IRL one, so all the focus and creativity are siphoned there instead of being used on /mlp/con
>>42341867i know and share that feeling so much
>>42341875i know this feeling as well, it happened to me multiple times
>>42341858Forgot to put in my survey, but perhaps don't let anons make the final decision on the con dates. Putting it in the 4th July weekend was a bad move. They can vote, but you'd choose when
>>42341971I can kind of agree.
>>42341971This, I missed a lot because of the timing. The same seems to be true of many others. It's never a good idea to have an online con overlap with a major holiday or another con.
Unofficial addendum to the survey by someone unrelated to the con runner:
VENDORS
>Cheyenne
What the fuck were you even thinking?
>OTL
Why did you think it a good idea to shit on your buyers at closing maremonies?
>Others
Was vending at /mlp/con successful/worth it?
>the numget sound is from G! escape from midnight castle
>Playlist locked in cytube 1
See you space pony!
>>42342137>cheyenneprobably couldn't get things together in time, chill out pal
>>42342339I will NOT chill!
>>42341867This. I had a potentially fun idea to play a game with some pony sprites modded in and take suggestions from chat. Just never got around to making the sprites. I had a couple other ideas for panels, but they'd require a lot more effort on my part.
>>42341785Perhaps it could be that after being exposed to the grandeur of Mare Fair, in combination with this being the fifth or sixth board con, our humble little event doesn't seem as special anymore. The novelty has worn off a little. Of course, I'm sure people will miss it if it goes, like all things people take for granted. You have to also consider people are getting older. University students who may have hosted panels back in the early cons might be too busy with their careers or even families now.
>what could be done to help things for next year? The best thing to do would be to spend more time preparing panels and making trailers/advertisements for panels. Conceptually simple, but it does take effort. Magic can happen in a panel that's done on the spot, but it can also be done in a panel that's planned out. People should be encouraged to make silly little trailers for their panels to build hype. Even if it's a simple shitpost video, that still takes some effort and will build some interest (they could also easily be linked in the spreadsheet).
People just need to know that a dumb idea with effort behind it is likely going to be a ton of fun.
Really should be getting to bed considering I haven't slept for shit all week, buuuuuuuut
>>42341788>minecraftWe'd need a new team to either build a new map or take the 2021 version (or whatever version the Hidden Temple was in and still worked during) and update/expand it to be cooler, and a lot of hoping people will engage with it. It ended because everyone lost interest.
>artThere was also this, and an MGS themed one with Antithology text, but the mascots are hardly used at all, let alone any art of them. I can only remember 2021 when the guy who used to run /mppp/ got some chinese artists to draw a bunch of stuff being a time when there was a lot of con-specific art. It doesn't help that none of the panels or even things run by the con organizer really recognize that contard and conpone exist. Even anonfilly barely gets a role.
Maybe it does need that offboard organization or the organizer/anons invading generals and illuminati discord servers to try and get some art type participation and such going on.
I do think things are getting spread a bit too thin anymore. IRL cons are back (even if only one is worth attending ^:) ), we now have two online board conventions and the anniversary, and of course a lot of the big creative types, artists and animators, they're wrapped up making things for mare fair.
>>42341849>/mlp/ con is organized 100% on the boardSuccess and progress of the con would depend on activity on the board
>>42341858This is a crazy idea, but add a 3rd cytube channel, only accessible for the panelists to test out their connection an hour or so before entering the main channels
>>42342137>Shit on your buyersHuh? All I said was that it didn't seem like people were too interested in OC stuff. That's all I was able to offer at /mlp/con. It's not a guarantee either, because LEGO doesn't have every brick in every color available.
>>42341971not his fault retards voted for the 4th, where were all of you back when we were voting
FYI those randomized vendors on homepage seem to have wrong links sometimes, e.g. pic rel pardon phonefagging.

>>42346653I was. The point still stands. It's a funny mascot, but objectively not an appealing one. You're allowed to like it of course, but it makes sense why people don't have much interest in drawing it.
>>42346760Make it appealing, STUPID. Fuck, people will try to make an abomination like Twist look attractive, but a homegrown OC? Kept consuming growth pills for her horn, thinking that a longer horn would mean having stronger magic.. until Conpone told her that's not how it works. It's irreversible, but the other ponies came to accept it. You might think she hates it, but that horn is unique and makes her special, so she insists on keeping it that way. She can control where/how to bend her horn, so speaking in meta terms, any art of her horn is acceptable. Friends with Conpone.>Conpone: Fiery-spirited, level headed earth pony. Liked going to cons since she was a filly, and got her con cutie mark quick. She liked cons so much, some questioned if "Conpone" is her real name, or she changed it to that. She's a responsible con goer, and adheres to con etiquette. Spends her money wisely, bathes before going to cons, and still knows how to enjoy it to the fullest.
