Gen 3 literally wrote the book on cheery ponies. Much of the headcanon of a perfect Equestria with happy and kind ponies comes from G3, because that's what everyone had in head when G4 hit.

Don't believe me? Rewatch G4. You think you'll see snowpity but on rewatch you see them acting like asses to one another, losing patience, being angry often. There are scenes of them ripping each other off, etc. Their attractiveness over G3 is physical. But there was a severe lack of snowpity. So much so it gets assigned to background ponies, you'll notice. Snowpity in g4 was always us projecting G3 ideas into G4.

Need further proof? Finale-fags use the lack of perfection in Equestria to argue that snowpitiless finale is canon. They cite ponies being harsh and come with examples.

We created "Equestria" in fanfictions, because of all the preconceived notions. The real snowpity was G3 all along.

It's true though. Look at Kinderquestria. Bears no resemblance AT ALL to g4. But those ideas came from the childish notions that the "MLP" brand had going into G4. You didn't have to be a G3 fan. It was the cultural knowledge that MLP was cutesy and for little girls.

I do think there’s an argument to be made that even peak G4 was a little too embarrassed about itself. There’s literally nothing wrong with being a cutesy girly show. At all. But at least in the early days it still tried to be a girls’ show. The insecurity of the adult fans, latching onto whatever bullshit they could say is “cool” in the show is what killed it. The writers tried so desperately to appeal to those fucking losers.

What I always liked about MLP was based on an idea about what it was that can be seen nowhere better than G3. I only discovered a little less than a year ago how truly amazing G3 was. I had an intention to go and watch the older generations, but G1 didn’t do much for me and Tales was only okay. Once I finally saw G3, though, I instantly fell in love!

The first thing I ever saw from MLP was an upload of “Winter Wrap Up” from YouTube. I always wanted the show to have that level of snowpity throughout it. I distinctly remember feeling like even some classic episodes have unnecessary conflict. I just want a warm, comforting show that reminds you of how the world should be. G3 is that 100%! Saying peak snowpity is putting it too mildly. It’s so amazing!!!

The gripe with FIM is that it is often being said that the Mane 6 are the bestest of friends in all of Equestria, but then they almost never do anything friends do on-screen or very sparcely. Like, yeah, you got some obligatory picnic scenes here and there, but they get completely overshadowed by a good amount of episodes revolving around interpersonal conflict and bitching or them tard-wrangling each other. There are just not many plots revolving about the Mane 6 trying to do something nice for each other. There's like Party of One, the B Plot of Wonderbolts Academy, Castle Sweet Castle, maybe Fluttershy Leans In where the plot revolves around them trying to do something nice for each other, but most of the times they are more like colleagues who happen to hang out with and like each other. Whereas in G3 you have a whole plot revolving around the ponies of Ponyville painting the whole town pink for a birthday surprise for Pinkie. Yeah, in something like for exmple Pinkie Pride, there is also a huge birthday party, but the plot doesn't focus on it - the party doesn't matter, what matters is the conflict between Pinkie and Cheese.

That is true. The show’s depiction of friendship was always pretty flawed. It can be hard to understand why the Mane Six even hang out with one another sometimes. And in real life, there are groups of “friends” who aren’t really friends at all. They’re just socially attached and can’t admit that it’s not working, so they just fuck up each other’s days, talk shit behind each other’s backs, and start pointless drama. For people like that, they’d actually be better off without their so-called friends. So I think seeing their real friendship in action would’ve improved the show a lot.

Of course, that’s not even to mention the incoherent definition of friendship from the super late seasons. One of the most off putting lines is Starlight telling Twilight that she’s “in charge of all the friendship in Equestria.” Friendship is something that we should all be very grateful isn’t controlled by a top-down authority figure. Such a creepy concept. I didn’t even realize that that’s what her title of Princess of Friendship meant. I thought it meant that she’d use all her powers to encourage friendships, not to rule over them.

But that’s an aside because obviously the show was insanely bad by that point. I agree that even in the best episodes they don’t depict friendship the best. I think they were too afraid of being perceived as doing a baby show and focused far too heavily on the idea that there needs to be a conflict to resolve the whole time.

I personally don’t mind the early on ones that were legitimately just snuck in by the animators to make themselves laugh. I don't actually think that this is the case for the most part considering FIM stayed a slice of life show for the whole runtime. Shadow Play, which is mostly a trainwreck, is the pinnacle of that, but I feel like both Season 8 and 9 try to distance themselves away much more from that le hidden maturity and edginess: The villains and the battles are again way more cartoony and ridiculous: Sombra is a cackling saturday-morning villain, Cozy Glow is completely over-the-top and brimming with charm - the Mane 6 fight the Legion of Doom not with brute force, but with animals, party cannons, lassos etc. They even defeated the Legion of Doom with a friendship rainbow laser, which was not a very liked mechanic among bronies. All those two-parters felt deliberately designed to not tap into the same trap as Shadow Play.

That's what makes them relatable and a little "human like" without being too human. A major part of G4's appeal is that the characters are flawed and that the world they live is does come with risks and uncertainty but not to the point of being excessive.
