I have only seen 3 episodes of the show so far and the G5 movie with a girl, but at least I have consumed content like pony mods (such as Equestria at War for hoi4) or the parodies on youtube like tamers.

I also love the mlp infection AUs, I have consumed them like crack, they really capture the feel a modern audience would want out of the show and its characters. Which makes it weird that I never see infection AUs discussed here

Can I be considered a fan of the show? I already know all the important plot points and personalities of the main characters from reading anons' posts here too.

We're old horse fandom here, son. We like fallout Equestria with a sprinkling of rainbow factory. (I won't hate on the newer fandom for their infection AU though, it's honestly quite fascinating seeing each generation of the fandom have their own unique "edgy" phases)

And personally though, my enjoyment of grimdark pony generally ended with Fo:E. Pony is precious to me, I no longer wish to think about cute ponies suffering or being harmed.
I also only read the original book, not Horizons.
"A glowing light in the darkness" (or whatever it was called) was interesting enough that I got that one as a book as well, it's dark but it's mystery too so I quite liked it.

Actually, to answer your post a bit better, Infection AUs aren't really discussed here because one, we make fun of the part of the fandom that unironically got "traumatized" by edgy pony content they saw as a kid and won't shut the fuck up about it, and two, because the majority of Infection AUs are made by esl teenage girls on TikTok (I'm not joking), so it's not like there's much to discuss. The creators being literal underage girls posting shit for fun doesn't exactly warrant proper storytelling.

There is one (1) infection AU that I found value in. It is drawn and voiced by one person. It doesn't focus on zombie attacks, but rather on the ponies living in the middle of a crisis. It does take place immediately after the start of S9, however. In this AU, King Sombra succeeded in killing Princess Cadance. Everypony was so angry at Discord, even Fluttershy, that she demanded he bring Cadance back. Discord did, but it was done in anger and "unnaturally". The story starts shortly after Cadance's infection spreads, Celestia and Luna are missing, Discord is so hurt by Fluttershy hating him that he refuses to come back from wherever he's gone, and Twilight is doing everything she can to keep her friends together while other ponies are making their own groups to survive.

Again, this is the only one that caught my attention because it's NOT ABOUT ZOMBIE ATTACKS. It's about interpony relationships in the middle of an apocalypse. I strongly encourage checking out the first two episodes to at least see if it's something you'd want to get invested in. Here they are:

I've been lurking /mlp/ for about 2 years now and actually I've noticed a lot of people ended up experiencing the show the same way I did. I basically just watched up to Season 5 on my own but stopped, so now I'll just experience the later seasons through the Rewatch streams and Anniversary stream.

No, because it's not... fun. I like the ponies because they're cute but I'm not really enthralled by cartoons anymore so I was never in it for the writing. Earlier seasons were carried by how comfy and charming the whole thing was, especially the mane 6 being a really likeable cast, but the show ends up getting stale. I'm not even a lorefag but it seems later seasons don't even introduce anything new, just piggybacks hard off the little bit that was established in the earlier seasons. For example, Starswirl the Bearded was clearly a one-off character Twilight obsessed over but nobody else even knew who he was except for Luna. ...Until he ends up being the canonical best magic user in history. It's like me dressing up as Albert Einstein but nobody knows who the fuck I am.
