I believe the latter moreso than the former. She makes her children look after their siblings like any mother with a few (thousand) children would do, but she occasionally decides to show the young ones some affection. I've got some artwork and a planned story in the pipeline about just that, but I can't share the sketch with you because of her big bug tiddies. She's got to be careful that she doesn't sit on any of them when she visits the nursery.

My headcanon is that there are changelings on the outskirts of Equestria that are more starved and feral than the ones we see on the show and that use their abilities to cloak instead of imitating ponies, so their appearance is less ponylike as well.

In the summer of 2023 I had my first "real job" unboxing things from trucks and stacking boxes. The store was mess so I was excited to start organizing things--something I do in my free time. My excitement died when I was told, "to put things where you think they belong" on the first day. To make matters worse I was told three separate ways to find out when I was supposed to come into work by different people. I checked out and imagined the place was run by Discord; explaining why it was such a mess.

My favorite fantasy was that Chrysalis was being punished for her deeds by being forced to work retail in the store. I figured since she's a queen and all she'd have experience running things so she'd work her way up, somehow get Discord fired, and become manger of the store. People would start to love their job and she'd feed off it. Ironically, I ended up buying a Chrysalis toy with one of my pay checks so it was worth it.

You know the feeling when a gadfly sits on you to drink your blood? I think it's like that, on a bigger scale. You get a sudden rush of adrenaline for instinctive reasons, the bug is jumpy because it also instinctively expects you to swat it and wants to finish the hug before it happens, the hug feels a little awkward because the bug's legs bend in wrong ways, but mostly it's just tingly. To be fair the show also had the bug swarm use "bashing your head as hard as you can, backing up and repeating" as the best tactic they could come up with to attack a big shield. Sometimes the show just does weird stuff - we all know the interviews with writers talking about the love and care that went into S1, but that was by no means universal and also by the end of S2 was not necessarily still at the same level as during initial production of the first season.

Plus apparently in the show all changelings hated their queen and were just waiting for an opportunity to betray her if an easier food source presented itself. I dunno.

Changelings have pseudo-pupils, similar to the praying mantis Yknow how most pictures of mantises make it look like they're staring at you, because they appear to have pupils in their compound eyes? They don't really have pupils, since it's a result of how light reflects off the individual cells in their compound eyes, but it happens to look similar to the pupils in the eyes of more advanced animals. I like weird compound eyes that they can manipulate the appearance of with practice. They can change the hue and brightness of the individual lenses to make them show a specific. The usual low effort is a glow to signify where their attention is, since they tend to be in darker places. Chrysalis makes hers look pony like to show how superior she is and her skill level.

They deserve more than deriving the entirety of their quality as individuals from their raw convenience for others. According to saint Paul, love, among other things, is not self-seeking. Does my ever-present survival impulse render me incapable, or markedly less capable than humans and ponies, of using the absurdity of stupid unconditional non self seeking love as a trampoline into transcendental shit? Do I even have a soul? I can always go monk, genuinely forfeit my desire to survive and then seek out love anyway. Then, hopefully, it'll be sufficiently selfless and irrational to be legit. But can it be the best way to play my cards? It's a lot of extra work just to get where an average human or pony begins.
It's frustrating. There should be a better tradeoff to their peculiar nature than this.
