Back then, it felt like everyone was trying so hard to be unique that they they all ended up deviating from the norm in the same direction.
It's like how, when you're entering a bathroom, you think to pull the top of the handle because you assume it's less-used, but meanwhile the last few dozens of people all had the same idea.
