I’m convinced it was Haber’s idea, but Vogel definitely deserves a large amount of shit. Typically for this show, even if a writer hates the story they’re given, they still have to write what they’re ordered to. M.A. Larson made this very clear in the Q&A where he talks about “Fame and Misfortune.” He hated that episode and tried desperately to change it.

But with that said, the leaks do show Vogel as having written the outline for the episode, so he deserves more blame than “just a writer,” but I still have a pretty strong feeling that it was Haber’s idea. Regardless, the showrunner has the ability to reject shitty ideas, so it still boils down to him on a major level. If Vogel came up with it, then seriously, fuck him!!! But he sounded like he was compelled to write it when they talked about it in the 2020 BABScon Q&A.

Another thing that I remember is that Vogel instantly got all defensive and nervous when asked about that awful scene, saying “I knew this would come up.” He then offered some really, really shitty defenses to it, in a way that basically denies what the episode explicitly said. But despite that, I still get the impression that he’s acting like that because he knows deep down inside that it was the worst scene ever and that it completely ruins the entire show.

Haber’s defense of it actually deals with the process of how it was written, if I remember correctly. I’m pretty sure he has some bullshit excuse about how people “want to see old things come back” (like Discord’s stoning). It’s such a bad excuse for this narrative monstrosity that it seems just stupid enough to be from the person who came up with it. That’d make sense because there’s obviously no GOOD excuse for this abomination. The reason it was written has to be just as retarded as the scene itself.

Another interesting note is that they allude to what they’d do if they were working on G5 and mention hypothetically bringing the villains back. That was an odd thing to say in 2020, as it hadn’t been indicated at that point that G5 would be set in the same world as G4. This is what leads me to believe that they were told something about the plans for G5 and that inspired the rewrite from the original story, which was totally different and DID involve the villain’s redemption.

But anyway, I have too much to say about that and I gotta get to bed.
