There was nothing wrong with you or your friends as ponies or characters. The problem was literally every other thing around you five that happened after the magic came back.

This gen had interesting designs. I like how they tried to emphasize the humanlike aspect of the faces. If they just had less boxy, doglike bodies, maybe they would have been more well-received. People don't want to acknowledge it, but one of the biggest reasons why G4's designs were so loved was their sex appeal. Also their teeth were disturbing. Maybe I'll sound like a schizo for saying it, but they should have had canines. Molars and incisors without canines look creepy.
