This is the general thread for the alternative fan sites of the My Little Pony fandom. Discussion, development suggestions, and criticisms are all welcome here.

>Why alternate boorus?
The absolute state of Derpibooru has led to the development of various alternatives. Many altbooru staffmembers are present ITT, listening to comments and answering questions.
Note that this is NOT the Derpibooru drama general. Please keep posts about Derpibooru in the mlpg.co thread.

>Why alternate text sites?
Pastebin.com has been deleting pony pastes. FimFiction does not allow stories in the greentext format. FimFetch purges foalcon and other material deemed to be "unacceptable".

>Latest Developments:
*Ongoing comment and image spam on various altboorus
*Security issue on Ponepaste which allowed for anyone to view private paste titles, their authors, and tags (but not text contents) patched
*FimFetch escalates its ongoing purge of content deemed "unacceptable" (mainly foalcon) by hosting a list of accounts from all around the fandom (FimFiction, Dicksword, AO3, Derpibooru, etc.) claimed to be associated with said material leading Floorb to create foalfetch.net--for an overview, see https://ponepaste.org/9926
*TPA/Ponybooru server restoration completed, Hobune instance also updated
*Ponerpics image back-forward buttons broken (again)
*Brief Foalbooru server issues resolved
*Floorb finally bulk-imported missing images onto Twibooru, image processing queue bloated due to such.
*Total Spammer Death solution put in place on Twibooru
*Twibooru duplicate queue is reduced to two pairs of unmergable videos
*Ponerpics duplicate queue has several hundred reports awaiting an update to Derpi metadata handling
*Twibooru importer disrupted by Derpi API change; fix implemented and missed images retrieved (and again)
*Twibooru is bulk-importing images from Manebooru

If something goes on for multiple days and veers way off topic, I'll usually step in and tell them to cut it out.

So, since a bunch of governments are "coincidentally" pushing for internet censorship at the same time, it's a reasonable possibility "use a vpn" or "move your servers elsewhere" may be rendered useless. What are the boorus' plans for this potentiality? Out of all of them, only Ponybooru has made any statement (and that statement being it'll give up and shut down if censorship laws pass in the country it's located in)

Tor.
>decentralize pone access
There isn't many of us with enough storage space and bandwidth to provide truly decentralized services. By truly I mean that an arbitrary number of host going away not disturbing the service. For example to hosting youtube channel backups needs a lot of storage space. Even if 10000 anons run the service, each anon would need to chip in something like 50-100Gb to make it resilient enough.

Storage is fairly cheap these days. If we had something going, I'm sure Anons could probably dig up some storage laying around somewhere. I've pulled working drives from DVRs people were just throwing away for example. But how would we accomplish such a thing that would be relatively easy for Anons to access? Something with IPFS?

Ok, tell this to 10 thousand other Anons. Most people use only phones/tablets/laptops. It's pretty hard to put a 3,5" HDD into a laptop. And the average laptop only has ~500Gb of storage space in total. Giving 10-25% of that up for decentralized pone isn't something what most will do. Nor do they keep it running 24/7.

Best we can hope for is many more large archive sites, having 100+ TB content, mirroring each other. Some maybe not even on the clearweb, or just a hidden backup until needed.

I've been pricing out options of how to store the entirety of TPA as cheaply as possible for anons to hang onto / use. I can do LTO8 tapes now. They sit on a shelf, last up to 30 years, use no power, and can be read by anyone with access to an LTO8 tape drive. First batch is being verified now. 3 more batches to go for Gen 1 of our tapes.
>what's on them
Entirety of the /archive/ directory of TPA minus non-pony.
>What's the plan for the Gen 1.5/ 2?
Same data + entire booru backup + software to run it + way more data we're importing from many others.
>how can I get this?
I'll hopefully have a couple Gen 1 tape sets with 51TB of data for sale at mare fair, since tape is kind of expensive.
>what about actual usage
I'm coming up with a solution for a NAS system that's pre-loaded with the archive, and a local booru. So far they're expensive af though, HDDs just aren't cheap at this scale.

Tor doesn't totally answer the question though. It is an option to go around the law, but ideally you'd still want to locate your server in a place where you don't have to worry about it. Just to avoid any potential issues. Hence why I wonder what physical locations may be the best choices to host a server.

The issue is not where the server is located, but where the content is served to. I doubt that pornhub and any similar site has servers in the uk or any the us states where it ceased operation due to the age verification laws.

A working LTO8 drive is 2000-5000 dollars, so those tapes are effectively useless to 99.9% of people here.
Also, tape drives verify data as you write to them. Verifying it again yourself is just a waste of time and wears out the tape prematurely.
>>42409328
The reason it's called a Tor "hidden service" is because it's impossible* to determine where the actual server is located. It could be a box in your closet in a country with such restrictive laws that you're not even allowed to own a computer, and as long as you don't tell anybody, nobody will ever find out that's where it is hosted.
*without a coordinated, long-term attack from an actor the size of one or more entire governments.

I got the drive at a significant discount compared to market price. I'm only verifying the initial first tape run to ensure no in-flight data was corrupted in or out. (Why was the drive so cheap?) Tapes are rated for a few hundred to a few thousand passes, and drives are rated for... a while. Verifying 5 tapes won't hurt it, and would help give us peace of mind on the project.
>The tapes are still useless
If all hell broke loose the data is still there and can be recovered in the future. It's not about immediate restoration in this case, and buying a set is just getting another full copy out there in the wild.

Generally speaking, the main laws that matter are the ones where the server is located. That's how it's always been in the past. It would be insane for anything else to be the case. My point being, why take on additional risk if you don't actually have to? And it would be nice to have pony sites on the clearnet for as long as possible. For one, infinitely more discoverability than a hidden service. And two, slightly less risk of actually illegal content/spam. The day may come where hidden services are the only option, and it would be good to have something in place before that time. But my I ask my question moreso from the perspective of someone considering starting a new pony website on the clearnet and trying to determine what US state would be best to host it in.

How do you guys manage an instance of philomena without losing your mind?

Vite breaks the second you do basically anything with it, like putting the server behind a proxy or just using a domain name.

I threw up an instance just to fuck with it, but holy shit just trying to apply SSL with a self signed cert is making me want to nuke this POS off the face of the earth.

Docker's network fuckery is bad enough.
I was surprised there was basically zero documentation, now I see why, this shit is run by masochists.

It looks like it is part of the web app's docker container, looks like there is also caddy, vite, postgres, opensearch and some other stuff I have yet to poke at.
You basically have to dissect all of it to find any one thing seems like.
>The Docker stuff on GitHub is for development only
Gee... if only that was written down somewhere....
Where do you even get the normal releases? They come to you in a dream?

Looking more broadly, Twi also introduced this (the Ukraine is still just an alias though, not the main tag, unlike in Ponerpics). None of the other boorus have this so far, it seems.

We added the alias a day or two ago so as not to break images imported from Ponerpics

We are discussing development of alt-boorus, namely, dubious as fuck tag naming decisions.
In the same vein, why did oc:ukraine get aliased into oc:holhorse on Twibooru and Ponerpics? It doesn't even make sense with a portmanteau, because the word is "hohol", not "holoh", and it doesn't follow oc:marussia because Marussia is a specific character that became synonymous with ponification of Russia while Ukraine started as a ponification.
>>42412132
>>42412193
>the Ukraine is still just an alias though
Speaking of, whoever janny copypasted oc:holhorse from ponerpics (looking at you Meddle), the tag is implying "the ukraine" and implication of merged aliases has historically been glitchy.

I still have an opinion that "oc:Anon" tag is the peak of retardation. First, Anon is personification of either all 4chan users or an arbitrary 4chan user, and ponification/personification is different from "OC". Second, he is not MLP-specific, so he's just a "character", not "original character". Would you tag Slenderman as "OC"?

A few notes. I'm including basic information just in case you need it. If you know what you're doing already, great:
-- I made some minor changes to the default derpibooru file page parser (and thus, the FPPs for other philomena boorus) that comes with hydrus, the main one being the "origin tags (not creator)" content parser. Without it the downloader will not get any purple tags other than "artist:" tags. I'm not experienced with regex though so it's crude and may not function exactly as expected. Change it if you know more about regex than me.
-- Hydrus to the best of my knowledge can only rate limit itself by domain, and not by parser. For this reason twibooru is limited to 1 request per second due to the enforced 60rq/min limit on the endpoint the gallery api parser uses, even though the file page parser should theoretically have no limit (in actuality, it depends on how fast hydrus processes the downloaded image file just as much as it depends on your internet speed.)
-- Derpibooru has a 20rq/10sec limit for similar reasons
-- Neither twibooru nor derpi's cdn is limited because I don't believe they have enforced rate limits. It shouldn't make an absurd amount of requests anyway. Again, it depends on how fast the file is processed just as much as it does on internet speed.
-- If you want to use "my:upvotes" or a similar search, you'll need to open/duplicate the gallery URL generator in question and add your api key to the end of the url template. It's not hard. Just add &key=YOUR_KEY. I don't believe the order of parameters in the url matters. Gallery url generators are located under Network>downloader components>manage gallery url generators...
-- If you want to use a different filter change the filter_id in the GUG to the number in the filter's URL page. If it's a private filter you will also need your api key.
-- Each booru has two post url classes to encompass both [SITE]/images/123456 and [SITE]/123456. Keep that in mind if you add other philomena boorus later.
-- I don't think I've touched the twibooru parsers in years. They may or may not need to be updated by someone more competent than me.
-- open Network>downloaders>import downloaders... and drag and drop the attached png there to add them

to the anon who forwarded me instructions on setting up the warcs for anonpone - I ran into some trouble trying to get the wacz command to work:
when I navigate to the directory where the warc parts are and try to use wacz in wsl it says command not found.
I can install wacz again, then when I use wacz it gives me an error:
ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'pkg_resources'

I think that is a different problem, and I am not getting access to the command because of environment variables. Even though I run pipx ensurepath, I still feel like that step is the problem.

I get the same errors on wsl and a desktop running ubuntu - not sure what I'm missing. I've tried various things to get setuptools reinstalled - as that seems to be the cause of the no module error - but nothing has worked just yet.

EU, US and other countries will probably follow suit, it was already taken down not long ago. VPNs wont be enough if others take it down too. I think that it will affect a lot more than people think. I'll repost my thoughts from the other thread:

>I believe these laws will affect any site with user generated content. They're not just about porn. They're about any content deemed "harmful", something which will vary wildly depending on who you ask. Remember that it only takes two swears for a movie to be rated r and to require ID verification to see. The internet is (mostly) filled with real people with real thoughts and emotions. Which can sometimes be vulgar. And it's not just that the site does contain such content, but the possibility that it could, which is always the case when you allow people to post.

>The end result is most of the web getting ID-gated or region locked if the site operator doesn't want to comply. Even if a site operator did want to comply with these laws, it's probably not going to be feasible for anyone but an already giant website. If the site owner does it themselves, they are incurring a huge risk and burden because if they fuck up they could expose their entire userbase to identify theft. And even without that, people would be wary of handing their ID over to some random on the internet (as they should be). The other option is to use a "trusted" third party, but those aren't cheap. I think I heard Reddit was paying $1.25 per ID. For someone operating a small hobby site out of their own pocket, it adds up fast. 1000 users would cost $1250 to verify, not something the average person could incur as a regular cost. And that would be in addition to exposing people's browsing habits to a third party who will do Celestia only knows what with the data. And it's not like you could even crowdfund it either, as that would require a community to draw from, which you wouldn't even have the chance to form in the first place.

We need a (pony) forum to discuss this kind of shit off the clearnet. Not anything related to /mlpol/ (because of politics making glowies lump us together with "alt right extremists") or NHNB (because it's even more restrictive than /mlp/). Some place like /poner/ but with thread-level IDs and politically neutral.

Completely useless unless you ban posting from vpns

Do you have a proposal that contains the EqGfags running roughshod over the board currently?
If not, then don't be surprised that someone's taken the extreme option- which at this point is the ONLY option left to take.

The exodus after the hack to /poner/ proved that EqGfags are not the problem, it's the moderation holding the hand of people who use barbies to troll. On /poner/ they stuck to their few generals.

Ban EqG itself, don't ban ponified EqG but encourage anons to shame the faggots who post that, alongside shaming anyone posting any other foot-in-the-door shit like griffons.

P.S. Also, have patricipating in that permanently blacklist you from ever getting janny positions.
This will require having staff willing to piss off and oppose everyone, even former and now taken over by demons closest friends.

And yet jannies mostly issue warnings when I spam their threads instead of bans.

If derpi's cdn has rate limits, add the limit under Network>data>review bandwidth usage and edit rules>derpicdn.net. I am not aware of what that limit might be.

The reason why neither mlpol, nhnb, ponychan, etc failed is the lack of critical mass.
When ponychan (the original) / mlpchan was a thing it was working. Once /mlp/ opened and ppl flooded here only the hardcore ones remained in the other chans.
And also combine the altchans with the lack of 3rd party services (extensions, archives, etc) made them inferior.

Anon, it's not for what you have in mind. Thread level IDs are great for general discussions.

Still no use case, there's a name field already.
Tripfag if you must.

The use case is retards on this board are too stupid to recognize ragebaiting samefags. 90% of this board is shit up because of less than a dozen people arguing with themselves and the 70 IQ mouthbreathers who stop jerking it long enough to open a thread and get mad.
>but muh vpns
It raises the bar of entry, however slight. That's enough to deter a few.

Only option for this once bans hit is to pick one backup board now and get everyone to agree on it before bans hit, plaster it everywhere on /mlp/ so no one misses it.

Last time fragmentation into different forums completely separated the regulars, not to mention the anons who'd never even heard about mlpol, nhnb, etc, so they just didn't do anything.

I was on nhnb, and it fucking sucked, threads were all many years old

EQGfags didn't even know any altchans because they're normies, that's why the only problem was the Shimmerfag trying to stir shit between mlpol and nhnb.
