I would have liked knowing what Spike did earlier in the story. It makes the spanking feel more justified. If you want to make it a surprise, you could build up to it. Twilight is annoyed at the start, so you could have Velvet make a comment partway through. "After what you mailed to Celestia, a sore bum is the least you deserve."

Maybe tomorrow Spike will have to write 50 times, "I will not send trivial mail to the Princess." And be instructed to mail THAT to her highness.
