Bonbon is no worse. If you pretend that here eyes aren't red, then the only complaint about her is that her hair is a little sideways. Their noses are also not exactly perfect.

The background is a fucking photograph.

In other words, none of the components of this image are unpleasing, in terms of artistic quality. Together, they form a perfectly normal image with passable composition, in terms of position, color, size, and objects.

The only really repulsive thing about the image is that it depicts abuse.

They’re badly drawn squints and the texture is BEHIND them, not ON them. Eyeballs bulge out three-dimensionally. That means that a bruise that’s on your eyes would stand out from the surrounding part of your eye. Seeing it overtop of the texture gives this really creepy, ugly look.

This image contains a texture which is flat and static in direct contradiction to the motion and shape which is being conveyed by the subject matter in the same location. Looking at this image in motion creates a mental contradiction which has to be chewed on, which is a bit of a bother, intentionally. They share this. It's actually more extreme in the gif.

G4 was lightning in a bottle, but the thing is that lightning fucking hurts. It's bright and loud and ornery. It is fast, and directed not by the will of a crafter but instead a massive condition which seeks to release itself using the path of least resistance.

Every season, you see exactly that play out. The show is a directionless beast which demands work and slowly contemplates its own lack of direction, eventually giving up and collapsing back into the status quo. The employees involved quite famously struggled under this demand, and nobody was really able to create what they wanted fully under these conditions, which resulted in things like eqg and pony life. Twilight, just like hasbro, ultimatly failed and left behind a confused and placid, but not horrible legacy.

G5 is specifically about that legacy, both in terms of its creation and in terms of story. "Don't be racist" is a perfectly neutral and obvious message, but that "racism" is partially a relic of twilight's failings. The overall "loss of magic" in the show is a relic of hasbro's failings. Hasbro and twilight both fucked around until all investment was drained from the world. In terms of metanarrative, the return of magic through the appreciation of different races of ponies IS the return of audience investment and cultural relevance through the love of the audience of these new characters. That's what they were selling. That was their solution to the problem. It was the correct answer, but just a bit hollow.

I've seen two episode of the 2d gen 5 cartoon. In them, the main characters enter an old place (a cloud factory dimension/ a ruin of some kind) and find a symbol of the past (a magic relic twilight made to rule the weather/ a literal throne) and then fix an issue while the place collapses around them.

G5 knew exactly what it was. It was sunny starscout. It was a small bean desperately trying to reconnect with a power they didn't create, but also an alicorn trying to separate itself from that legacy's mistakes.

That's just a contradictory premise.
