People made fanfictions for Season 1 Luna then it all got thrown out when she was reintroduced as a actual good character in season 2. Season 1 Luna would have been a disaster, to just have a Fluttershy clone as a princess. Though some thought she might be a snarky brat, that might have been the best way to do it if you wanted to go with the old design. I don't like season 1 Luna at all. Lauren Faust did not seem to like the change at all, along with many things in season 2.
But I still don't understand who did it. Would the toy depart really do this? I think toys of the old design would be fine. I think M.A. Larson himself might have just decided Luna needed to be a different character. It might just be on him.
Princess Luna as she was introduced in the Nightmare Night episode is a character archetype that wasn't in the show yet and made sense that she would act and sound and even look the way she does for her lore.
