The colour IS one if not the most defining factor of a pony. That and the mane/tail style. Some colours work well together, others not so much. Saturated colours stick out too much, grey tones or desaturated colours make a pony look boring, same with standard horse colours without clothing or accessories to contrast it.

Somehow, a huge chunk of the fandom gets something this simple very wrong, looking at bright red+black, saturated RGB 255 colours or some really bad gradients just to name a few.

Anyway personally I went with a cuddle build, you don't even have to be talkative, just make a cute mare and sit on cushions with others. It sounds autistic but I find it comforting to just be a pony cuddled up close to other ponies, while more ponies are running around and doing whatever and generally bringing life to a big pony city.

The nice thing is that you can practice using popens as wildlife for studies like you'd do with rl nature but popens have way clearer and simpler shapes so it's breddy gud for practice work.
This could also be "your thing" in SL by the way. Many (me included) would love to see a pony around just drawing. You could for example put a little artist canvas thingie in front of your popen and everyone would know you're busy drawing. Talking isn't even required and ponies would just know you're at work/practicing

SL is literally a limitless sandbox with 20+ years of user made content to work from. There are high fantasy sims, there is a recreation of Ponyville, there is a FO:E sim, there are building materials to make literally anything you can think of.

To play double's advocate, first of all there's a lot more you can do in SL than in IRC or Discord. The prop isn't necessary. You could just as well just park your pony somewhere. I just thought it would be neat to have a canvas in front of your pony while you are busy in real life drawing what you see on screen. The actual subject of your drawing wouldn't be the prop (artist canvas) of course but rather the ponies that zoom around or maybe even pose for you.
For example some ponies might sit somewhere and you can draw them and when you want to practice quick sketches you can TRY to sketch out moving ponies since in real life you can't tell nature to just stop until you're finished too. Moving subjects are challenging but good practice especially when you want to focus on getting faster with your sketching.
