Why did those bitches leave Pinkie & Rarity behind?!

Once Twilight, Rainbow and Fluttershy found Applejack and reconciled with her, why didn't they all go to find Pinkie & Rarity before going home? Why the hell did they strand them in the desert and go home on the train without any care? What the hell? Are there any decent non-Out of Character explanation for the behavior of these four here? Are they secretly annoyed by Pinkie Pie/Rarity and want them gone? Are Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy, Applejack, and Twilight just bitches?

This was actually a very easy issue to fix. Show this scene directly after they reconciled with Applejack, then have a quick scene where the other ponies find Pinkie Pie and Rarity, and then they all go home together. Keeps the gag but without the bizzare character issue. Are there any other gags MLP has done that are this detrimental to either the plot or characters? The only thing I can think of is the stupid gag at the end of Pinkie Pride where Pinkie Pie didn't know Cheese Sandwhich's name, which was the only bad thing about that episode.

It's an "iris out" gag. It only really works as the final scene because the audience has likely forgotten about Rarity and Pinkie due to the chase scene and reconciliation. "Hey, don't forget about them like the story did" is the joke.

A similar one is done in Magic Duel, where Pinkie doesn't get her mouth back until the very last possible second, despite the fact Twilight really should have done it right after the Amulet was taken care of. If you put Pinkie getting her mouth back in its natural plot location, it's not a joke, just a scene. Moving it to the end of the episode turns it into a gag. Same as the Last Roundup scene.

TL;DR: For the writers, Joke > Characterization.
