Fan Site Alternative Thread #107
This is the general thread for the alternative fan sites of the My Little Pony fandom. Discussion, development suggestions, and criticisms are all welcome here.

>Why alternate boorus?
The absolute state of Derpibooru has led to the development of various alternatives. Many altbooru staffmembers are present ITT, listening to comments and answering questions.
Note that this is NOT the Derpibooru drama general. Please keep posts about Derpibooru in the mlpg.co thread.

>Why alternate text sites?
Pastebin.com has been deleting pony pastes. FimFiction does not allow stories in the greentext format. FimFetch purges foalcon and other material deemed to be "unacceptable".

>Latest Developments:
*Ongoing comment and image spam on various altboorus
*Security issue on Ponepaste which allowed for anyone to view private paste titles, their authors, and tags (but not text contents) patched
*FimFetch escalates its ongoing purge of content deemed "unacceptable" (mainly foalcon) by hosting a list of accounts from all around the fandom (FimFiction, Dicksword, AO3, Derpibooru, etc.) claimed to be associated with said material leading Floorb to create foalfetch.net--for an overview, see https://ponepaste.org/9926
*TPA/Ponybooru server restoration completed, Hobune instance also updated
*Ponerpics image back-forward buttons broken (again)
*Brief Foalbooru server issues resolved
*Floorb finally bulk-imported missing images onto Twibooru, image processing queue bloated due to such.
*Total Spammer Death solution put in place on Twibooru
*Twibooru duplicate queue is reduced to two pairs of unmergable videos
*Ponerpics duplicate queue has several hundred reports awaiting an update to Derpi metadata handling
*Twibooru importer disrupted by Derpi API change; fix implemented and missed images retrieved (and again)
*Twibooru is bulk-importing images from Manebooru

- Any news on the clickable line numbers on PonePaste?
- When will foalfetch import/update stories? There are a few missing which can be found in the fimarchive. Eg.: https://foalfetch.net/story/432386/chapter/2

Some images which failed to import from derpibooru to twibooru are not possible to upload. It gets stuck during the post request, no error, nothing.
Example: https://derpibooru.org/images/3616039
I managed to upload it by changing the file hash (removed the exif data) and it worked afterwards: https://twibooru.org/3591087

I managed to upload that fine; I think you may have been trying during a period of ~6 hours earlier when the server's disk was full.
Speaking of which, I'm slowly working on migrating to a new server with more disk space. There's a lot of data to copy, it's been going for about a week so far.
>>42471549
I didn't finish the former yet because I've mostly been busy at my day job. The FoalFetch question is interesting - its data source *is* FimFArchive, so I'm not sure why it would be missing data from it. That example is good to work from, though - I'll try to look into it when I have the time. If you have any other examples, please do link them here.
https://github.com/neetpone/foalfetch has the process I use for importing the data in the README - if anyone can see anything wrong with it, please let me know.

This is why I don't use SSDs. When they break, they just suddenly stop responding. At least a HDD gives you a warning when it starts making odd noises.

I generally use HDDs (mainly for cost effectiveness), however I specifically got this drive to mess around with hosting my own personal booru. And while I am probably a ways out from doing that still, I figured I would work on downloading a copy of PonerPics now. I had just fixed the scraper I made earlier today and was running on a RISC-V SBC downloading to this drive when it died. Looks like my pony backup will be delayed again until I get the new drive back in the mail.

Depending on what caused the failure. SSDs that fail on power outage do in fact just spontaneously die by the way always disable built-in encryption so that you don't lose data on power surge. But so do HDDs, so the difference is in wear-and-tear failure - HDD will make noises and start showing you bad sectors long before it fails completely, SSD will go read-only.

Quick pony.tube update
After Mare Fair, I plan to start working on ameliorating the swiftly approaching running out of storage issue
Anyone know where I could lease a bare metal server with like 25 TB of storage? lol
Or other (reasonable) suggestions?
Examples of things I'm unlikely to do:
- host it out of your house (lol lmao)
- colocate server (I don't have the initial investment needed to do this properly)

I could go to a S3 style bucket setup but I think it'll double my monthly costs and I'll still be running on some pretty old hardware
(When pony.tube started it was actually hosted this way using some kludgy shit, but now peertube supports this natively)

How much are we talking here?

I see Racknerd has a 160TB special going on for bare metal servers right now. Though that's probably a bit excessive and a bit more than the current cost of PonyTube at $480 a month. They don't seem to have any in between sizes. They say they offer custom specs via quote so maybe you can ask them. Maybe half the storage for half the price?

You can host it out of my house in the middle of cornfields :^)
The cost of ownership and peace of mind will always outweigh rental. I am willing to give a VPS with 25TB attached to it as part of TPA's support of pony sites, but you'll find bandwidth to be lacking.
>hardware?
I have several older V4 systems and will be retiring 60 6TB hard drives later this year after mare fair. If you want I can setup some hardware and you can colo it, but V4 xeon servers are expensive to colo now days with rising power costs and datacenters getting priced up higher by AI. There is a good reason I am decommissioning them.

>host it out of your house (lol lmao)
Is there something you could do for a website of this scale/kind that will make some variant of this idea less lol lmao? A proxy VPS with some storage for cached popular content, pulling other videos from a noisy Define 7 XL shitbox under a pile of warm Twilight plushies?
I have >100TB raw storage at home and buying that was easier to swallow, given that ongoing costs are just electricity and ISP. Works well enough for me and a few people I selfhost stuff for, but obviously I'm nowhere near whatever traffic PonyTube gets, so excuse me for bringing it up if that's totally unviable because something about PT requires storage to be in the datacenter.

For reference Ponybooru moved from a 40 vcore VPS with 64GB of ram on Xeon 2690v4 to a 4 core vps with 20GB of ram on our new 9950x system and is still 10x faster than before. I'd be more concerned about bandwidth, but it is an option even if you want to just mirror your data over to keep it archived. I was running a mirror for a while, and will probably set it up again before the anniversary so we don't rip your bandwidth on-stream.
>Colocation
Me building hardware for you to colo with me or elsewhere is also on the table. If you had budget or asked politely I'm sure others may be willing to chip in enough to make it a newer ryzen system rather than one of my older V4 xeons.

All in if I donated the HDD's to start with, and donated a chassis. A Ryzen board, CPU, ram, and 2 nvmes for boot would probably run you around 800-1200 depending on choices made. That would be for a 9900x based system. Doesn't have to be top end and redundant like TPA's stuff to work still. It would pull about ~1A @ 208/240v at max load even with the HDD's stacked in front. A loaded Xeon V4 system you'd be looking at around 1.5-2.1A @ 208/240v. It's why you can buy a baller V4 system for $270 on ebay right now.
Bonus points if you add an old quadro gpu that supports simultaneous hardware encoding.

Pretty good. I've been with them for a number of years by this point, though I've only ever used their VPS service. On average, there's maybe a few hours of network downtime a year. When my VPS was lost due to multiple disk failure following a datacenter fire they credited me a month of service. Which, while unfortunate, I can't really complain about their response. It was an unmanaged VPS so it was on me to do the backups (which I did). Their TOS page used to be great. It just had two lines: Don't do anything illegal under US law and if you're on a VPS don't rape the SSD. Since then they've added some more legalize, but nothing really changed and it all still fits on one page which is refreshing compared to many other services where their TOS is just miles and miles of legal. They accept bitcoin and other crypto which is nice. I've never had to interact with customer service so I can't really tell you how that is. But overall I've been very happy with the service.

We'd only miss fullsize images if Desu goes offline though, we'd at least still have all text as well as thumbs. And most content posted to this board nowadays isn't really worth archiving (and if it is it's generally already uploaded to a booru). As long as we have a database dump from about a few years back (we don't) we'd have the most important stuff archived.

Also, I'm probably in the minority with this opinion, but ever since AI started getting pretty good simple doodles have lost a lot of their value for me (unless the image has something else going for it like a funny joke or something). A picture of a pony just standing is so easy to gen in just about any style nowadays, there's not much loss if something like that isn't archived, since it takes just little work to recreate it by yourself.

Problem: I don't have an account, and they've disabled account creation. Does anyone have a burner account they may have created in the past that they'd be willing to give me access to?
Alternatively, would anyone be able to sign on to the game through something like https://github.com/internetarchive/warcprox and then send me the WARC to see if it contains the data I'm looking for? If anyone wants to try the latter option, let me know and I'll try to give you more instructions.

Nah, there is nothing wrong with that. You can easily be an Anon with a name. Just don't connect all your shit under the same name, as one drama and all falls like domino. Plus the issue always comes down to money and internal/external conflicts. Also having a spine or the lack of one depending on the situation.

What this retard should do is give full and complete control of everything to pony town. Clearly all actions taken by the guy was wrong. Even the way he handles the shutdown down is wrong. Just say he is sorry, he is stepping down, here are the keys to the castle, do what you wish. He acknowledged he was being a complete fag already, there is no point burning down the house too.

On the other hand, these * town servers are nothing more than chatrooms. Come to think of it, the difference between * town and second life is only ability to add custom user generated content.

Unfortunately the CC-NC clause on the base pony assets means your only options are
1. Pay the entire server bill out of pocket (no donations or patreon allowed)
2. Completely replace 100% of the assets

You are completely wrong.
CC-NC means you can't sell it, not that you can't pay for someone to make something based on it. Whatever is made from it still needs to be CC-NC.
>no donations
This is also wrong. They are not paying for the content itself, but for a service. If the content is available for free (which it was, since you can just log in without payment) then you are not in violation of CC-NC.

Comparing it to the IT world, if a thing is free and open source, that does not mean you can't provide services using it which does not sell the thing itself. Like consultation or hosting services.
Anonymous No.42499031 >>42499092

>They are not paying for the content itself, but for a service
The language of the license is not that specific. It just says you can't use the assets for "commercial purposes", or in other words you can't use them for anything that makes you money. If you run a Pony Town server and have a patreon to help pay for server costs, you are using the assets (by running the game) to make money (by encouraging people to donate to your patreon) and thus you're in violation of the license.

>Comparing it to the IT world, if a thing is free and open source, that does not mean you can't provide services using it which does not sell the thing itself
The difference there is in the software case, you aren't distributing the copyrighted material (the software), just using it yourself. But PT servers are distributing the copyrighted sprites by sending them to the player's browser.
Anonymous No.42499053 >>42499357
Ponytown made their shit closed source after open sourcing it because they were ass mad that others were collecting donations and they wanted that cash for themselves.
If you made an full open source implementation of pony town I'll host any server for free, as I was hosting their original open source servers for free.
Anonymous No.42499092 >>42499469

Version 4 of this license has pulled out the NonCommercial definition into a separate paragraph, which reads as follows:
----
NonCommercial means not primarily intended for or directed towards commercial advantage or monetary compensation. For purposes of this Public License, the exchange of the Licensed Material for other material subject to Copyright and Similar Rights by digital file-sharing or similar means is NonCommercial provided there is no payment of monetary compensation in connection with the exchange.
----

The donations was not for making profit from the CCNC assets, but to cover the costs of running the server (primary intent) and paying artists to create more content (which by PT does too). There was no compensation required to access the server.

>you aren't distributing the copyrighted material (the software)
Anyone is allowed to distribute linux distributions for example. You can even donate to the distro makers while not giving a single cent to the kernel developers. And (a few years ago) you could pay for to access the ubuntu releases for example. They had a service to ship you the distribution on CD/DVD. You were not paying for the software itself, you were paying for the service.

I don't think it's something that any one autist can do alone. I've been looking at the (minified) source code and the WebSocket protocol format, and I can probably pull all the map data in an editable format, and I could probably even make an extremely basic client and server, but beyond that? Ain't got time for that.
Anonymous No.42499469
>>42499092
If you use CC-NC assets in an advertisement for your store, that's clearly a commercial purpose, even though you aren't selling the assets themselves
If you use CC-NC assets in a freemium game (free to play + microtransactions), that's clearly a commercial purpose, even though there's no payment required to access the game
So PT's argument would be that Ashes Town was effectively being run as a freemium game. If the guy running it literally spent every dollar from his patreon on server hosting and paying artists, then he could maybe argue that the primary intent was not monetary compensation but rather supporting the community or some such thing. But if he ever kept some of the patreon money for himself, then he might be in trouble.
