See I can sympathise with that and sometimes this feels like something I'd like to do too, but I don't think the cost is worth it. When I'm online I don't really like the thought of everyone being able to see what I'm up to. If you want to see where I am on the map, then hop on, if you can't hop on, I sympathise but stalking what everyone is doing on sim is not the way to go IMO.
If at least you had to log in to your SL account and it would filter out anyone who isn't a pre-approved regular (i.e. anyone banned, anyone with less than at least 1-2 hours on sim so complete and total randoms can't see it) I'd feel better about it, but even then I dunno. Especially the fact that you don't have the motivation to hop on unless you get enough FOMO from seeing friends gathering. If you don't feel like hopping on, or don't have the time to do so, then just don't rather than stressing about missing out. But if you do wanna hop on, then why wait for a notable gathering - just hop on and maybe be the one to start a gathering!

Again, I don't know you so maybe this is a comfy way to play, but personally I found FOMO to be very alluring but also very stressful and my general enjoyment of literally everything went up dramatically once I stopped being motivated by FOMO and just forced myself to hop on at my own time and pace.

Plus it helps dramatically with immersion. Maybe it's just my personal autism, but I love the idea of larping as a pony living in a pony city, and if you're offline then you're not actually IN the city and it feels wrong to just be able to have a satellite view at all times and seeing exactly what's going on. If you want to see where everyone is, then you actually gotta get on your hooves and start existing in the city proper, and then you can see where everypony is and what they're doing, and you can even go boop them and say hi while you're there.
But then again I'm the kind of autist who uses the blackout script for when I'm sleeping in Balti, so I can only see what's going on around when I take it off and visibly wake up, that way for example when you look at my pony sleeping you know for a fact I'm not watching you AND I don't have the temptation to just cam around the entire sim while pretending to be asleep and afk.

There's a big difference between looking at it in-game and offline. I can always see a list of ponies who are online and on-sim. To some degree yes you can get some positional information from the world map if you're off-sim, but even that it janky and imprecise.
The map allows anyone in the whole wide world to see exactly where everypony is as if they were logged in. Banned ponies? Pick your favourite boogeypony, they can see where you're hanging out. Random furries? Kakuma, kakuma's mass-reporting buddies? All are welcome to watch. Yes, there may not be much reason for any of them to stalk me personally, but I still don't like this being put on display like that.

It's detailed positional data, with real-time movement. You can see which ponies are sitting together, you can see where any given pony is moving or walking towards. You can see exactly who's together in which private parcel, and how. Three ponies are in one parcel, two are cuddling and one is sitting in the corner of the parcel, how interesting, should the whole wide world on the public internet get to see that?
If you really wanted to stalk, there is absolutely nothing stopping someone from gathering data over some period of time to build a profile of who you cuddle the most with, which ponies avoid each other, which parcels do ponies hang out in, etc.
Point is, positional data can reveal a lot. Obviously when you're on sim, there's the assumption that everypony else on sim can see you on the minimap, maybe even cam to you unless you're on a private parcel that disables that. But there's a difference between 20-30 ponies seeing you, whose names are listed and who you can all see in turn and cam to them too if you wanted to, and an undetermined number of unknown people (including anypony banned from baltimare, or anypony who's never even visited) having a live view.

If you're a stalker and somepony already knows that or doesn't like you, when you log in, they will see that, and when you teleport on sim, they will see that too. If there's really a problem they can leave the sim for example, or at least know that you might be watching. But if you just open the map you can watch who they're next to and where they're walking at any time, or at all times, without any notification or any possibility of disabling it.

Camarea can only see what's directly in front of her, and public relay chat. If you're not in her field of vision then you can assume you're hidden from the stream. If you're not within chat range and you whisper to bypass the chat relay, or if you're in a parcel with the relay turned off, what you say won't be on stream.
Whereas the map always shows everypony across the entire sim no matter what.

That would be a start. It's still inferior to having to log in to see others who are logged in. For example if someone makes an alt, idles in Balti for the minimum amount of hours to access the map, and you get suspicious of them being an alt but they manage the initial janny questioning. Then they proceed to never log in again so even if jannies were on the fence, but wanted to wait before banning, now they're never gonna get banned, but they can watch the map forever. But if they had to actually log in with the alt, if you personally suspect them of being an alt you'd see when they're online and on-sim, and if jannies had suspicions they'd probably eventually figure it out and ban the alt. But even if not at the very least, again, it's reciprocal so you can watch the alt and see when it's online, this is the big thing that bothers me with the map.

But yes at least not making it completely free public access to the entire world wide web would be a massive improvement.

And my point is that it's really not that nice as to outweigh the negatives. It's not the first time something has been possible to do but deemed to be detrimental - for example chat through camarea is very easy and is even almost set up, but it's been decided to be more trouble than it's worth. I strongly believe map view is in the same category, the only difference is that chat from camarea is very visibly exploitable by making her say nigger and then people immediately understand it's bad, while the map is only bad in subtle ways that you don't notice if you don't think about it because there's no notification when somepony's watching.

I simply believe that the only reason to have the map up is to allow parasocial stalking. And I believe that we don't need explicit evidence of harm being caused by it to realise this fact. Any reasonable person who wants to see what ponies are up to can simply log in.
