It's a one-dimensional idea for sure. Indicative of the more childish era of the fandom. A lot of early background pony characteristics were one-note like that. Lyra's only personality trait was liking humans, Octavia likes classical and Vinyl likes dubstep and they have to hate each other, etc.
It seems like the more "into" music people are, the more welcoming they are of various genres, and I know many people who can't name a favorite genre and just "like good music". Pidgeonholing into one genre and decrying all others is indicative of immaturity and an underdeveloped palette, in my estimation.

Agreed, do notice the later fan works on average tend to be more nuanced in it's depictions of background pones than older ones on average were. Like the creatives matured with their work.
Another thing I hate is is when writers go too far with Vinyl's teasing and make her an absolute selfish jerk. The Vinyl Scratch Tapes is like the prime example of Jerkass Vinyl.

Jerkass Vinyl was the default back then. Just think about Epic Wub Time and Sunrise Suprise. Those videos have millions of views, and were THE main foundation for Vinyl and Octavia in a lot of people's minds.
