I'm pretty sure it's mainly just the issue of being a biped and trying to play a quadruped in virtual reality. From what I've seen most vrfags try to strive for more accurate immersion whenever they can (subject to budget and environment constraints like room size), whereas if you wanted to play a pony you'd have to limit yourself entirely to maybe only head tracking at most - I doubt you'd even be able to make hand tracking on the hooves look good.

I remember a few years ago an anon also worked on porting ponies to VRC, I think using SFM models or some derivative thereof, and had massive pains with getting even just a simple walk cycle working because of how humanoid-centric the skeleton and animation constraints were. I heard this may have improved in recent times, though.

I don't have VR myself, so don't quote me on that, but I'm pretty sure that that's not how it works. When you do full body tracking with legs, the entire point is to exactly mimic your leg movements, so you can do shit like dance, do a split, sit cross-legged, re-enact monty python's ministry of silly walks, show off your karate kicks, and anything else that doesn't have a premade animation. There'd be no way to have any sort of algorithm or method to translate these free-form movements into a completely different skeletal structure with a different number of legs - it's just fundamentally not a solvable problem.

For a simple walk cycle, I think all you have to do is just give up the VR tracking and use normal walking controls. Like I said, assuming quadrupedal rigging options have improved recently and it's no longer absolutely hardcoded to a humanoid skeleton, it'd basically be as simple as SL's walk cycles. But the thing is you're giving up a part of the VR appeal to do this. And it's not just about the legs, but the hands too, because so much of VR is about hand tracking and ponies don't have hands. Maybe if you figured out a solution to translate hand tracking to forehooves somehow? Some kind of optional tracking where most of the time it's animated by the walk cycle but you can press a button to override it and have a forehoof follow your hand controller? I have no idea if that's even remotely possible in VRC, and I imagine it would be incredibly difficult to make it look not janky and jerky as fuck when switching.
