Do you think Twilight would still be as popular if she wasn't the main character? Like if she never got any grand adventures and the show revolved around somepony else, can you honestly say "neurotic bookhorse" really stands out among the crowd of "vain fashionhorse", "shy naturehorse", "stubborn farmhorse", "obnoxious partyhorse", and "brash fasthorse"?

i think if she wasn't *the* main character she would still be pretty popular. probably top 3
but if she wasn't *a* main character she would probably be like... cheerilee levels of popular. still has a fanbase, but not enough to sustain a general

Not _as_ popular but still popular. She has a strong niche and character design
Also in regards to her current popularity it's more that she's become a central setpiece in the same way Ponyville or the Everfree is as opposed to the actual character which makes me upset. You can tell the youth have taken to Fluttershy (again) and in the wild I usually see Pinkies and Dashies. And apparently Rarity is very popular too, but she's still Top 3 in my heart, and she has her face on things like 15.ai and since Internet = Nerd she gets a leg up in that regard too.
Semi-notably if you isolate just the Real Twi's (Unicorn Twi's) of Derpibooru there's less of her than Applejack which also makes me upset.

She'd lose some fans due to not having the main character boost, but gain some fans because less people would be tired of her. Her popularity would be about the same.

I think she'd be more popular since people would be less bored of her.

Nope. If you want to see what it would be like, just look at Sci-Twi's popularity compared to Sunset's.
Also the partyhorse is not obnoxious

She WAS my favourite character because was she literally that. A plain, snarky, know-it-all bookhorse dork.

She would still feel relatable to college students, though her awkwardness probably wouldn't be visible often enough for them to feel like Twilight is literally them. The whole show would actually feel quite different if her inquisitive and snarky self were replaced with e.g. Pinkie front and center, to the point that FiM wouldn't hook teens and adults as much.
