Old English sounded pretty close to modern Germanic languages. Then, after Wilhelm the Conqueror invaded England, the language got heavily FROGGED.com due to Norman influence, resulting in modern English being more Frenchy than the continental Germanic languages.

Earth ponies spoke Anglo-Saxon, Pegasi Spoke Greek/Roman (depending on tribe), Unicorns spoke Frankish.

The three combined to speak Middle English around the time the princesses took over; thus, Luna should speak middle english. English then developed over 1000 years to become what it is in the show.
