Woke up with the moonlight shining through my window that I forgot to close before I passed out. Stared at it for a bit and thought about Luna. At the time I was certainly not a fan of the show or community. Just knew them from cringe. That few minutes of staring at the moon compelled me to look into the character and after that I just didn't fight it. I never looked back

In early 2011 I fapped to this exact image before I ever even saw one second of the show. I don’t know what did it for my autistic brain. It was like “cute=sexy” and I guess the colors and curves as well did it for me. I fapped to other completely safe for work stuff like Hello Kitty and other shit. I think there was something wrong with my brain at the time. I discovered fapping way too young and it’s like my autistic brain needed the visual stimulation of a cute colorful cartoon character to get off because I hadn’t yet developed any sexual desires so I was really getting off due to a huge amount of dopamine from the physical and visual stimulation. Eventually I got older had my sexual awakening and started looking at clop like a normal person. I still wonder what kind of lasting psychological damage I may have inflicted on myself.

Also I thought the show was pretty good.

I was doing lawn work for my Dad one summer - mowing, shoveling dirt, hauling big-ass rocks, the works. That summer, I had also, on a whim, started watching My Little Pony. One morning, while laying down some pallets of grass, I thought to myself, "It'd sure be nice to come home to Applejack at the end of the day," shortly followed by "Huh...that was weird." Slowly but surely I thought more about ponies and Equestria until I hit the point of no return. I feel like I didn't have any real direction before pony, and ever since, even when I focus on non-pony, it feels as though I live with meaning.

They really knew what they were doing with these first two episodes.
You start out with a character who mirrors the cynicism toward the magical pony world likely felt by the families of any little girl asking to watch this show in the living rooms.
Whether you know it or not, you start to relate to her, and by proxy you may start to get into the rest of the show as well.
The order they're all introduced in is important too.
First is Pinkie who just loudly gasps and leaves. This just serves to strengthen your bond with Twilight more by invoking similar confused feelings in you and her.
Then is Applejack, who might be the easiest for an outsider to enjoy (at least she was for me). This might be the first part where we see that they're not all dress wearing girly ponies. This one wears a cowboy hat and speaks like a cowgirl. Also a good spot for some easy humor with the family names like Granny Smith, and an attempt to make the audience admit these ponies are cute with Applebloom. It also might be the first point we start to disagree with Twilight with how she initially rejects the offer for food.
Afterwards, it's Rainbow Dash just strengthening the idea that they've got diverse personalities. She comes off as a bit less kind than the others, but still helps get Twilight get cleaned up. Like Applejack, she's got generally less feminine demeanor and interests, which can help endear her to us.
Now it's Rarity's turn, and her role is proving that even the traditionally girly ones don't have to be annoying or simple. She's got aspirations just like Dash, and will gladly have a conversation about Canterlot while helping Twilight get her hair fixed up again while playing dress up.
Then it's Fluttershy hoping for another chance at convincing the audience that the ponies are cute, while also trying to go for some more relatability points. I'm sure a lot of us remember feeling like her unable to say our own name when talking with someone new. Then she opens up when seeing Spike, and that just drives the idea home even more. It really speedruns the arc of a shy girl learning to open up that's so popular in some anime.
Finally it's Pinkie pie again to tie it all together. When Twilight gets to the Library, I think we're supposed to in some subconcious way feel disappointed that we're done meeting the cast until we get surprised with a surprise party. This really pulls together the idea that all of the compassion and friendliness they were all showing was to a complete stranger, and that just helps you feel more likely to root for them.
It's not quite that easy though, which is why Twilight is still unconvinced at this point. It's supposed to keep you latched on to her so you can follow the rest of her arc.
Then next episode they pretty much do it all again, giving every character a chance to shine and show that they're entertaining and likable in their own ways until it all culminates with Twilight admitting it to herself.

I think it was DragonShy for me.
I started out in the fandom by watching Josh Scorcher's early reviews. I would just watch them over and over until I realized that I wasn't watching for the commentary, but the clips of the show in between.

I still haven't found a series with such a good mix of atmosphere, humor, character, and world building.
Fantasy stories tend to put a lot of importance on the world and what makes it special, and the actual events going on. There's a singular goal and the whole story is centered around achieving it.
This show is different. It can have fantastical elements as plot details and set dressing, but the important thing will always be the characters and their interactions. One episode they're climbing a mountain to convince a sleeping dragon to take a nap elsewhere. The next, they're trying to do a fun slumber party with nothing special going on.
Even in Dragonshy, the point wasn't the dragon, but Fluttershy overcoming her fear when the need arises.

It is just a cartoon, and if ever it becomes more to you than that you very clearly have some kind of mental illness. Enjoy it for what it is, and never make it a defining part of your life or personality. And that goes for ANYTHING you enjoy, be it a hobby, television show, or your sexual orientation.

They all knew singing is off, yet, through genuineness of sharing a fun moment, and not just being puppetted by a singing moment since the plot called for it. I was in a sad, apathetic period in my life; I had inquired very deeply in search of the meaning of life and found nothing at all. I suppose I had been at that impasse for long enough that it had just settled into a dull grey nihilist depression. What other way to explain it? I was just into pony as a matter of inertia, I thought about Rainbow as just a matter of inertia, to get my mind off of it. I just liked her - I didn't realize how momentous it was to like something, at the time - it felt like just a ghostly, hollow preference, to be with her. But those moments were the glints of starlight in the moonless night; she illuminated my life in little flashes at first, like fireworks inside a tomb, and that was enough for me to find my way. I realized that I love her - that she wasn't just best pony, or my le waifu, that love was something gravely serious, worthy of actual respect; and if I tried to just put it back on the shelf and forget about it, it would probably, literally, actually kill me. I made the choice, then and there, to embrace this reality about myself, to embrace her - and let my screwed-up fears and anxieties about being normal fall away. As soon as I accepted that, it was as if some great catapault-winch of tension inside me relaxed, and I knew that I made the right choice. Even now, a decade later, when I think about Rainbow in the right way, my eyes well with tears and the hair on my arms stands on end.

The show is pretty good, the board is a fun community, but primarily I'm really just here because it's one of the only places where any number of people might empathize. I've found alt religious/spiritual/occult communities where they understand, but they're very rare and even then it's only a handful of exceptional people. Same goes for /mlp/, frankly, but at least nobody here is prejudiced against me for ponies in the first place.

I don't even know, maybe seeing all the love everyone put into it, VERY early into the fandom (2010), I remember at some point joking back then if I dated someone I'd tell her "My time consists of friends, gaming, ponies and you." or some shit like that.
I miss it, I miss being excited and watching episodes on Youtube if I missed it that day.
I miss people modding ponies into just about anything, pony crossovers.
I think being there at the ground floor, when it was still in S1, despite me not really interacting with the 4chan part of the fandom was what made me know, people loved this and wanted to make each other laugh or just expose as many people as they could to this show they loved.

They can't, the moment you're emotionally open with them they lose all interest. Every women I've ever been with has ditched me once I share true connection with them. Definitely. There have been things even before MLP that changed me in some ways. In terms of cartoons Futurama was really big for me back in 2004 or so. It wasn't the same kind of obsession as FiM but the impact was comparable in strenght.
I'm not attached to the community but I participate in it. In anything I enjoy the community is always my least favorite aspect of it. But at least it usually serves as a driving force for me to make my own content. Maybe that's a positive thing.

But to be honest MLP FIM would be still pretty big (nowhere as big with bronies) because it was quality show that came at the right time and had great art-style that just beg to be turned into memes, so I think the show would still be famous but as a meme of 2010-2011 and it would stay like that.
Also another trvth nvke
The show would continue without fandom after 2013 and would likely still reach 9 seasons and a movie because even at its absolute peak fandom/adults was/were around 20% of audience watching the show and even financially bronies brought around 5-2% of all FIM merchandise sales so without them FIM would still be fine.

If FIM was as good as you make it to be, it would be (the show itself) a long lasting worldwide phenomenon enjoyed by much more people than some autistic loners.
The show was better than it was supposed to based on franchise and it being a cartoon for girls, it came at absolutely best possible time and was found by people who literally needed it.
It shouldn't matter to you how good the show is if you love it and you have to admit/acknowledge that many people enjoyed MLP FIM in large part because of community that created fanart, music, animation, fanfics, headcanons etc.

if we, as a collective, laid down on the copium as to see how faust jumped the shark all the way back to the literal SECOND episode of SEASON 1 when she completely undermined nightmare moon's backstory and twilight's conflict of making friends in just a single fucking anime flashback powerup asspull that was neither earned, properly setup nor build up in the slightlest but instead just given to her by the writers because she happened to notice the strangers she just met being useful to her cause and thus, realizing"huh, having friends can be useful, never before in my whole life did I never stop to make that connection despite being characterized as the autistic nerd".

problem?
Nightmare Moon's struggle with being overshadowed by Celestia?
Boom, gone! She was just being a whiny bitch that needed some rainbow tasting spanking to be set back on the right place.

problem?
Twilight's inflated ego and lack of social skills being the very things keeping her from making friends?
Boom, gone! Friends just... come to her...willingly! She is actually flawless and just needed to learn how friends can be useful.

problem?
Celestia's failure with her sister being the cataclysm to her corruption and the error of the past that had to be corrected somehow if Celestia were to ever hope to get things back to normalcy with her sister?
Boom! Gone! Thanks to floaty magic rocks going YEEE, Luna gets back with Celestia just fine, in fact, it's Luna who feels any kind of guilt or remorse for her past, as if she even had the opportunity to do anything wrong before being sentenced a 1000 years on the moon with no trial.

They don't even attempt to make a connection between the main conflict and the protagonists, Twilight just wants to stop Nightmare Moon because hurr durr she is evil and eternal nights are bad, that's it! Nothing about that motivation relates to making friends or learning about friendship. What about Nightmare Moon's backstory relates to Twilight in any way? There's nothing! It's just generic evil backstory for generic evil villain that generic protagonist must defeat by overcoming their generic problem and save the day.

The show only shines in the isolation of single episodes of contained narratives because it couldn't really go beyond that, it was, in fact, made primarily to sell toys and done so in a restrictive budget reflective of this fact.

Lauren Faust did not revolutionize girl's media, she just struck gold in a time where there wasn't much competition and internet hype culture was up for grabs, all she really had to do was make a cute show with cute ponies in wholesome moments with nothing too annoying to scare the adults away and she would've won!
Had she done nothing beyond the bare minimum of this formula, the results wouldn'tve differed.

If you pay close attention, you would realize just how unremarkable the show is at everything else it tries, including comedy. It's a show made to be enjoyed, not really thought about.

Only retards claimed the show was an absolute master piece, when in reality it was the craze of the fan base that blinded their true perception of quality content. The show in and of itself never received a ridiculously high amount of attention, the fandom did. Do people really think more than half the "fandom" is here for FiM or even mlp as a whole? No, more than half of our shitty following consists of other fandoms, most of which hopped onto the ride in its hayday from 2012-2015/16 or onward.

FiM was only the basis for a community that took both the Internet and the real world by surprise. I won't deny that it is a shitty show and the movies are even worse, but at the end of the day it holds a special place in our hearts. THAT'S what matters to a fandom.

The show WAS a masterpiece in some regards. The character designs are brilliant - just the bodyplan alone is striking gold. They managed to make a pony with a RAINBOW MANE look good instead of like DevianArt slop. They painted a world that adult men actively PINE FOR and WANT for their afterlife. Can hardly think of any conventionally good show that has caused such a reaction.
It's a masterpiece in regards to the sheer virality load infused. If it gets you, it'll get you good. It's why we didn't go the way of fucking Homestuck or whatever.
The plotlines, as simple and riddled with problems as they may be, plays into this. They're cute! They paint a wonderful world! They leave a lot to the imagination! Six ponies is a lot for a main cast, and they're such strong archetypes in such a myriad of colours that you're bound to relate to one of them and feel some weird pang in your heart.

One interesting thing about this show is that it gives priority to characters instead of tropes. Probably the greatest sin of cartoons is that the writers take personalities lightly and break character so that they can deliver a trope or a punchline but in this one you can trust the ponies to do what you'd expect of them, something which ironically comes off as weirdly subversive for a cartoon. Worst example of this is TTG.
Goes to show how a little bit of common sense and honesty go a long way in children's cartoons. That's probably why adults like this show.

I know that because I sat in on the Ex-Con Chair of Nightmare Nights Dallas and he said that he used to go to every single quarterly Hasbro stock meeting to hear how the franchise is doing, and he learned by sitting in on these meetings that money from Bronies only make up 2%-5% of the MLP franchise's profit. That amount is a tiny drop in the bucket because all the other money that the franchise makes comes from little girls or their parents. Bronies are essentially non-existentwhen it comes to the financial success of MLP. There's no way that Hasbrowas making all sorts of production changes because the Bronieswere demanding it.

Yea, the show has never really been that great on delivering on a satisfying arc, and the friendships that were supposed to be the foundation of the show's entire moral more often than not ended up feeling rather forced and contrived rather than a real friendship. However, I disagree with your conclusion that it's "made to be enjoyed, not thought about". Thinking about these things is exactly how we can create more satisfactory stories in fanworks. Hell, you yourself just laid out multiple ideas for things that could take up entire fanfics just on their own. The show may have dropped the ball on these things, but that doesn't mean that we ourselves can't learn from it and make something better on our own. Honestly, I've enjoyed reading fanfics and greentexts based on the show far more than I enjoyed the show itself. There is good potential here, we just have to be willing to step away from the lackluster handling of the show proper, and instead focus on the frame it's built on.

That was the exact face I made when I watched the first two episodes back in 2014. I still can't believe I care about this series even 10 years later.

You could say it's magical

The world, narratives, songsand storiesare all pleasant, but for me, it's truly focused on the Characters and the Art style. The Mane Six form a wonderful group of friends as charming ponies I would be delighted to befriend if I lived in Equestria. After you become invested in these characters, everything else tends to fall into place or doesn't bother you.

The characters and art styleare what define the show, but it’s the additional elements that elevate it, such as the music, the settings, and the overall world. The straightforwardness and easily replicable aspect of the art style is a major advantage as it is highly accessible. Sketching ponies reignited my passion for drawing, which, aside from designing flags, had mostly been inactive since childhood. I am certain that the straightforwardness of the art style directly contributes to the abundance of fan animations and fan art, which only served to expand the fandom.

The fandom is certainly a significant aspect. I have no doubt that I would still adore this show even if I were the sole fan globally, but witnessing other fan creations motivates you to create your own. It also aids in filling the gap created by the lack of any official pony content that's worth watching.

I believe that for many anons, ponies have played a key role in helping them find their interests. Fanfiction inspired many of us to read who normally wouldn’t pick up a book, and fan art encouraged numerous individuals to pursue drawing and various other art forms. Many individuals have become interested in music, animation, and various other types of content creation because of pony.
