AD&D popularized Fighter (tank), Wizard (damage), Rogue (scouting), and Cleric (healing). When Blizzard realized they needed instanced group content to avoid griefing, they wanted rogues in their game to be able to scout ahead to disarm traps and open locked doors that lead to new paths. You can see some of that idea, locked doors at least, in Deadmines. The big door can be blasted down by finding the gunpowder, or by a rogue picking the lock, or bringing a seaforium charge. Unfortunately, the Everquest faggots pushed away from RP aspects closer to vanilla's release. Their excuse was "everyone would bring a rogue to instances to unlock chests and disarm traps and open doors" even though engineering explicitly gave non-rogues the ability to perform those functions with craftable explosives and skeleton keys.
God, I hate Tigole and his butt buddies.
