I like how Zipp and Misty have the most distant relationship, and at the same time they are so closely related. Zipp was the only that doubted Misty, and to me even tho she doesn't treat her as harshly after she helps the group scape from Opalin, I feel like she still keeps her distance from her. My favorite ship for Misty is a tie between Izzy and Zipp. I think the fact that Zipp had suspicions about her shows she was paying attention to and trying to understand her. Also, Misty legitimately needed help to get away from Opaline, and even though it didn’t come out all at once, I think Zipp’s questioning of her helped get her there. (I mean, even though it obviously came out on its own. I have my doubts that Misty would’ve had the courage to do the right thing if she hadn’t already revealed part of her secret earlier.)

It was only natural that Misty replaced Sunny as protagonist, because the Sunny's arc was basically over when she became that pseudo-alicorn thing and re-united the races. There is still 3 soberaign city-states in the g5 equestria, so Sunny didn't and wouldn't become a princess, like Zipp, Pipp or even Misty, as she is the heir to the leadership of Bridelwood and step-sister to Zipp and Pipp. Even if I wished to know a lot more about Sunny's backstory (how her father died why her mother also died or who was her), she couldn't keep the title of main protagonist because she hadn't a lot to give, but an analogous arc to that of Twilight about becoming an alicorn and learning to control such powers. (We are also left hanging with Misty's mother, wich is a shame).

Tltr: So I personally don't mind Misty replacing Sunny, because to me Sunny was boring as an MC.

Sunny had a dream of Skyros, where all her friends were alicorns. Skyros's central symbol is 'the starscout crest' which means she has some kind of tie to the kingdom. Which can open the door to lots of lore.

And after Skyros was confirmed with the tapestry Opaline had it would be a set up for a future where she'll eventually discover it, Had g5 not been canceled it would most likely having a big event and choose between Skyros and Equestria

Misty did nothing wrong and I love her so much that she’s ALMOST TIED as my favorite pony with Cozy Glow, if you can believe that. Now, I still like Cozy Glow a teensy bit more, but I’m just saying, Misty is such a great pony that it’s close. Yeah, there's only one Misty that develops herself and at the end becomes complete version of her that she was destined to be and not other alternative Misty, although I can understand people thinking that Misty's change was not natural because of her mane's color change witch was kind of unnecessary or could be done in a better way.
For example her having green mane that she had to change to red when Opaline stole her and had to manually recolor it so Opaline wouldn't be mad and then when she became free she could still die her mane out of habit/PTSD and than go back to green mane as a symbol of her becoming Misty she was supposed to be from the beginning.

Misty tried to be her dad's little filly but couldn't and instead decided that she wanted to take things slow.
She felt much more comfortable living with friends that she knew and loved. I admit that she and her dad could do better, and for example Misty should be more inclined to spend time with her father and he should open up more and tell her how he feels so Misty could know what to do.
Overall Misty could be and should be more interested and invested in her relationship with her father but ultimately she didn't do anything wrong, just not enough.

But it’s also snowpityful to see her like this, because the first thing I always imagine is giving her a big hug and trying to cheer her up, or just letting her cry on my shoulder if it will help her feel better.
