Opinions on G1 and G2?

G1 brings the 80s cartoon vibe, it was able to hold me better than G5.
What I didn't like when the witches were in it, because they stole 90% of the run time.
It is not a problem in itself, but my biggest problem with it was that this show was called My little Ponies, but I felt that in every episode ponies were side character in their own show.

G2 I guess you think about the MLP tales. I admit that was so more entataining as ponies were so cringe it was ridicolous.
It had some twisted moral at the end of episodes. Not as if G4 didn't have questionable ones.
But that was clearly toxic when Sweetheart regularly protect Teddy when he was clearly turbo nigger and the other tell him stop being so fagget and at the end they had to say sorry to him for telling him not to be tranny. Okay, at the end he spit it out before their leg, "kay, it was a bit mine fault, too, but only a bit."

So they were good as how much they didn't take themselves serious.

If G1 (mlp tales involved) had FIM art style it would be almost as good as FIM (1-3 seasons) or as good as FIM (4-9 seasons)

This is what I got started on as a kid (I'm ancient lol). Midnight Castle. Tirac. The OG villain. It was pretty hard core some times, then soft as a daisy at other times. In the context of 1986-88, this was on par with G4, if you look at the other cartoons done around the time of G4 and compare their complexities.

The Anon that said if G1 was animated like G4, it'd be "about as good," is on the mark. Slightly updated/cleaned audio would also help.

G2 was "Ponies, but teens/preteens" with school as the main social focus. It hit the mark, but Hasbro shitcanned it. It was good in the sense that it had story, progression, conclusion, and entertaining characters.

Both gens FAILED to have individual ponies that really stood out like the Mane 6, or the G5 Team. I can recount Gusty, Surprise, Applejack, and Firefly from G1. G2 did better, and they even named the main girls in the opener, but the episodes were so short, character depth suffered.

I recommend everyone watch Midnight Castle, at the very least, and then pick through G2 (MLP Tales) and find the good episodes that you like. Then watch any of the other G1 "specials" (multi-parters).

While I agree with G1 being as good as G4 except in art style, I don't think that G1 failed to have individual ponies as much as it didn't tried to, since the show is My Little Ponies and not the mane 6 show so G1 cartoon just tells stories about different ponies that girls can expand or give their own personalities (just like Lauren Faust did with her ponies)
I think it steps from general way the cartoons for girls were made in the 80's and 10 min episodes instead of 20 minutes.
fun fact: FIM originally was supposed to have 10 min episodes but suddenly hasbro decided to give it full 20 minutes per episode so that's why some season 1 episodes may feel dull or stretched because they were plots created for 10 min episodes and suddenly they had to fit double this time yet FIM still managed to be good.

Midnight Castle has everything. Anime inspirations so good and dramatic animation. Human in Ponyland. Pointless song meant to sell merch and introduce a deus ex machina. Spike being a useless fucking knob. The Rainbow of Fucking Darkness. An ending that implies so much that is dropped and never mentioned again even once.

G1 is a much more adventure-oriented show, with each story arc introducing new creatures and exploring just a little hint of the world's history and societies. It has a very mythological feeling to it, and it really makes you feel like they're just little ponies in a big, untamed world.
Also there's at least one mare who is canonically attracted to human men.

I liked midnight castle and the movie but the series was a bit meh, the toys had some variety but overall I only liked some of the niche stuff like so soft ponies and sweetheart sisters

tried to play the game but my win 98 emulator was a bit rocky, the toys are great though, I love the style and if they brought it back it would save g6 no matter how bad the companion media for it would inevitably be

Watched G1 few years ago. Mares in series had potential but weren't properly developed in the series. As somewhat of an exception I can name Mish Mash Melee episode (which, sadly isn't even a two-parter) centered on four ponies who ||change personalities with each other||, Crunch the Rockdog two-parter somewhat exploring character of Wind Whistler.
Movie was fine, it established a few ponies with some sort of a character who appeared later in the series, Smooze was cool. Most single episodes are shit, sadly. Also Megan and her siblings look unnecessary in almost every episode. It could be more ponies, not some weird humans in shot. Same goes for elves and other bullshit humanoids in my poni-poni-poni.

The sad story here is wasted potential. You look at story and think how much cooler it could have been. But there isn't even a decent amount of fanfiction about those beautiful mares.


G1.5 (Tales) is fine mostly. I don't like american suburban setting for ponies, but having established and constantly reappearing charactes was a huge step forward. Stories ranged from fine to cool, and from chill to Patch steals an air baloon with Bon Bon, flies to the sea and meets fucking alicorns.

Think of G1 ponies like of FIM secondary characters or background mares where you have to fill out the blanks and treat ponies as a group and not individual characters because if you except clearly defined archetypical characters like the mane 6 you will be disappointed.
Can you elaborate on most episodes being shit (bad plot, stupid characters etc.) because to me regular episodes are fine and I could see them being remade as FIM episodes.

I love G1.5/Tales, the art style, character designs, modern setting, late 80s/early 90s aesthetics and slice of life episodes really appeal to me

I dunno, maybe "shit" was too strong of a word. It's just that episodes like "Little Piece of Magic", "Pony Puppy" and "Sweet Stuff and the Treasure Hunt" were quite meh and didn't inspire cool idea of reinventing them in g4 style.

They were more of a slice of life than adventure stories, but without somewhat defined characters slice of life episodes just ain't interesting to me.

Two-parters on the other hand are fine. Most of them are at the very least okayish adventures. Some are very funny in retrospective (Woe is Me, Through the Door), some are good on their own (Crunch the Rockdog).

Talking about bad characters: Megan is redundant. She could be easily replaced as some pony of authority or initiative. Same goes for Danny and Molly. Mountain Elves, Gnomes and similar creatures are too much of generic fantasy. They degenerate world that could be more unique with it's inhabitants.

Btw, second season was strange. The Quest of the Princess Ponies was very interesting as lore expansion, but everything after felt very rushed. I love ideas of "The Golden Horseshoes" and "Somnambula" but they should've been a four-parters. And "Ice Cream Wars" I wish to forget of.

Love them. Untainted by pop references and modern USA reflections. No the design isn't as cute as g4 but is still pretty dang cute. And I personally feel the specials are even better than g4. They actually look like horses in it. Not hippos.

Midnight Castle was an amazing way to introduce little Ponies. They did a fantastic job animating. Too had Hasbro had to go and be cheap the rest of the run.

Yeah I understand what you mean, it was first try at MLP so they didn't exactly knew what they wanted to go for and were clearly split on many ponies/group/species as a character and individual ponies being distinguishable and being characters on their own (sort of like smurfs) and they also didn't plan out world and lore so much and therefore at times it was a DnD/magical medieval world with ponies instead of pony centric/ponies with DnD/pony world. But overall I find it good and very important mile stone that helped developing FIM so in a sense you could treat G4 as an improvement, expansion or continuation of G1 yet with it's own spin on things that was better but sometimes there were things that worked more in G1.

Reminds me of Transformers where each pony had a gimmick, like how some bots had gimmicks based on their names. I practically watched random episodes after finding out Lord Tirek was based on Lord Tirac. The 80s-cartoon-style songs aren't really my thing, but I don't really see it as anything awful. It's just not something I'd eagerly put on in comparison to something like a G4 episode.

Anon, Gen1 pilot is literally ponies going in dark forest and spooky castle to defeat villain who seeks to establish eternal night. They do it using magical rainbow-shooting artifact that doesn't seem to work at first. At the end some evil guys turns out to be enchanted and corrupted good guys.

However, G4S1E01-02 are much better in everything. It just that Lauren sometimes reused plots from previous gens to remade them with better characters and better universe.

iirc, there was even g1 episode about Spike trying to find what it is to be a dragon, joining some other dragons who pillaged villages and cities. Spike later rejoins with his pony-friends and bad dragons are punished in some way. Does that plot sound familiar? But its execution in g1 was kinda poor, so why not remade it with better quality?

Actually I would've liked even more reimagined g1 episodes.
