Older sister & younger brother, i think. Spike is definitely meant to fill the role of "younger brother" for the kids watching the show, as an extra thing to relate to, though her hatching him from the egg and kind of raising him does make it a little odd. It's not unheard of for older siblings to end up raising their younger ones, and i think that's the dynamic they're intended to have. Him turning into a dog in EQG does make me question this though, since it's kind of messed up if he is meant to be her brother. Maybe he's chill with being a dog.
