I liked it a lot when I was first getting into prog as a teen but nowadays I find it hard to go back to. Not a bad album by any stretch but Crimson's one of those bands that just gets better with every lineup. The interplay between Adrian and Robert and all the weird metrical stuff going on scratches my autist brain in a way the debut doesn't.
That said, the production isn't overly great but it kinda has its charm after a few listens. I like what ReconstruKction was going for with the acoustic kit, I just wish Pat didn't change his parts so much; I feel like he overplays quite a bit, especially on stuff like FraKctured
SABB or Thrak would still be my top Crimson albums though

what does /kita/ think? after a few relistens i think this might be the least interesting magma studio album for me along with zess. the rerecorded material is nice but the long tracks like hhai and zombies were imo perfected eons ago in live75 and udu wudu respectively. the third movement is prolly the only reason to check it out. it's their classic, foreboding build-up.

I mean, they're first two albums are their closest albums to regular late 60s/early 70s progressive rock/jazz rock so that's probably why.

My genre of choice is metal, but I also like progressive rock and hardcore, this shit is none of the three. This song sucked right away and it sucked a marathon of dick once the chorus hit. I gave it a full listen after initially quitting, and it did not redeem itself. It's mildly more complicated pop rock with ornate instrumentation and a metalcore breakdown as an obligatory "heavy" moment.
It is horrific that genre salad and odd grooves or time signatures alone are what pass for progressive in modern rock music. How You Remind Me is at least honest that it's pop rock.

To be hones they used to play pure metalcore at first, adding prog stuff bit by bit, but this track has basically no metalcore outside of that "breakdown". Plus they lost rhythm guitarist recently due to #MeTwo rape allegations, and it's basically their first song without him. I don't like it, not only it sounds way too "pop", it's neither good prog nor good metalcore.
They peaked with Colors like two decades ago anyway. The Great Misdirect after it was good, but it already was feeling like the same thing again. Everything after it is them trying to repeat the craziness of Colors, and imo they fail miserably every time.
This is the best prog metalcore ever recorded, as far as such shitty thing as """prog metalcore""" goes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcAJSTJcP3o

Not much of it, but I like Psychotic Waltz, Disillusion, Confessor, Spiral Architect, Twisted into Form [band], some Fates Warning, late Death and Control Denied despite its flaws, and Liquid Tension Experiment if I just want instrumental wank. I have a certain tolerance for Dream Theater, but that usually doesn't go beyond certain songs or a new album that just came out.
Extreme metal genres are not only heavier, but often more progressive than the shallow ornateness of a lot of bands calling themselves prog (not that metal hasn't suffered its own stagnation and popification). The structure and progression of the song is more important to being progressive than the sum difficulty of what the musicians are playing.

I wasn't saying they weren't conventional or accessible. I was saying that Magma's first two albums are the most similar to what other prog musicians were doing around that time. Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh, Kohntarkosz, Theus Hamtaahk, etc, went off the deep end to the point hardly anything in rock sounded like them.
Magma's first two albums weren't too different than what you could hear on a Frank Zappa album or a Soft Machine album.

Attahk was Magma's foray into a more accessible, pop direction by the way of disco/funk/soul but you're full of shit if you think anything else sounded like Last Seven Minutes or Lirik Necronomicus Kant.
Attahk was still prog.
