>>126678919You need to learn an instrument if you wanna produce good songs. Without some kind of theory knowledge producing goes no where. The most fun way imo to learn about music is through learning to play. Interacting with music outside of the DAW is what will help you make better music in the DAW. You can just play it by ear and download a bunch of plugins but you'll still be in the same limbo cause you have no idea how to progress or build a song. Learning is more fun than you think but you need to earnestly try first, which means failing a lot and feeling very retarded until it clicks.

>>126678919I don't think it's a bad idea to use preset melodies if you're literally just starting to learn. Lot's of daws come with premade midi sequences, look it up. If you've been making music for a while, just stick with it. I have basic music theory and your ability to make good melodies will grow. Stick with it bro.
>>126680995i fw this, a lil less reverb on the vocal i think.
a general rule of thumb that's helped me a lot with keeping my reverb in check is to set your reverb to where you think it should be, and then go a little bit less.
bass is also pretty intense, im on headphones that lack bass and it's still thumping pretty crazy. I;d be worried that in a bassier setting that this would make the track inaudible.
overall tho solid shit, the beat is gas, I'm a sucker for choir beats. flows are good too, keep it up man
Hey guys I have bought $10k in gear since 2020 and have not recorded a single song since my hard drive failed in 2022. I play with my toys every day but at the end of every session I delete the project file. Iโve done this hundreds of times now. I used to know how to write a simple song and see it through, now I get caught up playing a melody and an hour just melts away as I plink away on the keys. DONโT BUY GEAR! Itโs a trap! I also havenโt posted on /mu/ since before the pandemic why do I have to wait so long to post now?

https://voca.ro/1j7KJIgC35L0
This is my creation, is it any good?
>>126677342it's pretty quiet for starters. I think once it picks up the mix is pretty solid for the most part. I think the wide shakers are perhaps a little too loud. your vocal needs more presence as well to bring it forward. as I said to the other guy i'm on headphones that lack in bass but I can kind of tell that your main acid bass line is probably pretty muddy. cut out the bass in the synth and replace it with a sine wave sub bass and itll clean it up and add more weight.
also want to say i love that snare, its so crunchy in a great way
>>126681395it's certainly not bad, maybe a little stale. the mix is fairly lifeless desu, bring some intensity into it man. beef up the transients I would say. if your compressing, compress less.
brighten it up too, the cymbals sound dead. overall crank this bitch up.
compositionally i think your main idea is nice, and i like the arrangement and contrast that comes and goes. i think your drums are kind of stale. easy thinks like velocity changes can help but i think you just need more going on. try ghost kicks and snares, some tom fills, anything to get more interest going.
you're on the right track for sure, keep at it!

>>126675308 (OP)Is it possible to use a powermixer as a studio mixing board to make recordings?
>>126684138The manual is here:
https://ca.yamaha.com/files/download/other_assets/3/324073/EM300E.pdf
According to that, there's a line out that you could feed to any kind of recording device, and you could use one of the Aux inputs to play back the recording (be careful of creating feedback loops if using the playback to monitor while recording is enabled, like you'd do when overdubbing), so in short yeah you could use it as a live recording mixer maybe, even if you don't plan to use the power amplifier to drive speakers.
It is old though, so if you buy as unrestored you might have some work to do to get it back into full working order, and even then this is designed as a sound reinforcement mixer, usually used for driving stage monitors (foldback in live sound parlance) so the emphasis when designing this will be ruggedness rather than sound quality, depends on what you want out of your recordings I guess.

As for the bass synth, I don't know if there's much I can do with it, since the drums, bass and some other synths are all mixed down into one track. My method of songwriting lately has been to just overdub onto modular synth jams, but I'm starting to think this might be retarded

I bought a 4 track cassette recorder at goodwill and I'm a lot happier with it than I thought I would be. There's no options for noise reduction or any of that, everything is real simple.
The manual says to use type II tapes but I've noticed that type I sounds much better to my ears. Type II has no bass and the treble is too harsh. Luckily type one is cheaper so I bought more blanks of those but I just wanted to vent somewhere. The recorder itself is fuctioning perfectly aside from that
>>126686526> type II tapes but I've noticed that type I sounds much better to my ears100% agree (I only use emulations)
>>126686582Here's a test I did. It's very sloppy but this is the first I've ever been able to overdub something without latency. Now I can actually try to get better at recording. It's so easy to get the levels perfect on tape. I didn't have to do anything to it digitally other than noise reduction. I plugged the recorder straight into an audio interface and it just works.
Kinda temped to get a reel to reel now even though I'm not worthy.

i totally get it though and feel like nobody really talks about being a good performer for recordings being a distinct thing lol
>>126687506I've never had a metronome which I know is a big mistake. I've tried to measure the latency on my gen1 scarlett interface, and when I'm overdubbing its between 80-160 milliseconds and not consistent. The latency is different every time I hit record. Tried using asio or whatever, nothing works. I can't get the interface/drivers work at all on other computers.
I also just realized I haven't played music with another person in over a decade.
I could've bought a looper pedal but I like this 4 track a lot better.

My advice, instead of telling you if it sounds "bad", is to recommend you try to colab with a visual artist that doesnt already make their own music. You guys could do hippy rave type parties and make some money. Or, at the very least, make some interesting YT content.

hi anons, I have always wanted to produce music, never did because I was a broke student and busy with uni.
now that I am older and between jobs I thought about buying a midi keyboard and having some fun with it and a DAW. some questions:
is the midi keyboard a good buy? I feel like I will benefit a lot from a physical thing with me, but I dont know the first thing about music, barely had some piano classes when I was a kid and I didnt stick with them.
also, if I like it and become decent at it, how hard is to make gas money with leasing beats online? I do understand that trying that is different than exploring my creativity
thanks
>>1266959551. midi keyboards are fun but not necessary. I am a piano player for 10+ years but only really use it to vaguely test melodies and as a easy way to tests sounds while sound designing. the ability to twist a knob with a mouse while spamming a key on the keyboard is really nice actually. if you do i wouldn't recommend the little akai thing everybody buys, get something larger like an atruria keylab49 or something similar.
2. essentially impossible. people do it sure, but the competition is absurd. beats are the easiest type of music to produce (no diss, i love hip-hop, its just objectively easy), so getting "decent at it" takes like 2 months of practice.
the lower the bar to entry, the more competition.
i would get into assuming this will be a money pit, and if you do end up making some sales then awesome
not to discourage you, music making is very enjoyable, but never really expect to get any sort of external validation out of it, that being socially or monetarily.
>>126692581The vocal sample sounds obnoxious after awhile but I do like the song.

Basically force yourself to have at least one finished song by any means necessary. Even if it's all stolen from those other songs.

>>126703681One thing when youโre creating sounds is to put an eq8 beside it so you can see whatโs happening. The best sounds usually follow a - is it pink noise profile - where every octave of one note reduces in volume by about 3 dBs or a bit more. So if you hit a mid C note, the look of the frequencies above the fundamental will be a downward slope towards the high frequencies. Itโs not always the case, depends on what tone it is but thatโs what I found yields the most usable tones.

https://voca.ro/19RC8S2uMaxX
I've "played" guitar for a few years, but never really learned to perform any songs, instead using it to learn music theory. I started playing again after over a year off and tried to actually learn and record a song.
There are so many things to consider when performing a piece on a real instrument...I know this is a mess, but I'm still pretty proud about it. This was more fun than the boring studying, so I'll likely learn some more easy songs and maybe even get gud one day.
>>126716503>guitar coverYou did a whole damn rock band cover, bro. Rippin'
Very nice work. Learning music theory with the fretboard being your main view of note relationships is pretty wild; keyboard seems so much easier to understand, but they each have their shortcomings and benefits.
>>126716357Crazy to imagine a world where robots become more powerful. Our own machines raising up arms against us! Thanks for posting
>>126716602Thanks a ton, man.
The guitar's chromatic tuning makes so much sense to me, and I find it silly how arbitrarily "C" a keyboard is. That being said, I gravitate back towards piano compositions because of the range. Translating a full arrangement of something to the fretboard is messy-to-impossible. Like you implied, you just have to treat them differently.

>>126720644the good news is that the AI slop is going to make significantly less money over time.
streams don't make artists nearly anything, essentially all money artists make is off of sales, merch, or concerts.
nobody who listens to AI slop is going to purchase the music, only real music fans do that.
why the fuck would someone rep AI band shirts? that isn't logical.
AI slop concerts are obviously next to impossible.
the braindead masses can just consume the slop they want to all they want thru bullshit spotify algorithm playlists or youtube recommendations but the funds and buzz generated by 1,000,000 streams on slop is probably less than 10,000 streams by an artist who can attract genuine fans.
this issue has been a thing for awhile, AI just lowers the bar to entry. people have been producing slop for months now and with the right luck can generate millions of streams without actually gaining any true fans.
remember when lofi was a huge thing? people ate that youtube stream up and still do. the thing is, all if it is so similar nobody actually really attaches to any one artist. its basically a step up from white noise.
if you want my one tip to guide yourself in the upcoming age of music, focus more on generating actual fans than simply upping your numbers. i've made more off a few dozen bandcamp sales than i would several hundred thousand streams.

I literally just did that with like 5-10 sets as a total newcomer and quickly got swamped with way too much cool music to handle lol
>>126721334it's such a varied genre it's hard to give recs. I'll stick to recent stuff:
the most mainstream I can recommend is the new Skrillex project, genuinely innovative and bold. he is objectively the bass music GOAT as far as technique, and the decision to make the album a continuous rapid fire mix is unheard of.
Justice - Hyperdrama was surprisingly good as well, I don't think it's a no-skip but as far as mainstream EDM I found it to be a comfy listen
Omeria - Late Night Questions has been my go to this week. Off-kilter house music that's pretty simple but with some cool twists. Off Guard is my favorite. Came out last week i believe
If you want more intense techno stuff,. Alarico - Sonora is a dark techno/hardgroove album that dropped in February. Also pretty simple but very hypnotic with some cool sounds as well.
Berlioz - Open This Wall was a huge breakthrough in Jazz House last year, but I prefer Stavroz, they've been doing it a lot longer and are much better at experimentation. Stavroz - Mindibu is an incredible listen.
Eprom - Syntheism was some really refreshing bass music. Cool rhythms, top-notch sound design and really experimental in some spots.
Fred again.. - USB is a more mainstream pick as well. I have mixed feelings about Fred Again but as far as festival EDM goes this is the most nuanced and intelligent you'll get. Lots of fun with actually good remixes added on, but if you're not into hip-hop and pop you probably won't like it.
Mainstream EDM is still in a weird place, it's mostly driven by what's being played on the big stages at festivals. There is a really big divide between what goes on at the largest festivals and what is going on in the clubs and underground scene. As a general rule of thumb anything put on top 100 playlists or being played by radio DJs is outdated as fuck, and not to mention watered down as well
>>126721503this for sure too. get on soundcloud or youtube and listen to some actually good DJ sets and you'll be given an insane amount of new artists to check out.

When learning for practice, do you learn a piece until it's perfect or just good enough?

>>126726115>do you learn a piece until it's perfect or just good enough?it depends on what your goal in learning a piece is.
i play but my goal when learning a rock song has nothing to do with being a good player/performer (which i'd imagine you would want to be, of course).
the important part *for me* usually involves things like having a melody available to be mentally reference, understanding how the harmonies are placed over the chords, what the vocals are doing in relation to the chords, the chord progressions (all so i can rip it off some other way)- stuff like that.
>>126726127well the recent most obvious thing is it was never a musicians job to do all the legwork in regards to advertisement/publicity etc (social media).
if you go back far enough you can trace the history from now, where musicians commonly have total control (and much more responsibility) back to where composers weren't even performing there own pieces, performers weren't writing their own songs (Elvis), musical acts being expected to perform others' songs with their own spin/soloing (Jazz standards, also a time when covers in rock were more expected (early beatles))... so on so on

Okay, I did another one. I stuck to the source this time, but it's a lot messier. I tried to double track the rhythm section, and it's a lot harder to keep it clean than I though it'd be. A lot of other issues with timing, but I'm doing this to learn composition, so that's how I'm justifying playing poorly. I did also spend only an hour or so from learning to recording.

Why were Oberheim the first to make a decent analog piano patch? every attempt before them was the same muffled fart sounds, why did it take them to leave in all the HF clarity?
>>126735070i'm pretty sure they were actually the first to commission research specifically to target that area of sounds so that they could craft their filters to that end.
As soon as Oberheim got over his disillusionment with his WMD research after the war, his availability was made known (it was well known that his second great passion after spitting in the face of God through science was actually music, which is why he idolized composers with a god complex such as bethoven.)

how would i go about getting a "good" accordion sound for fl studio if i only installed it like 3 days ago and never touched the program before.
every plugin that came in the crack has an accordion but it's way too electronic sounding when i see videos like this;
https://youtu.be/4ScZhYVRuds?si=acfA5Uyh1SSNaLVx
and it's apparently something from a completely different sound software? (kontakt)
should i be looking at something better to start practicing this program first?
>>126735431damn dude you are on like day one huh.
alright so yeah when you download a daw (like FL) it comes with a set of what we call "plugins". the ones that come with your daw are referred to as "default plugins"
but the world of plugins is vast, there are a shit ton of them that do all sorts of things. some are synthesizers that use math and waves to generate sounds. some are effect plugins which can add reverb, echo, panning, all kinds of things. these are often paid for software (unless you pirate), but many are free. they are installed onto your computer and your daw (FL Studio) interacts with them, where you can use the notes to input pitch or put them on sounds to affect them. they come in either .vst or .vst3 file formats. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WlmY08bqM8w heres a vid to get you started.
so now you got that lets talk about accordion. you are right, this probably comes from the plugin Kontakt.
Kontakt is a weird plugin. Most plugins that generate noise are some form of synthesizer, meaning they literally generate sound by using waves and math. Konktakt is different, it acts like a huge sampler. Meaning that each note played inside of a Kontakt library plays a recording of someone playing that note on the real instrument. This is done up and down the piano a thousand times at all different intensities and volumes to get a hyper-realistic result.
what you need is the Kontakt Player VST from Native Instruments
Then you need an accordion Kontakt Library to use inside of Kontakt.
if this sounds like a lot, it is. I usually don't recommend Kontakt to beginners because it's a pain in the ass and difficult to get good results with, not to mention expensive.
as a general rule of thumb, if it sounds good on piano it will sound even better on the real instrument. FL Keys comes default and will be a good start to learning composition.
Good luck friend!
