"8 (eight) guys and a goat" Edition.
Good morning, it's phyrigan Wednesday. Practicing jamming today. What I've been doing is just taking the shape of scale and messing around with notes half step above or below while returning home. One thing I'm trying to figure out is how to change home while playing. Abusing the 404 FX's with my drum machine keeps the solo jams fun.

It's just minor with the flat 2. You can run your comfy minor pent and heavily splash in the half step above the root.
>local music scene is non existent
>don't know what the fuck to do other than practicing endlessly, posting covers on youtube and hoping to get a hit
Is this what being a guitarist in 2025 is like
>>126678270Despite living in a huge city my local rock """scene""" is shitty djentslop, aging boomers playing bad AC/DC covers and mediocre left-wing punk bands. It's all very cliquey too and full of the dumbest drama imaginable.

i just found the key of 2 songs i was listening to by ear and jammed over some of the parts and its really cool how you can just do that. you think all these songs you hear have no more room but as long as you follow the rhythm you can play whatever. thats really cool
how often do you change your strings
>>126680535Ranges from once every two months to once a decade maybe depending on the guitar
>>126679966>thats really coolIt's crazy to me that there are people who completely refuse to ever try to learn songs by ear. Like, you completely lock yourself out of learning 99% of songs because you are dependent on others tabbing the songs out for you
>>126680597its way easier than i thought and once you understand the concept of going home, after the 1st beat you play whatever the fuck you want. now i get what people mean when you can play anything. i thought it was an exaggeration but its not

new line 6 helix deallydoo just got announced
looks pretty slick, they added cloning for like everything, definitely gonna get one
I started playing when I was 13. When I was 15 I got into programming and hacking, and spent most of my life in IT while farting around with 2 years worth of guitar skills. I retired at 37 in 2017 but kept up my side-hustles.
Now AI is rendering those skills useless. People can pretend otherwise, but those arguments are made in ignorance. I can't continue to put effort into those skills.
So it's back to guitar for me. I'm putting all of my energy into the instrument. I've been playing daily and making actual gains, but now it's time to get serious and pay for a learning platform.
Thanks for reading my book. Any suggestions?
>>126681568What's your goal for the instrument?
>>126681598Just to not suck. Personal accomplishment only, I'm not trying to make money with it. Maybe get good enough to join a boomer band and play standards in someones garage every 3rd saturday or w/e.
I'm already not terrible, I've just never had enough technique to, for instance, play the fast parts of any solo.
>>126681629>play the fast parts of any solo.I like Troy Stetina's metal lead guitar book series. It's basically a bunch of lessons with a solo at the end of each chapter, starting easy and getting progressively more difficult. You can probably find it online and there are tons of transcriptions of the solos too if you just want those

This playlist, lessons from your local shop, online tabs of your favorite songs and an optional drum machine are all you need. The drum machine would be for keeping rhythm while practicing but you could always use a vst or youtube. I just prefer analog stuff.

>"You don't cut in front of somebody just to be the hotshot standing next to Jimmy Page," Frusciante spits. "What, he deserves to stand next to him more than I do?">The guilty party, it turns out, is Audioslave guitarist Tom Morello. Or as Frusciante prefers to call him, the dude from Rage Against the Machine. "He's supposed to be Mr. Nice Guy," says Frusciante, 33. "But when you cut in front of another man to be seen in a photograph next to somebody else, that's just greed. That's a businessman move. That's not a move of a rock musician or somebody that cares about music. That's the move of somebody who wants to be seen a certain way. It's a yuppie move."

>>1266821366 hundy?!
Wait for Behringer to come out with one pick it up for a tenner probably.
>>126682214Idk but line 6 makes quality products and I’m glad they made something that can compete with the capturing modelers like kemper and neural. Now you get all the great line 6 features and ease of use with the ability to capture amps and pedals and beyond. Whatever they’re saving has to be so good that they don’t want to give their competitors time to come up with something similar by namm. I’m really excited because the helix wasn’t keeping up with neural or axe fx in terms of sound quality. This new processor should fix that. I think it’s 1799 for the floor and 2199 for the floor xl. I’ll probably get the floor xl. Now I just need to figure out what frfr I’m going to run. Hopefully they have something coming out for that, too.
>>126682291i think you hit the nail on the head, dont want to give competitors an idea. actually pretty excited ive been wanting something like this since being disappointed by fenders offering
the stem separation tech in it is very interesting, it’ll be a lot of fun to tool around with and jam with
funnily enough i was just look at frfrs to go with it too, seems like the best one is the powercab plus, has an IR loader, built in IRs and an led screen
i wonder if its going to have something to do with the variax, they discontinued all of the variax models yet they added a port for a variax module
>>126682331Actually it might be the capturing functions they’re withholding because I saw a mode called “capture” in the video but they didn’t release any information about it. Will be interesting to see the full release at namm. I’m going to buy one either way, because I like line 6 form factors and editing software and I previously owned a helix I really liked. I think one of the more exciting things for me is Bluetooth / WiFi integration. Now you’ll have iPhone / iPad apps to edit your patches and irs etc real time, and can stream backing tracks from your devices wirelessly to practice with. You should be able to record wirelessly to your iPhone or iPad as well which will be great for guys who are traveling. I mean this pretty much does everything I’ve been wanting out of a modeler for the past 15 years.
>>126682365That could be true as well. I wonder if they’ll reintroduce the old Roland synth pickup thing for variax since Yamaha owns Roland now. Would be killer to be able to take a single guitar on stage and play literally any tuning. They could also have pickup / guitar sims. Like imagine being able to take one guitar on stage and have it sound like a 59 Les Paul one song, an emg 81 the next, tele pickup the next. Etc. or it could be their own proprietary pickups that you install that can model it all. But I bet it has something to do with that.
>>126682380i think theres more, the guy at the presentation said theres stuff that hes not allowed to talk about but he talked about the amp cloning stuff and the amp cloning is advertised on the page as well
didnt even think about the bluetooth integration, an IOS editor would be supremely based
and same, they covered every base I could possibly want. its like a hardware DAW for instruments
>>126682417If it’s the Roland synth pickup variax thing, imagine being able to take your favorite playing guitar out in standard tuning with 9 gauge strings and play everything from drop a to open g to capo on any fret in any pickup configuration you could dream of. You could literally tour with a single guitar and a helix. I bet it’d pitch correct your tuning as well. That could be absolutely game changing.
>>126682119what can it do that a quad cortex can't do better at much less space on your pedalboard and without a plastic casing?
>>126682460And I bet it’ll integrate with WiFi as well so you don’t even need a wireless pack to play. I mean, the possibilities are endless. Even if it’s just a new line of variax guitars that are extremely well built it would be a game changer.
>>126682410very exciting if true, dont wanna get my hopes up too much on a new variax but the signs seem to point to it
they mentioned “and beyond “ when talking about the capture tech, just spitballing but if they figured out a way to do captures for guitars and stuck that into a variax I’ll lose my fucking mind lol
>>126682474They will have the stomp / pod go models in this configuration as well. I think they’re going to call it the stadium, studio, bar, and bedroom
>>126682490It would absolutely destroy the boomer vintage market. Imagine being able to clone Stevie ray Vaughans exact tone from his number one Strat, or Jimmy page’s 59 Les Paul. I mean. You could literally play anything that feels good in your hands and replicate the most expensive tones on the planet.
>>126682501that's cool but why would I get any of these things when a QC is cheaper, has the same functions and is not 50% made out plastic?
I know I sound cynical but I'm completely serious, why would I pick this over a QC outside of it being hyped as a new release?
>>126682513like “oh that guitar just has the perfect mojo, will now you can capture it and have its unique signal character in the variax” on top of all the tuning and pickup shenanigans
i stayed away from the original line of variax because it just didnt seem quite there yet, i really hope (and am now convinced ) that’s the special announcement theyre saving for NAA
>>126682501itll be club instead of bar but the rest tracks , tese things get used in churches too yanno
>>126682522the product page states the top is aluminum and the bottom is steel, so it’s not plastic
and the QC is essentially abandonware at this point, this does everything the QC does on top of stem splitting for backing tracks, deep MIDI integration and the hypothetical variax weve been discussing that they hinted at
>>126682573>QC is essentially abandonware at this pointhuh? qrd?
didn't they just recently drop some new updates or was this just for the mini?
>>126682573I didn’t even read about the stem splitting part. That’s insane. You’ll be able to narrow down any guitar track you want to cover, as well as integrate the rest of the instruments if you want to cover it live. You’ll be able to throw actual stems from like say jump for rhythm and keyboards and play the song with a 3 piece. You could put the backup vocal stems in there as well. Pretty insane
>Watches bot shill in amusement
So blatant. Time to make a sandwich while it whirrs.
>>126682596the update for the QC was just to switch the audio codec since the one it used was discontinued
>>126682612its a boon for one man party autists like myself, can do a whole gig just with yourself and the unit
again just to nail it home, the variax has been discontinued for nearly 3 years now. they have to be bringing out an update for it otherwise they wouldnt of added the port.
Actually the pocket pod is really cool.
>>126682665For sure. That’s probably what it is but we’ll have to wait to find out how it’s going to work. Pretty excited. It’s about time we get some actual innovation in the guitar world.

>>126684569Your tech can't find a drill bit?
>>126684621he has dozens but the particular one that had a size fitting for the tuners he did not have nor had he ever seen this particular size so first he had to look up where to even find one online and order it. He was amazed himself.
>>126684569That's really fucking annoying lol. At least you got a good tech on your hands. I brought my LP and Benton to a tech last time to get them set up. LP hasn't been set up properly in years, strings getting stuck in the nut and it wouldn't stay in tune, same with the Benton when I used the trem. Paid 140 euros to get the LP back with even more buzzing and strings getting stuck and the Benton wouldn't hold tune for shit with the trem. Also he didn't even polish all the frets properly, the cunt.
Have fun with that bass. I just hope my Jackson don't crack any more. It's a cheapo Chinese one so it won't be much of a loss but I'd still lose my only V for a while and I fucking love the thing. Will still need to take it to the shop for a nut change but I'll be lazy on that for a while more.
>>126683807Seconded. Dean deleo and Robert deleo are genius level songwriters. The songs sound simple but they’re incredibly complex and difficult to pull off. I still haven’t attempted a cover of trippin on a hole in a paper heart just because of how difficult it is to play.
>>126684708why not take the tuners out and put some that fit? the cracks are only gonna get worse even if they seem to "fit" now since the wood is under constant strain. You could probably still salvage the guitar.
>BentonI have a HB six string bass which I bought before I fully commited to buying an expensive sixxer and I put the warwick tuners on that one after I got the Gotohs on the wick and holy shit did I not know how much of a difference good tuners make, the instrument is fucking amazing now, it was great before but after putting some actual quality tuners on it the thing is on a whole other level. It's now my back-up bass beating several Ibanezes that cost a hell of a lot more.
>>126684180I have one guitar currently and it’s a Mexican charvel but it might as well be made in America because most of it is and the rest is assembled 20 miles across the border. Fender USA employs mostly beaners these days anyway. There’s really no difference aside from the hardware and clear coat. Charvel’s have premium hardware with the exception of the Korean Floyd 1000. So yeah
Should I upgrade to Shure srh440a or sennheiser 280 pro? Was also considering sony mdr7506 but those seem too trebly and I don't want that.
>>126684805I have both. I use the shure for guitar monitoring and the sennheiser for gaming (built into a gaming headset from another manufacturer.) they’re both good. I don’t really notice a difference in quality between the two other than I have a sound blaster ae-7 configured to equalize the sennheiser headset for gaming and I run my shure through a universal audio interface. I use shure in ear monitors as well. They’re both sort of entry mid level so I don’t think there’s going to be a drastic difference.
>>126684784They do fit, the tuners themselves aren't the issue. It's the screw holes. On some they were pretty matched but on others, like the low e, the hole in the headstock is like a millimetre away from the hole on the tuner. Also gotoh screws were a little thicker so that probably added more strain. At this point I'm just gonna cross my fingers and hope for the best and deal with any bullshit when it arrives. Worst case scenario I'll have to glue or get a new neck which would be a pain but that's what I get for being hasty. Should have just filled the holes up and drill out new ones but yeah.
And Bentons are really good instruments. I got the pro tele with the trem (which I regret now cause I really can't be fucking bothered with trems again and the tele body is just to thick and bulky to be comfortable) but the neck is really good, plus it came with locking tuners and stainless steel frets. With a good setup it'd be killer. Do wish I went for a trem-less strat from that series, those this are much more contoured. Also I really fucking wish they did more good looking Vs. Their victory series looks kinda ugly with those protrusions in the v and the shape by the neck heel. If they made a prettier V with better fret access I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

>>126684923Shure are more comfortable for prolonged wear, but the mass drop headset I have with the sennheiser drivers and open back ear pads is nothing like what you’re looking at. I do find the Shure so comfortable that when I’m just browsing the computer / chilling I will route my audio signal through them. Even with fairly glasses on they don’t bother me too much. The sennheiser I get a wicked headache after an hour or two with glasses on. But again it’s not the same design so I have no idea. I do feel like the sennheiser has better bass drivers, but I don’t think that necessarily lends it to be better for guitar or studio stuff. The shures are incredibly flat but have great sound. I did a lot of research when I bought them and at the price point (below 200) I think the shures were the most authentic for mixing.

Floyd rose 1000 is a German spec Floyd rose manufactured in a first world country (Korea) using the same metals and tooling and is by all accounts 99% as good as the original Floyd rose. I’ve played a ton of Floyd rose guitars with originals, specials, etc, and this one is indiscernible from the original.
2.
The frets are rolled, the necks are straight, the pots are quality no load and the hardware is of the quality you would expect out of a USA instrument. The necks are graphite reinforced.
There is not a drastic difference between Mexican and USA charvels and I say that as someone who has owned dozens of USA and foreign made guitars. They are a great value and are solid instruments. At most I would expect to replace the input jack if it goes bad, maybe a selector switch or pot. The tuning machines are as good as any USA fender I’ve touched. The frets are as good as any USA fender. Even Cameron cooper who has played every charvel model on the planet prefers the pro mod Mexican models because they have coil splitting and are offered in a wider array of colors.

At this point comfort is most important to me, so far all the phones I had would get my ears aching the longer I wore them, even the ones that went around them. >>126685150I mean Shure is industry standard for recording, monitoring, and mixing. Their sm-57 microphone is like 60 bucks and has been used on every major recording since the 60s. They’re comfortable. I’ve had mine for over two years now used daily and they show no signs of wear. They’re super high quality. The only thing you may not like is how they sound because they are very flat but they’re designed to be that way for mixing. I would not hesitate to buy them again.
>>126685178Like anything else, they're a tool. They can be really cool when used interestingly. My favorite baritone guitar song is Spanked by Van Halen
>>126685178Not when you’re drop tuned. I used to play a bc rich Flying V baritone I think it was a 27.5 inch scale and I would tune it to drop c. Very nice for doing all that metalcore stuff without having to have 12 gauge strings or play a floppy mess.
>>126680535As little as possible. If you keep your guitars relatively clean and in a stable climate, they can last years. Typically 12-30 months.
>>126685208That's really good to hear. I've been using these focusrite ones for a couple of years now and the pleather on the cushions has started wearing off a lot with the sponge showing. Can't wear them for a long time either and the audio volume is mismatched. Overall the shure sounds like a massive upgrade.
I don't know how they are in terms of flatness though cause I've never had something like that to compare. I'm sure I'll get used to it after a while, and honestly I would prefer them that way when I start mixing and all. Having one pair of headphones I can use for pretty much everything is the goal right now.
>>126680535Every 3-6 months on average if I’m playing 2+ hours every day. I use d’addario nyxl and have my guitars setup professionally. I bend over 2 steps a LOT and use heavy vibrato.

No, you're not going to snap your neck in half if you turn the truss rod too much too quickly. No you're not going to irreparably damage anything if you adjust it more than 1/86th of a turn or whatever nonsense they say.

>>126686022 is just wrong. Certain things like break angles and string tree types and badly cut nuts and whatnot in cheap guitars will break more strings, but the reality is some people break strings and others don't because of differences in picking technique.
Some players have a very light touch on the strings, usually due to "incorrect" picking techniques like string hopping/bouncing. 99% of these players have serious issues once they enter the intermediate stage. It's a common trap because it feels more accurate and less noisy to the self-taught beginner.
Proper picking technique required to build any real kind of speed (not talking about trem picking) requires more of an attack -through- the string. Fast players also tend to use the most rigid picks they can find. Combine the two and you get considerably more string breaks.
