lou reed wanted to move vu into more commercial music, cale wanted to keep being experimental. they clashed even at the best of times. they both had egos, reed was jealous of cale's musical abilities and was constantly trying to upstage the other members (who contributed significantly to the sound of vu, especially cale, who by rights should be considered its co-founder and co-leader). the usual stuff. thank god it happened, so that cale could move on to more interesting projects.
