How is it so good? And why isn't it more popular?

It's not like Virgin Steele didn't have other great albums, but overall the songs on these 2 albums stand out for me among the others, even Invictus.

I don't know exactly why, it's just the vibe to them is amazing.

For me its Noble Savage, but they had a great run from the mid 90s til around the 2 part greek opera albums. I liked Visions of Eden too but that's when DeFeis voice really started to go and the production sounded like shit.

Do you like stuff Rock me or the evil in her eyes?
What do you think about the newer bonus tracks on newer editions (like God of Violence Kill)?

For context, David has the habit of adding a ton of new bonus tracks when re-releasing albums.

No fuKKKin way, I'm actually listening to it myself right fuKKKin now; even thought of making a thread about it. You're cool, Anon. And the answer you're looking for is because most people are stinkin posers.

Yeah, Rock Me has some of DeFeis best vocalwork. I do prefer their more epic sound but I enjoy it when they have a mix of both. As for the bonus tracks, I wouldn't mind them but they sound like they were recorded much later when he was losing his voice. Maybe I'm wrong but he just doesn't sound right here https://youtu.be/0NumEQSui00

Also to add the last song they made I enjoy is necropolis. https://youtu.be/P95eQJA4riU
But his vocals are shot by this point which is why I'm wondering if the bonus tracks are just rerecorded bullshit.

A lot of the bonus tracks were recorded later, idk if all of them were . But not even all at the same time either.
I think Sometimes he would write the bonus tracks after the Album were released.

I didn't ever think I'd see a thread dedicated to Virgin Steele.

Great band, and the Marriage albums are fantastic. Blood and Gasoline is one of the greatest songs of all time.

I haven't ever looked too hard into the bonus tracks too hard, but the ones from the 1997 Noise reissues sound like they were recorded around the same time as the full albums.
Anyway here's one of the bonus tracks from Noble Savage which I think is better than anything on the album proper.

Their run of albums from Marriage to House of Atreus is absolutely legendary. I'm so happy to see there are a bunch of fellow Virgins on this board.
This is probably my favorite song of theirs.

I have noticed that, but I don't know how much of it is intentional and how much isn't. In the bonus track "God Of Violence Kill" the verses sound kinda dissonant, but the chorus doesn't:
https://youtube.com/watch?v=7mQhpktIBMY
He also might be using autotune or some kinda of vocal effect in his more recent songs.

I didnโ€™t like house of Atreus as much as marriage albums, or it didnโ€™t click as much?. Not entirely sure why.

Idk if the production didnโ€™t feel as good or if that was just my preference.
The keyboard sounds felt a little cornier than on the previous 3.

One of the riffs on that song has a similar vibe to stuff off metallicas ride the lightning.

Bonus trivia: IIRC Metallica and queensryche apparently liked children of the storm and called it an inspiration or influence or something to them

Something strange about the house of atreus albums is that its actually a fanfiction/reimagined version of the story. David DeFeis said that he imagined it as a prequel to marriage of heaven and hell.

You might notice lyrical references to them, like in this song that got posted: >>126728820 There are also melodies references to them.
"G Minor Invention (Descent into Death's Twilight Kingdom)" uses the main riff from Emalaith at parts.
"In Triumph or Tragedy" uses a lick thats used in a few parts from "Sword of the Gods"
Separate from that, some songs are actually completely reused from other projects (with minute changes):
The Fire God was originally written by defeis as a song for Piledriver, and sung by someone else.

"The Fires of Ecstacy" was originally a song called "The Exorcist". That song was for an extreme metal band called "Excorcist", on an concept album about witch trials called Nightmare Theatre. This band also had David singing, but it was in a style closer to Death Metal or Black Metal.
In an interview, he said he got the idea for the albums after a theatre director he worked asked him to write stuff for a rock opera. This was after Marriage and Invictus were completed, and the director had already composed a play inspired by them.

Given all that, I have to wonder how much the content on the album was originally intended to be songs about the house of atreus.
And it almost seems like the connection to the marriage albums was a retcon.

Like uh, Great Sword of Flame:

From what I understand, that kinda phrase doesnt appear in the play Oresteia that the albums are mostly based on.

anyways the best songs on guardians of the flame are the Redeemer and
Guardians of the flame (I count birth through fire as the intro of that).

These 2 did get rerecorded later on the book of burning album.
