Copium will lead many to simply call him fat and refuse to care, but if this kids last name was anything but Van Halen he'd be considered one of the best guitarists in the country.
>>126722753I’ve never listened to any VH song intentionally (like yeah I’ve heard VH on TV or the radio or whatever but I’ve never once said “hmmmm today I will listen to 1984” or whatever) but Wolfgang is the real deal, he’s a killer songwriter. He could easily just ride the coattails of his dad but he doesn’t, he’s just a regular dude who can both write and play very well. It’s always cool when kids of super famous people are just normal people with no egos or anything like that.
>>126722753Those faggots wouldn't have been shit without Mike and Dave (and Sammy.) The band dropped into dream theater obscurity when cringegang took over on bass. Ironically it was Mike's simplicity that kept the band listenable.

>all you need is a Telecaster.
>Leo got it right the first time.
I have a Sonic P bass showing up tomorrow, really hoping it’s halfway decent out of the box. It’ll be the first bass I’ve had in over a decade, my last one took a shit and I never ended up replacing it. My friend stole it from the music store where he was taking lessons and somehow didn’t get caught. Just walked in one day when everyone was in the back and ran down a busy road with it in hand like a mongoloid. He was afraid to keep it and had a guilty conscience so it wound up in my hands. Anyways, hopefully that didn’t earn me bad bass karma, I just need something for fleshing out recordings with and should be able to set it up into a serviceable condition. I went with the maple fretboard, I like the maples on the Sonic guitars I’ve played so far. Should probably get a bass amp for it too, 25 watt should be good enough for recording.
>>126723638all basses sound the same you'll be fine
>>126723605I don't like em. I want to.
>>126723638Just get a DI instead of an amp if it's just recording
>>126723717What DI is gud? Pointless seeing what reddit suggests those fags/shills link $1000+ gear for beginners
>>12672363899% of bassists don’t use amplifiers anymore. It’s all direct into the mixing board with in ears or at most a wedge. Especially if you’re recording there is zero reason to use a bass amp. Neural DSP has a parallax x plugin that can get you virtually any bass tone you want and has effects pedals built in. If you’re live and want effects your best bet is a used line 6 hx stomp. If you absolutely have to have amplification because there’s no PA then ampeg, but that’s only for live gigging. And in fact, if you buy an HX stomp you get helix native for 99 dollars so you save yourself from even having to buy the neural stuff for recording. But FOR THE MOST PART bassists play without effects, direct into the mixing board whether it’s in the studio or live. My suggestion for a good DI dac is universal audio volt, or if you’re really on a budget a Scarlett solo will work fine.
>>126723853MXR bass DI preamp or Sans Amp bass DI. I use a compressor before mine.
>>126723853If you want to do it the simple way you could grab a used passive Radial DI for next to nothing and it'll last you a lifetime.
>>126723990That’s retarded. You still need an audio interface, and the MXR pedal is over half the price of a used hx stomp. You might as well just run an HX stomp if you want to change your signal pre mix because it has thousands of options and sounds great. I mean I’m a fan of MXR pedals, but it doesn’t do enough at the price point.
>>126722846I haven't listened to it. Maybe it's not shit. I hope you're right.
It's so bad I've been listening to my Pandora suggestions based on Tycho because I'm sick of all the music I like and I can't find new stuff that isn't shit. I understand why my dad listened to Muzak when he was my age. I get older and the least intolerable shit is remixed library music and instrumentals that sound like an old local access cable weather station.
He literally has an album called "weather," so at least he's self aware.
Anyway, I'm only here because I bought a guitar, but I don't know what to post about it. I mentioned it last thread but it died. No, I didn't pay list price. I'm going crazy and I thought trying to learn dadgad/open d would help, but the thread seems all electric.
DI just sounds like shit to me, I’ll give it a try and invest in a basic setup for that route, but everything else I record is miked and my sound relies on the ambiance afforded by that.
>>126724093I haven’t listened to a ton of mammoth stuff, but Wolfgang is exceptionally talented when it comes to song writing. He writes and records every instrument and the vocals himself. Which is in and of itself insane for the simple fact that there’s no creative input from other bandmates to help him if he gets stuck on an idea. Then the fact that he’s capable of playing drums, doing all the guitars, keyboards, vocals, and backing vocals himself. He’s even done drumeo videos where he seems like an extremely competent drummer, not the world’s best, but he has chops and has great rhythm. He’s also super nice. I feel bad for the kid because he obviously gained so much weight as a child due to the stress of his father being an alcoholic that was on the road all the time and his parents divorce. I think he took Ed’s addictive personality and sunk that into food. But, there’s no doubt he’s an exceptional musician who really loves music.
>>126724164Well, you need to use plugins and your daw in post to get whatever tone you’re after. The point is that you can do all that with plugins and in post. There’s no need to mic an amp because once you record that you can’t edit it afterwards and it won’t sound any better. I don’t even record guitars with amps anymore. Most guitarists even if they record with amps record their dry signal and reamp afterward. Amps are virtually obsolete.
>>126724164If you really want to run it in the room just grab the highest watt used solid state Peavey you can find within your budget and either a SansAmp pre or a Rusty Box depending on which your prefer.
>>126724171>>126722846Just tell me what albums and I'll get them one way or another.
>>126721736 (OP)shout out to Bill Frisell, actually one of the greatest guitarists ever
>>126724193I get a cleaner, louder sound from my bass when I use the XLR from my amp into my mixer vs just plugging my bass directly into my mixer. Why are bass players not using amps?
>>126724593Because they’re all recording via interface and computer. I use a digital 24 track console for recording and final mixing via a DAW and miking amps has been and will be my primary method of recording guitar and bass.

Had a thought enter my mind about buying a Martin backpacker. Would put ball end nylon strings on it. Would have a few piezo pickups mounted to it. I would scallop the fretboard, and sand it until every surface is curved. I would then paint the fret board glossy white, sand it a bit roughly to scuff it, and apply many layers of polyurethane. The body would be stained black, with the wood grain barely visible, with a very translucent pearl white finish. It would have an optical midi pickup. It would also have a b-bender installed.

I just recall there being someone around the age of 40 I think maybe saying something about feeling awkward for liking Screamo and Post-HxC music at his age, then eventually the topic of him writing Screamo songs came up. I feel you on the struggle though, albeit I have the loose nets of a band forming after beating my head against the wall for how long. From personal experience on the matter, best way to find your potential bandmates is either get involved in your local HxC scene or like, go somewhere where awkward dudes hang out. Personally, I found mine through a mutual friend I played shitty tabletop games with.
>>126726219they really should glue them in desu
>>126726233>the loose nets of a band formingAwesome; hope that works out.

I feel like I've done everything I wanted to with the guitar except make money with it. I enjoy practicing but I also seem to hit a wall. Have I hit end game with the instrument?
>>126726266Hopefully that works out, I imagine the tabletop to creative media pipeline is one that does indeed exist considering how much creativity you need to be a DM for D&D or other similar RPGs. At the very least, one of your friend's friends has a friend who has a friend that dabbles in Guitar or Bass or Drums and would be happy to play some artsy fartsy angry music and have some fun being the Angry Son with you. In the worst case, record your demo anyways, throw it out there, see if people like it and want to help you form a full band to play said music.

I really like it's open gain character. However, I do want a distortion to boost it for doom metal tones. I know the typical response will be to put a tube screamer or rat in front. But I want something not ice-picky or with a ton of mids. I want bassy sludgy low end madness. I learned guitar a few years ago as an electronic writer to help with music theory, but I never learned any songs. I took about a year and a half off, and then learned my first songs. These are just covers of short Pokemon tunes. From learning to recording, these recordings each took two hours at most to produce.
They're are messy, but I'm curious to ask anyone experienced here when you finish practicing a piece and move on to another? I'm just doing this for composition practice, so I'm comfortable with a mediocre performance, but how do you guys approach that?

>>126729137Not that guy, but you can get them outfitted with the same controls, pickups, fretboard radius, etc., and the only real meaningful difference is gonna be the body.
Only time I'd claim they sound different is if you're running an actual single coil telecaster bridge pickup with the plate. That can color the sound.
The wood itself isn't gonna change anything. Matter of fact if you google the Paranormal Nashville Strat you can see that you can order a strat with a tele bridge straight from Fender.
Just pick which of the two you like the look of better because you can find either with whichever specs you'd want.

Les Paul sounds interesting too but from what I understand its only advantages is playing live (less resonance) and sustain (but why are you playing electric if that's the issue)
plus it's expensive as fuck and weighty as fuck
>>126729191>>126729196Yeah, I play all three, and as much as I love the sound and neck of the LP I just can't stand its body shape and weight when compared to a Strat or a Tele. That alone would probably put a beginner off learning.
Plus even their cheapest Epiphones tend to be more expensive than a really nice Squier.
You could get an SG I suppose, but I've always thought they looked like shit.
Suffice it to say there's a reason you don't see many younger players sporting Gibson.

>>126729278>>126729295Saying the guitar is too heavy is legitimate criticism, but you should at least feel a little bit embarrassed for saying it out loud. Scrawny fucks in the 60s and 70s had no problem slinging them around all day, so clearly they aren't that heavy. And guess what, beauty is pain. It's a small price to pay.
>>126729345I dare you say that to the face of somebody who carried a 5kg machine gun for 10 years
Some time I just wear my Les Paul around the house for strength training. It also helps realign my vertebrae to better accommodate the instrument.
>>126729354Not you then? Alright, fuck off.
>>126729366I carried something weighty & sturdy enough to bash in your face with, zoomie
In fact yes, I would prefer Les Paul.
You could probably clobber someone with it without hurting the neck. A telecaster could splinter near the joint.

>>126729593Uh sir your card declined, we can offer you a Chibson room tonight would that be okay?
>>126729680I'm sorry but the service here is terrible. You will hear from my blues lawyer.
>Sir I will sell you a Gibson Les Paul with a 20% discount if you sign this contract never to play blues
>Sir I will sell you a Gibson Les Paul with a 40% discount if you sign this contract never to play blues or metal
>Sir, sir, don't go! You don't have to buy! I give you $200 for your soul!
Ironically the weight isn't the worst part about les pauls, the way the body is shaped makes the neck and strings sit really low when you're sitting down, forcing you to stoop over to play it

>>126731605Looks nice. How's it play?
>>126731616I am not very good at guitar as I just strum basic chords and play crappy doom riffs and do free form drone to pass the time.
That being said the guitar arrived from Rondo with an impressive set up.
Neck relief was pretty flat (I don't like having bow anyway), the action was surpsingly low yet barely even buzzed so it's like someone took the time to get it as low as possible, and the intonation was fine.
I handled some EC-1000s at a guitar center and craftsmanship to me is the same can't tell a difference which makes sense because they're both WMI from Korea.
I like the neck profile more than the EC-1000.
It's heavy as shit but I don't gig and just play sitting at home anyway.

>>126735235He was pretty good, was into that 70's classic rock stuff. His favorite guitarist was Ace Frehley from Kiss and it showed in his style.
He was also a cult leader and a toxic gatekeeper who did more harm to this general than any other single individual.
>>126735235I liked the guy from /dbt/ before I found he was a member of /gg/ also
He was kinda headstrong. He had problems with his bike, like it was leaking oil and lacking compression or what not but he was insisting to change the looks of the bike before actually repairing the motor
But somehow he kept that accursed Suzuki on the rode and rode it daily until the damned accident
Sam was six people, not one. He used his powers of samefag schizoism to control the culture and narrative of the general, to it's detriment. It is far, far less toxic now even though there's one or two guys still holding out with the bullshit.
