From what I can tell, very hard. They're like the smartest kid in the class - and the class is already a school full of smart kids. And he's the one staying after school too and doing all kinds of projects or setting up the student orchestras even then.

Really difficult. Becoming a conductor is a 5 year degree in most countries and requires a lot of musical knowledge, far superior to that you'd require of an average orchestral musician.

It might be easier to become a crypto thousandaire and just hire an orchestra a few times.

You'd think with all that training the musicians who play this kind of music could do it without some sperg waving a little wand around.

Assuming you don't want to suck some guy off:
>Get at a PhD in music theory or composition and have at least a few papers published
>Learn piano in addition to your primary instrument. If piano is your primary instrument, learn violin instead

You start by learning to play an orchestral instrument
Then you join a local Light Orchestra (you know the ones ran by the Rotary Club and play at the park)
Then you start getting gigs at studio house bands that do commercials and shit
Then you move on to the closest major municipal orchestra (LA Philharmonic et al)
Then you stick with it for 40 years and then you'll have a shot at conducting

That would sound soulless. Conductors bring the creativity to the performance and decide what articulations happen and when. Also which sections play louder and quieter. A conductor is absolutely neccesary for a unified sound and only a retarded rockist or idm tard would say otherwise

But aren't there moments when the musicians never look at the conductor and are more focused on the sheet music?

Conductors are a liability to achieve perfect orchestral harmony, and musicians performing are also too unreliable. MIDI is the way. But composition also rely too much on repetitive mindless creation: AI will solve that and more.

Make friends with a bunch of musicians and then invite them to play for your birthday party then walk in with a stick and start conducting.

The wand waver is doing more than waving a wand. By the time you see a performance, most of his job has been done (training the musicians on how to play their parts, things like tempo, dynamics, etc). They're basically like a coach.
