If you want to get the gist of the genre, then I'd probably recommend something like "A Blaze in the Northern Sky" by Darkthrone (even though I'm not the biggest fan of that record myself), simply because it illustrates the kind of sound that people have in mind when they talk about black metal, and which is generally associated with the second wave. If you want something earlier from the first wave, that's a bit less its own thing and closer to thrash and speed metal, then can't go wrong with Bathory's self-titled debut. If you want to try something that's perhaps more accessible, then check out "At the Heart of Winter" by Immortal, "Blood Fire Death" by Bathory, or "Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk" by Emperor. All the albums I mentioned are classics, so even if you don't like them, you'll get a better picture of a fraction of the best quality black metal that's out there.
