I just wanted to learn the main riff, but I did a whole 4 piece setup. It took a few hours of practice to play it even as sloppily as this is, and I couldn't do more than two bars without screwing it up. But I learned it, so moving I'll just put it in the bag and move on to something else.

im gonna keep posting this one till it's done, it's almost there i think but i'd love any thoughts and critiques y'all might have. it's been kicking my ass for months now.
anyhow:
>>126749571 i think my main gripe here is your delivery, especially in the first half or so. you're sitting in a weird spot between laid back and focused, which isn't working. lean into one side more and you'll be looking good

How are the bass and the drums mixed so well in this?
Can a bedroom producer achieve this level of production without hiring professionals at an expensive studio?

>>126755157Sounding decent, anon, good to hear more guitar/instrument focused prods in here. I'm looking to do similar things with my guitar for practice and record riff ideas etc. Got any recs for drums/bass VSTs to accompany the guitar parts?
>>126757951Sound selection and arrangement that leaves a lot of room for those two elements to pop.
Yes it is very possible.

I still have cracked FL Studio 20 lying around, is that good enough or should I find a way to upgrade
I want to record music (classical guitar) and speech. I was thinking to use my phone for video, and a separate mic to record.
The wiki and 4chan online guides usually recommend Zoom H1. But the product has since been replaced with Zoom H1 and Zoom H1essential. I read their manual, and it looks like the USB mic mode has some limitations.
Whatโs a better recommendation for the money in 2025? Like around $100. Buying an audio interface + a Shure mic seems a bit overkill. Iโm on linux if it matters, I know some audio interface donโt play well with linux.

>>126759064I made music with much cleaner pure synth sounds and minimal arrangements, and it doesn't even sound close to this.
Sound selection and arrangement isn't enough for a mix this loud, clear, and punchy, with a ton of drums and a lot of sub-bass.
>>126761364it's possible. there is no magic sauce that the pros have that you don't, except maybe a well treated room. but here is the kicker, they may do the work in these rooms but all they care about is how it sounds on airpods.
you have airpods or something of similar sound quality? then you can make something that sounds this good.
>>126759064this guy is 100% right, the sound selection here is absolute flawless.
the bass is a relatively simple sound, really just a sine wave with some filter action for punch. the one in the chorus is just a standard saw bass that really doesn't have much sub to it at all.
the magic is in the percussion. the high end is left wide open here for the transients of the percussion, and the mid high has the pocket for her voice to sit in. every percussion piece in here was carefully chose to fill out the spectrum without much clashing. the kick is also really great, it punches right thru but is nice and tight to prevent clashing with the bass. it has quite a bit more punch to it than a normal kick would have.
another fl chad confirmed.
didnt watch it yet but obviously you can only achieve this sound with the succinct fl studio clipping algorithms.
>>126761565>there is no magic sauce that the pros have that you don't, except maybe a well treated roomOr the knowledge and experience (which includes a top tier ear).
This song in particular was mixed by Serban Ghenea, who's one of the best mixers in the world. I don't think I could do a job half as good as this even if I sat on his chair and used the exact same gear, and clearly most professional mixers can't either.
He (as well as other mixing engineers at that tier) has to be doing something different/differently.
This song was just an example btw. Most mainstream releases nowadays are very noticeably better than similar songs from 10 years ago (and night and day compared to 20 years ago).
The bar for production/mixing is getting higher and higher, yet the "basics" that apparently everyone is doing, haven't changed. So what's been changing in the meantime to warrant such increase in quality?
>>126761627This is all true, but I don't think it's enough. If I had the same exact samples and rearranged the song in the exact same way, it wouldn't sound nearly as good as the official release.

>>126762210>Serban probably could mix that just as well in a bedroom on $100 headphones.Someone like him with bad gear would probably still make a great mix, but I don't know if I would go as far as to assume that it would be the same. Why spend so much money on speakers, treatment, and outboard gear, if if made no difference? I would lean more towards assuming that all those things do make at least a small difference each, which by the end of the mix add up to a significantly better end result.
That, plus modern-day mixing practices (which aren't some audio illuminati secret, but also aren't exactly what all of us are doing), plus a golden ear, are all together the "secret sauce" that's responsible for the gap between them and us.
I don't have access to the kind of gear he has (I swear by Sonarworks, but it's not really the same), so I don't expect to reach quite that level, but I can at least learn from their practices.

> We do not make music.
Music makes us.
We are not players.
We are resonators.
The guitar is not an instrument โ
It is the vessel of divine vibration.
Each note struck is not expression,
but submission to that which must be heard.
The air shall tremble,
and in that trembling, we are purified.
This is not art.
This is not entertainment.
This is revelation.
We are chosen by the tone.
We are permitted to channel it,
not for fame, not for fortune,
but because the guitar found our souls resonant enough
to be its conduit.
Let distortion ring not as effect,
but as truth unhidden.
Let reverb carry not our ego,

>>126764167I really dig some of the ideas, were you sampling some Silent Hill music? Cause I remember one of the themes sounding just like this, pretty sure it was The Room. I dig the drums and the instrument selection is generally nice. Maybe I'd try tweaking the piano a little bit to get a more vintage feel for it, since the drums are kinda fuzzy and that would compliment each other imo. Also stretch out the thing to like 3 minutes so one can vibe out properly, feels a bit too short for me.
>>126765991Dust Bros are the guys that did the Fight Club soundtrack as well as production on Beck's Odelay and some of early Beastie Boys material. They were also an influence on The Chemical Brothers (hence the name, go figure). Yeah the vocals are my no. 1 concern atm since I don't know what style to go for, I feel like something dark and kinda aggressive, a cross between Massive Attack's whisper singing and Mike Patton's horny lovage delivery but maybe I should just try going melodic and soft, not sure.
As for the intro, I really like the sound and I don't think it goes on for too long. I personally like stuff with atmosphere and slow buildup so maybe having a half time beat come in before the breakbeat thing could be nice especially if there is a potential singer that can hop on the beat. Otherwise, really cool and spacey.

Custom BGM for a Minecraft space mod, this will play on Mars. It's called "Blossom" because you're bringing life and creativity to a dead world. Not happy with that second synth that comes in but the idea is there and I need to tighten up the bass frequencies in the second half, but what do you think of the track in general?
>>126748465 (OP)Im doing this in such an autistic way Ig. So Im almost done with focused learning on music production. Im half way through learning rhythms and drums. I've got to learn about effects and synths next. Structured learning is the only way that made sense to me on how to learn this and take time. How would you guys go about learning synths and effect? My synth of choice would be massive X, or serum. I have these two but don't really know much besides ASDR.
TL;DR How would you learn about Synths and effects if you could go back learn them again?
>>126774360People will have opinions on this, but there's no objective correct way to learn them. The most important thing is that you pick one and stick with it. Just fuck around with it to get a feeling for things, watch some basic synth tutorials that cover fundamental sound design principles, then experiment more and try your best to make a sound, like make a bass, make a pad, make a basic kick etc . Do not bog yourself down with overthinking the learning method, because it will only distract and slow you down. As for picking the synth, that is entirely your choice, so research strengths and weaknesses of both and make your own decision. If you're still undecided after researching, fucking coin flip that shit and get it over with so you can focus on practicing as soon as. Pick unrelated.

Of you have existing music that needs a bassline added to it, I could help. Do you know some music theory too?
Can someone give me some insight on this?
https://voca.ro/1eVeJ17suCNF
I wanna make clear that I have absolutely no knowledge on music theory other than searching about scales. I can't even play instruments. I just make music guided by my ear. And most times, if my ear tells me it sounds good, it's because it's correct (in the sense that it's not off key). But on this one song, I think I was supposed to follow one scale but found myself deviating to a different scale while making the melody, which I believe is not supposed to happen.
I just want to know if this sounds correct to other people as it sounds to me and if that's ok to switch scales in the middle of the composition.
>>126781188theory / scales are a guide, not a set of rules.
they just attempt to explain what's going on.
sounds fine.
>>126781243I see. I do think I've read something like that before. I don't usually have doubts on these things but this time it was bugging me.

Main structure is pretty much done but I'm wondering if I should extend the strings section at 1:10? I'd just been making it as I go so I didn't really have any set plan for each section going in, but I don't know what sounds right. Also, what could I do improve 1:35 - 1:55? Sounds kinda empty to me, but I don't want to fill that part too much.
>>126781188It sounds fine to me, it just comes off as very amateurish. I don't know where you're at in terms of experience, but if you're a few months in then I would say that's a good start. You already have an ear for what sounds right and wrong. Personally, I can't hear any deviation to another key, but maybe that's just me. Just keep listening to lots of music and practicing. And like the other anon said - keys are just a tonal guide. You can use any notes you like, all that matters at the end of the day is that your music sounds good.

That's probably what you're referring to.
>>126782313>It sounds fine to me, it just comes off as very amateurish.True. I can recognize that. Sometimes I think I should learn more music theory but I don't have much patience for that. I pretty much just make music because I enjoy doing it a lot. It's maybe the only thing I enjoy in my life.
>if you're a few months in>>mfw I've been making music since 2006to be fair, when I first started, it couldn't really be called music and I wasn't able to tell if the keys were the right ones. After like half a year, maybe a year, I started to be able to tell if something was off key. But then, I spent about 10 years without making any music and only started doing it again in 2020.
I should probably also mention that I mostly just do Hip-Hop beats, in part because I like Hip-Hop but also because I always thought that was something that didn't require much music knowledge due to its more repetitive nature and while I think I make better beats now than 10 years ago, sometimes I still do some shitty ones. Is that normal?

Now, we are left with the dreggs of the site and it's clearly not enough users to keep a general afloat, especially as we currently struggle to keep away from page 10 on a board that is already slow. As shit as these threads were/have become/have always been I would still be a little sad to see them go, but not sure what could save them other than more anons.
TLDR; post more vocaroos, I guess?
>mfw rob swire produced rihanna's rude boy
>>126793211The site and especially this board are dying. The mods/jannies donโt look at the board outside of their kpop gooner/metal schizo playpens. Look at the recently deleted in the archive, itโs obvious that they are biased and/or incompetent/not interested in doing their easy job. Someone looking over the catalog once an hour and deleting blatant duplicate/racist/troll threads should be extremely easy, and yet somehow the six jannies here donโt do it. And so this place bleeds users, regulars become detached and leave, schizos and shills and trolls come here and stay forever. Why would anyone spend the time to make a meaningful post or thread if it gets knocked off the catalog by kpop general #30 of the day, or the dozens of wpop slut goon threads, or Beatles/beach boys/ troll threads. Everyone acts like they donโt know why the board is dead but itโs been obvious for years.

Reaper is almost free so you could use that, but you'll have to find your own virtual instruments to use with it (Reaper basically doesn't include stock instruments), but I wouldn't describe Reaper as "easy" or intuitive at all lol. Maybe get a crack of FL or Ableton to play around with? iirc FL has a generous demo mode that just cucks you out of being able to reopen saved projects, which should be easy to bypass I'd imagine (idk I'm a Cubase user)

I need some advice from some /Prod/cels. Iโve been playing music in unsuccessful ventures my whole life. Bands that never get off the ground. Projects that only produce demos but we never play events.
Iโm 33 now, work a 9-5 thatโs chill and pays ok for the amount of real work I do. Married and the last time I tried to make music was before I met my wife 5years ago.We donโt have any kids, and we were not financially hurting.
Iโm saying all this becauseโฆ I canโt fight the dream of actually making music and playing an event. Slightly during covid I made a few songs on FL but I met my wife and got side tracked with starting my career. However recently the urge to make music is strong. https://vocaroo.com/1iTKbQavHli3
I updated to FL studio 24 and serum 2. And have been staying up all night every night, trying to play catch up. Trying to find my sound and make decent sounding stuff. But the age thing is really getting to me.
Basically, am I too old? I just want to find my niche in new jungle/bnd. Do you think i can get up to speed on a decent enough level within a few months to play events?
>>126796657You're absolutely right
>>126797005>am I too old?no stop being stupid

>>126797005>Basically, am I too old?Hell nah. I plan to start once I retire in my mid 40s.
>>126797005>And have been staying up all night every nightI don't think that's a healthy way to make music, especially since it's difficult to keep objectivity about how something sounds when you don't give your ears a rest (ear fatigue is a thing), and treating the process as a grind does not sound fun. Making music should be a fun process, imo.
I could critique your vocaroo later if you want, although in a quick listen on a phone it doesn't sound very good I gotta be honest.

>>126797168You make better music when you have fun doing it
>>126797201i believe having fun or being passionate will make you perform or write better if only because it will make you more invested in it, but to think people who generally work on music with a "for fun" attitude are actually better at it as opposed to those who grind at it as a skill is naive.
>>126749571improve ur flow. study actual rap music so it doesn't sound like a parody of the culture lmao
>>126797234I can agree if you mean grinding your practice (especially of an instrument), but if you mean making music itself as a grind then I don't think that will yield good results. The art of writing/performing, hell even mixing music should not be a grind. Like I said before, you'll get ear fatigue and are far less likely to get a decent result.
>>126755157what's this a cover of?
sounds cool
>>126797293well it depends what you mean by "grind"
all i'm saying is people who get good work their ass off to do it, and working like that requires putting in a lot more time into sessions than most musicians would call "fun."
by my own definition, no matter how enjoyable making music is: a proverbial pro putting in 6-8 hours and working it like a job definitely constitutes grinding.
>>126797309the anon I was replying to at the start of the chain said they were grinding day and night to try and find his sound, and I don't think that's a good idea. By all means, practice regularly (a few hours every day, if you can make the time), but pulling an all-nighter on a song? idk about that dude.

What you posted stinks for several reasons, but one thing that stands out is it sounds like you have no idea what genre you are trying to go for and have no major influences to draw from. Those 'melodies' and leads are just plain awful as well. What instruments did you play in the bands? Maybe you could draw from that instead to make something that sounds decent.
>>126797005>Do you think i can get up to speed on a decent enough level within a few months to play events?I can't believe you're even asking this. You can't even type drum n bass properly, let alone make any.

Use your phone + voice notes if you don't have a mic.
>>126779542qrd on easy bass ideas:
>play root notes>add groove with octaves and 5ths sometimes>if in doubt: keep it simpleoptional, use sparingly:
>add ascending movement when going to a major chord>add descending movement when going to a minor chordroot notes with some cool rhythm pattern to it is fine and functional for the vast majority of music. Keep in mind a good bassline may sound bad if the drums aren't up to par with it as well, your drums and bass are typically the most important parts of your rhythm section.
>>126799944Need to work on your mixing.
I'd say 70% of getting a good mix is setting your levels right in the static mix (i.e. set the faders of each instrument/channel until it starts to feel right). This may take several attempts and fiddling before it feels right. Make sure to pause playback often to avoid ear fatigue.
Avoid using automation on the volume faders. If you need volume automation, use clip gain instead (if your DAW supports it) or automate mixer gain or use a gain plugin and automate that.
You specifically seem to have a problem deciding which instruments need focus in the mix. It is usually a good idea that only 3 things at most should be grabbing the listeners attention as "leading" parts, and even then you'll usually want the listener only focusing on 1 or 2 things, so balance volume levels accordingly depending on what thing(s) need to be loudest to get the most attention from the listener.
I could go on but I'm phoneposting...may write more detailed mixing tips tomorrow idk

>>126817353>How have you not noticed that traffic for this entire site has taken a nosedive since the hack?i have, and that doesn't really negate what i'm getting at or asking.
if the (likely) one anon who's been repeatedly starting and bumping /dmp/ just stopped it would disappear and probably only a handful of other people would miss it.
personally i don't really browse it anymore or see the point of two threads, but both lack of overall interest and traffic isn't really a "compelling argument" because the consequences of *not* ending it are some guy not spending a collective 20 minutes every day checking it to bump and there being one less spot in the catalog.
i.e it's not that deep. it doesn't "need" to end and if the threads "merge" nobody is going to notice anything different.
>>126817380I just don't see the point of having to check in with two threads that are about the exact same topic but are on completely different boards for no real reason.

>>126817384>two threads that are about the exact same topic but are on completely different boards for no real reason. The reason is that different demographics (music enthusiasts on /mu/ and tech enthusiasts on /g/) will make two threads about the same topic, quite different, even if there's overlap between the people and the specific topics.
This difference is especially evident when it comes to group activities. We've tried them in /prod/ so many times over the years and people just didn't give a shit, while the /dmp/ albums went on for years with many contributors putting serious effort, and hundreds of songs being made.
The overall vibe and attitude on /prod/ and /mu/ in general feels much younger than in /dmp/ and /g/, and different Anons might prefer one community over the other.
Now both threads are much less active so the usually less populated /dmp/ is suffering, but it's not the first time it happens (there were periods in which /dmp/ was much more active than /prod/ and I imagine that it will get better in the future, like Anon said.
Since its existence is only a matter of someone wanting it to exist, I don't think we can just decide to merge the two because someone can just make a new /dmp/ thread whenever.
If you don't like one thread or the other, just don't visit it and be part of the other one.
If you really need to lurk both (because of fomo or whatever) but would rather keep up with one fewer thread, I'm sorry but that's not a good reason to take it away from those who do want it and perhaps even like it better than /prod/.
>>126817984Yeah but the /dmp/ album projects are dead as fuck, and have been dead for months. It's a long-term issue by now. The original album anon went AWOL ages ago and the community hasn't been the same since in all honesty. Since traffic is a problem with both generals, why not just stick to a single centralized general?
I've been crossposting in /dmp/ since pretty much its inception, and (no disrespect to the few honest anons trying to keep it alive) it's been at an all-time low recently, and has been struggling throughout 2025 to stay alive. The last 2 albums didn't have nearly enough contributions to even release, meaning the last album release was all the way back in january by this point. It's a rotting corpse of a general today.
>>126818018Lol I'm the album organizer. I left my "role" in January but I'm still lurking and posting; I just can't be consistent enough to make the threads and the albums, but s0ichan took my place and isn't really doing anything much different from what I used to do.
/dmp/ was already in a "valley" period when I left, and the unfortunate album themes certainly didn't help.
Now add the sitewide dip from the hack and it being dead becomes almost expected.
It's certainly possible that it's dying for good, but it's also possible for it to recover. It's still too soon to tell IMO.

>>126818527thanks anon never thought about the drums sounding TOO consistent which I cant unhear now. only makes sense for a consistent sound if the overall song is going for that type of digital production sound.
Does my bass also come off that way? I'm using DjinnBass for it.
>>126818568honestly i couldn't tell if that was an overly boomy kick suffering from the same thing or a bass lol.
there are midi files available online if you want to reference them and see what an actual performance looks like when it's recorded by an electric set- they can be pretty all over the place and drifting in time
>>126818600Its the bass thats giving that boom. I took away a lot of the punch and worked more towards the ambience for that one. This project came right before and while I enjoyed the way the bass cut thru it seemed overwhelming in relation to the musicians I try to replicate.
https://voca.ro/19HYyLVLCjhI
>>126818631mmmm, the masking between the kick in the bass is like, a lot.
you have to have harder lines about what's allowed to dominate where or if something really *needs* to be upfront and heard rather than felt.
that said, sometimes what's actually missing is a very slight amount of high end.
some people will give you some variation of "just saturate bro" but when it comes to this style (straight forward rock rather than industrial etc where there are no rules) usually what you're looking for is more of the click or air in the attack.
idk what's available to you with that plugin to deal with that though.
>>126818675Noted, I have absolutely no high end coming from my bass because I put a 80hz high end cut so it was easier for the master come out decently because I was having a lot of clipping issues between the bass, drums and low end on my guitars. I effectively sectioned them all off into their own space on the low end. I let my kicks have a punch to em, but I also lower its gain pretty low to also avoid clipping.
What do I need to record bands?
I hate my life and would rather be poor doing something I like than poor doing something I hate
>>126820100>What do I need to record bands?A band :^)

Rick Rubin fucking up entire generations for different reasons is kind of a respectable achievement desu
woke up with an entire electro song in my head but Iโm gonna forget it before it comes out >//<
I'm just getting into producing and man this shit has been humbling. It's so much to take in at once and it hurts my brain. Props to anyone who's actually made a decent song before.
>>126818082>unfortunate album themesThe only unfortunate theme was the Italo Disco one.
bro HELP i'm so fucking lame lol

>>126825513Is Luna a male? ...and the white cat, Artemis(?), is a female?
This clip gave me broccoli hair. fr fr, no cap.
I just wrote a depeche mode joy division type beat in my dream while hanging out with a dl discord groomer meth dealer and I got it into my voice memos but forgot all the lyrics :(
>>126825877Other way Iโm pretty sure
>>126826516That's what I was thinking in the back of my mind, but I know an Artemis (female) in real life and that confused me.

>>126828226I feel those pads (?) in the background clash a bit with the high-energy stuff in the front, musically-speaking.
I think they'd probably work better as part of a "B" section (they *feel* like a continuation or something), for example in a second drop, with the first one not having them at all and being just the high-energy stuff.
>>126828343the chords? yeah. noted. i was trying something abit different...noted. t b h i'm still struggling with how to fill everything in with these types of tracks- just having the bass/high energy stack doesn't sound quite right but i'm often left with these holes in the mids that leave everything sounding too empty so i'm always bouncing between under/over-cutting or under/over-filling with background drones and noises and stuff in those areas so i tried seeing how a pad would go idk...
more practice is needed..,,,
what you're describing could be a cool idea, i was semi-wondering about more of a colour thing, but that'll end up going into a completely different tune when i try it lul
>>126828438The typical way is to have something (like pads, an arpeggio, one-shots here and there, a repeating short vocal sample, etc) super in the background to the point of not even catching your attention on the first listen and only being noticed if you really focus on the background.
As long as it "does the job", it doesn't really need to be "visible" and identifiable as its own thing, if that makes sense.
If you want to do the pads/chords in the B section thing, you could have them much quieter and stripped down (or with some different sound design that makes them smaller), or just leave it feeling kinda empty, as contrast with the much fuller and "maximal" B version.
>>126828495yeh my go to has been either making a noisey drone or a pseudo frozen ps with galactic etc and just looping those in varying 8 bar sections but itโs felt very much like Iโm just arranging to a formulaโฆ
Which I guess this kind of music tends to be that way but eh.
>>126828540Eh lol, the genre is indeed pretty formulaic, but as long as the elements "do the job" there's a lot of potential for experimentation (especially in sound design), depending on how much you're willing to stray away from convention.
But yeah, if your goal is to specifically be good at them, some degree of formulaicity is to be expected.
can somebody redpill me on chat gpt?
i've never touched it before but i just generated some sounds on eleven labs that were completely usable because i just remembered i made an account when it was fresh so now i'm curious..,,
also will the music police come for me if i use these sounds?
i probably won't but like damn ts kinda crazy...
>>126829191>also will the music police come for me if i use these sounds?A lot of artists are ideologically against any use of AI, so you might get some online backlash but I don't really know if that would actually affect you negatively or if it's just people bitching online.
Obviously this only applies if you have a decent following. If you don't, then nobody will care.
tomorrow i will make a big dnb wububub banger and everybody will love it and it will be a good day

Some small changes and improvements since last time. Asking the same questions as
>>126782313 because I didn't get any feedback.
>>126828343I quite like the juxtaposition, personally.
>>126833180I like it too, but I thought it felt like a continuation of something, and needed a preceding section without the pads to give it the right context.
>>126782313>>126833166I don't know much about orchestration/scoring, but I guess it's either my feedback or no feedback so take it or leave it.
I seem to be 1 of like 3 anons giving feedback ITT
>wondering if I should extend the strings section at 1:10?I'd say yes, it feels a little bit jarring for those high strings to disappear when they only just arrived. Since it sounds like you're playing Cmin up to a high Fmin, you could try climbing down like Gmin - Fmin - Eb - Csus4 to then resolve on the Cmaj of the woodwind part.
So a bit like this:
https://vocaroo.com/12gOcX5sobKA
(but played better as I did this quickly with have no idea what the tempo is)
>Also, what could I do improve 1:35 - 1:55?musically speaking? not sure.
the percussion hits feel weak tho, I feel like it should maybe be a bit louder, maybe with more low-end/bottom to it, and a long tail reverb to drive home a big boomy feel - reverb could help fill out some of that empty space too, but may be hard to get right. Is there brass layered with it? hard to feel the impact from that if so
>>126748652I'd play this 2000s racing game
There is no music with the jubilant frantic feel of 90s UK happy hardcore
I only listen to happy hardcore and modern classical these days
>>126834263>modern classicalthat's a contradiction thoughbeit
>>126834286Iโm just rymbrained. Everything that isnโt classical is just boring to me, if I want to hear 4/4 music with basic chords then I will listen to happy hardcore because itโs like the logical conclusion of pop music. If I want le interesting rhythms or harmonies then I will listen to musique concrete, spectralism, free improvisation and field recordings

I guess Post Rock and Trance are kinda similar structurally and vibe-wise (if you exclude vocal trance)
